So now that oldies stations are disappearing like Air America's dollars. What are fans of oldies to do?
Should they get over it and cling to classic rock/hits, buy satelite or HD, or wait patiently for oldies to be revived? I am well within the 18-49 demo and grew up on KFRC and saw it's demise in SF, as well as the demise of a much more inferior Kool in Sac. I miss having an oldies station to put in my number 5 setting in my car.....well.....that right there might be the problem....#5

Can't pay bills with ratings.

National advertisers (and their agencies) won't buy Oldies radio.
In a market like New York, local advertisers have agencies, too. They won't buy Oldies radio.
Sales pays the bills.

Now before somebody says advertisers don't want older listeners, let me say, "that's a lie."
Some do; some don't.
For those that do, there are better ways to reach 50+ demos than radio and better formats than Oldies.
Even those that do don't buy Oldies.

Oldies is dead.
Let it go.
Get XM or Sirius.
Enjoy life again.

XM, XM, XM! Geeze, if you hate radio so much why post. XM ain't all that. It certainly isn't exciting.
If you hate radio that much, why bother? If you work in radio you certainly can't pay the bills working
for XM or Sirius. They have less jobs than anyone to go around. It may be wall to wall music, but after that,
not much else. There is no "there" there... Oh yeah I know, you'll counter with the 100 channels and the
content of the non-music channels, but come on... It's just NOT the be all and end all, and it's certainly
not the answer to everything for everyone. It's voice tracked even more than regular radio,(especially XM)
and some of the music rotates even faster than regular radio too. It's just another thread in a larger tapestry
that makes up "Radio" that's all...

Never said I hated radio ... did I? I simply posted someone else's comment that is relevant to this discussion. I do pay attention, however, to what competiting media are doing in order to build a better radio product. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Sorry to have upset you, calguy.

I posted at the end of a long and tiring day. Guess I was out of sorts. I'm just tired of people talking up XM so much. Land based radio still delivers the goods, and there have been many posters extolling XM while pronouncing terrestrial radio dead or dying. I too pay attention to what else is going on, a smart practice. Forgive my outburst. I know that audiences are eroding, but I don't think they'd leave if programmers got smarter and gave people what they want. Sometimes you get more out of a discussion with listeners than an AMT can give you. I make my living and support my family with what I make from my job in terrestrial radio and know all too well that jobs with XM and Sirius are few and far between. All we need to be is smarter. Land based radio can give the audience more than satellite if we don’t act stupid… Sorry…

I once owned a group of radio stations that I sold 20 years ago. I'm 57 years old. Today, I seldom listen to LOCAL radio. Here it's all bird, too much hype, only a little local, and my music is gone. Why should I bother?

I listen to my i-pod and WGN, Chicago - which I can hear even on a drive to Detroit (E side of the state.). To my taste, WGN is the very best station in the world. That's all. Even the local newspaper is not for me any more.

Local tv is either "all-hype" about how great (we think) we are, or the same 4 stories over and over for days. It ALL wastes my time, when I can look around the internet without the hype, and get what I want.

I'm in Los Angeles. Radio is nowhere near what it used to be and I have many complaints about the way things are now, but working in radio is still better than most jobs that I can think of. The station I work for does deliver the goods for it's audience. Many still do. But there are so many fewer that do deliver that it can be disheartening. You're age makes you even more of a witness to the way radio sounded when it was so good that it defies imagination when compared to what we have today. I too use the internet for entertainment and information, but I find it incomplete as well. I could be bitter about what the government and consolidation has done to my beloved radio, and at times I am, but since I can't change it, it does me no good. I just try to do the best I can to make my little part of the industry the best it can be under the circumstances... TV news is a little off topic, but I certainly agree with you. Even in the largest markets it’s woefully inadequate, repetitive, poorly written and even at the network O&O's is amateurish... That's why I watch it only when I need to.

Dear Jim: I feel your pain and suggest you do what the rest of us have done and abandon terrestrial radio. For whatever reason, terrestrial radio has decided that you are part of a worthless demographic Go to satellite, which still offers oldies or go to the Internet. I have found three worthwhile online streams on this site: www.biggirlpantie.com. Don't bother trying to argue the case here, too many corporate weasels who value ad revenue over content and what's really amusing is they cannot figure out why they are losing listeners (customers). So don't spin your wheels or waste your time with terrestrial radio.

Yup, it's alive and well, and it goes both ways. The pros & cons get to be heard here. No pidgeon holes,
but there are all of these boards for a reason. Lately it just seems like XM is being presented as
the answer for every complaint about terrestrial radio no matter which board you're on.
