Old Products

Tom makes a great point. We don't like language filters any more than you do. They're clunky and they can't catch context. The problem is that they're still necessary as a very small group likes to disrupt the site with offensive language. We'll continue to limit their use to the absolute minimum.

Language filters are like using a nuclear bomb when all you need is a firecracker. The problem is that no one's built a better mousetrap.

They still make Brylcreem, saw tubes of it just the other day.

They still have Falstaff beer in a can at least in Texas where I live. I guess it must be a regional deal.

I believe that Bromo Seltzer is still made, all depends on where you live.

As for the tooth powder, I couldn't fathom making your own toothpaste when it is much cheaper to buy the ready made stuff. But I can understand about the drug reference as it can be misused like other products.

Re: 20 Mule Team/Borax products...

There is a website(that does not seem to get updated) where you can purchase those products and also view an episode of "Death Valley Days", of which Boraxo/20 Mule Team was the sponsor. The site is: http://www.deathvalleydays.com/

Also, 20 Mule Team Borax and Lifebuoy Soap are available through www.vermontcountrystore.com along with a Duncan yo-yo!

i work at our local wal-mart and i stock the laundry soap...we carry borax

Quisp and Quake cereals
Quake looks to have fallen off the map in the 70s in favor of Quisp, which can be ordered online at Quisp.com

Bromo Seltzer
found some online
Coronet bathroom tissue
still available...don't know about wide store availability but several spots online have it

Buck Wheats cereal
BucWheats apparently discontinued by late 1990s

Colgate tooth powder
even though it was widely available from the 1800s, it lost popularity to pastes by World War 1; now, several places online have tooth powder...actually found Colgate in the oblong can at an Indian site ( http://www.ishopindian.com/shop/catalog/Colgate-Tooth-Powder-p-23585.html ) claiming Colgate had just put it back into production

Maypo cereal
after being bounced around by several owners, now Homestat Farm owns it and is made at a place in PA; found several places online selling it in 4 varieties

Apparently Little Caesar's cut way back on store count around here (DFW area) in the early-mid-1990s and cut out delivery; haven't heard whether they'll try to have more locations again later or do delivery, either.

Old Gold cigarettes

As someone had said earlier they are still being made.

Come to think of it I am pretty sure most of the old cigarette brands that advertised on TV are still around in one form or another. Sometimes they may be "temporary defunct". Both Pall Mall and L&M recently made a comeback as lower priced cigarettes. A few years back Viceroy did the same thing.

I saw Chesterfield and Chesterfield 101 on sale at some store just last year while a friend of mine claimed to have seen Raleigh and Belair on sale at a Kroger in Ohio ( minus those coupons though ). Kent and True I seem to remember hearing is about to be re-launched.

Some cigarettes have changed their focus over the years. Capri was a "man's smoke" when they advertised on TV back in the 60s but today Capri is about as a woman's cigarette as they can get.

Of course Marlboro, Salem, Camel, Winston, Parliment, Newport, Virginia Slims, KOOL, Benson & Hedges are still around and many of those brands, their packages haven't changed a bit since the 60s.

The only cigarettes I can think of that were around during the time they were allowed to advertise on TV who may
be defunct now...Vantage, Bull Durham, Taeryton and Phillip Morris Multi-Filter and their non-filter ones ( the kind Lucy & Ricky smoked ). Plus there was Eve Cigarettes with flowers on the filter. They were still available until just a few years ago. On a similar note I haven't seen Robert Burns cigars for awhile. Phillies I believe almost went out of business at one point in the 80s only to be rediscovered in the 90s by the Generation X crowd the same way Black & Mild cigars were. But for the wrong reasons.

However the way these cigarette companies keep re-launching some of these brands...who knows?

Personna razor blades
still being made; in stores and online

Marx,
sold by the family to Quaker in 1972, Quaker sold it to a UK company in 1978, liquidated in 1980; Mattel now has the rights to Rockem-Sockem Robots, a company called KidsWheels owns the Big Wheel brand, while a couple of other firms make the tin trains and plastic train sets

Kenner,
bought by General Mills in 1967, spun off with Parker Bros. in 1985, bought by Tonka in 1987, then Hasbro bought the Kenner-Parker-Tonka combo in 1991; several Kenner items may still exist (including Play-Doh still found in stores) but will have the Hasbro logo on them

and Ideal toys
lasted till 1982, sold to another company and it later closed; some Ideal toys could still be made with rights by other makers but not sure which toys survived

Libby's canned foods
still available, through 3 different companies: Nestle owns the juice biz (bought in 1971), Seneca bought the canned fruit/veggie part from Nestle in the 1980s, and ConAgra acquired the canned meat products line in 1998

Funny Face drink mix
lasted till 1980 and Pillsbury sold it to another company; found a site with listings for the different flavors ( http://theimaginaryworld.com/ffpac.html ) and when they debuted

Ban deodorant
a Japanese company owns it now; available in stores and online

Curtis Mathes TV's
were based in a Dallas suburb and made in a town east of Dallas; filed for bankruptcy in 1982 and the east TX plant closed the same year (later declared a SuperFund site by the EPA)...the chairman died in an Air Canada crash in June 1983...Kmart sold them in the late 1990s-early 2000s as an in-house brand...sold later to another company...now apparently reorganizing and based just north of Dallas, and are due to have products sold soon (when?) in Sam's Club stores

"We don't like language filters any more than you do. They're clunky and they can't catch context"

Right. My personal favorite is the censorship of veteran DJ Charlie Van Dyke on the radio boards. I guess the same was true of discussion of the Dick Van Dyke Show on the TV boards.

This seemed silly given that the...uh...female motorcycle club...uses this word as a badge of honor. I believe this is no longer filtered out, so I assume the webmasters can be asked to go into the filter software and classify some formerly "naughty" words as OK.

I guess we'll see after I post this...

Just thought of a notable one: Carter's Pills.

I know that some years back, the FTC made them stop calling themselves "Carter's Little Liver Pills" because among other things, they had nothing to do with the liver. Truth be told, they were sugar pills, nothing more than placebos.

Anyone know if Carter's Pills are still around?

They re-entered the Houston market a few years ago; their niche is ready-made pizzas at a low price (5 bucks for a large pepperoni. Not bad for the price).

Several come to mind here:

Some of you mentioned Little Caesar's Pizza, but what about Godfather's? Is it still around? I remember Shakey's Pizza in Memphis in the '70s, but I don't think they are around anymore either.

Remember Burger Chef restaurants? With Burger Chef and Jeff?

What about Burger Queen restaurants? With Queenie Bee? I think they either sold or changed their name to Druther's Restaurants. "I'd ruther go to Druther's restaurant."

I know they still make Kool-Aid, but I haven't seen it advertised lately. I still remember the big Kool-Aid pitcher crashing through the wall at the bowling alley! ;D (But then again, I'm not a kid anymore, so I no longer watch children's television.)

And remember Proctor and Gamble products with the moon and stars logo on the side? ;D

I can't help but notice that Orville Redenbacher's popcorn has brought back old footage of him in their advertising lately! It's been years since he died!

And I liked the old Colt 45 beer commercials even though I was just a kid when those were on.

I remember Shakey's Pizza in Memphis in the '70s, but I don't think they are around anymore either.

They're still around, mostly in Southern California.

There are dozens of Little Caesar's Pizza stores in San Antonio, in fact, there is one in the town where I live 30 miles south of San Antonio, so possibly the closings of those Little Caesar's Pizza stores must be a regional thing.

I remember Godfather's Pizza in San Antonio very well as they had a few places there but they closed up in the early 1990's, IIRC.

Since there was a mention of Colt 45 beer, does anyone remember the Schiltz Malt Liquor commercials with the stampeding bull?

And about Kool-Aid, there are some TV commercials on YouTube from 1969 that feature The Monkees and Bugs Bunny. These commercials are awesome especially the one with the Monkees in the desert. Bugs Bunny briefly appeared on packets of Kool-Aid.

I have just thought of some more old time products and if they are still around.

Wonder bread

Eskimo Pies

Dad's Root Beer

Frostie Root Beer (I really loved that soda when I was a kid)

Mr. Pibb

Burger Chef was acquired by Hardee's in the early 80's. There was a lawsuit over the deal and one remaining Burger Chef remained opened in Tennessee until the lawsuit was settled about ten years ago. Hardee's, now owned by Carl's Jr, will occasionally bring back the "Big Chef" as a promotion.

Druther's was acquired by Dairy Queen about twenty years ago. But to my surprise I found a Burger Queen co-located in a Shell Station just south of Tazwell, Tennessee circa 2001.

There were 1 or 2 when I lived in Amarillo several years ago; their website shows not only are they still open, there are many locations

that bull knocked down any door or wall in it's way!!

I have just thought of some more old time products and if they are still around.

Wonder bread
still made, may be regional as far as availability; I think their corp. parent has had a bit of a time financially

Eskimo Pies
still made, just sold last year to Dreyer's

Dad's Root Beer
still made, not sure of availability; Walgreen's also sells store-brand bags of root-beer-flavored candy with the Dad's logo on it, guess it's supposed to taste like the drink

Frostie Root Beer (I really loved that soda when I was a kid)
still made, now by a co. in central TX; not sure how widely available they are

Mr. Pibb
Coca-Cola still makes it, may be a regional distribution thing (like Tab or one of the other obscure Coke brands) I've seen it recently marketed as 'Pibb Xtra' (more sugar? more caffeine? both?) and 'Pibb Zero' (a diet version) but I don't know if that's nationwide or not

AYDS diet candy? My mother used to eat that stuff back in the '60s! ;D The name alone would knock it out of contention now!

My mom had caramel AYDS around 1974. On summer days this then-13 yo would eat them like candy while watching "Now You See It" with Jack Narz and other game shows.

They're still around -- many Hess gas stations (in Florida, at least) sell Godfather's Pizza.

Though in that episode, Bugs' role was very brief, in which he merely asked if The Monkeys were thirsty.

By that time, though, The Monkees, then in Saturday morning reruns, were running out of gas.

Wonder Bread -- yes.
Mr. Pibb -- yes, as "Pibb Xtra" in many places.

As for root beer -- whatever happened to "Hires"?

What about all the old brands of beer that are never advertised anymore...Blatz (I'm from Milwaukee and I oughta know), Drewrys, Carling Black Label, Stroh's, Falstaff, Genesee, Burger, Schoengling...That just covers the midwest, so I bet there are a bunch of brands in other parts of the country that used to advertise heavily on TV before the Anheuser-Busch/Miller/Coors stranglehold. (Rheingold, Schaefer, Lucky Lager, and Burgie come to mind.) I am pretty sure Stroh's is still around, not so sure on the others. And what about Schlitz? They were a solid number 3 for years till the late 70's and then fell off sharply due to a number of factors.

Blatz, Falstaff, Strohs, Schlitz, Schaeffer, Old Milwaukee, Old Style, and many other older beer brands are now owned by Pabst. However, Pabst stopped selling Falstaff in 2005.

The Pabst Brewing Company doesn't actually brew beer anymore and hasn't since they closed their last brewery (Schaeffer in Allentown PA) in 2001. Miller actually makes the beer.

Haven't read the whole thread, so pardon me if the following has been said already, but anyway...

"Brought to you by Schaefer as another great event in the Schaefer Circle of Sports. Schaefer, the one beer to have when you're having more than one." That slogan, sadly, wouldn't leave the drawing board today. :(

I remember Steve Martin once while playing the banjo, said, "When you're with me, it's like bein' at Shakey's Pizza."

Remember Burger Chef restaurants? With Burger Chef and Jeff?
And their evil nemesis, Count Fangburger?

I know they still make Kool-Aid, but I haven't seen it advertised lately. I still remember the big Kool-Aid pitcher crashing through the wall at the bowling alley! (But then again, I'm not a kid anymore, so I no longer watch children's television.)
"Oh Yeeeaaaahhhh! Crash-a-bang-a-boom-bam..."

And remember Proctor and Gamble products with the moon and stars logo on the side?
Didn't Amway try to use that to prove that P&G was involved in the occult?

I can't help but notice that Orville Redenbacher's popcorn has brought back old footage of him in their advertising lately! It's been years since he died!
Those are much better than the CGI Orville spots they ran for a while...

And I liked the old Colt 45 beer commercials even though I was just a kid when those were on.
Remember the one with Redd Foxx when the set was destroyed around him, and he responded, "Well, that's urban renewal for you!"

Still around, was bought out by Cadbury Schweppes in 1989; co-claims to be America's oldest soft drink

I don't think you can find Hires in Florida anymore -- ever since Coke and Pepsi came out with Barq's and Mug, respectively, those and "Dad's" practically muscled Hires (and Frostie) off the shelves.
