I've been gone from Memphis radio for ten years. My last gig was Oldies 98 with Melody Meadows. If any of you posters out there ever worked at FM100, WRVR or Oldies 98 (before it was Star 98) I'd like to catch up with you. Bill Hickok [email protected]

You, sir, were the king of the one-man two-voice live bit, back in the days of carts (a sort of Phil Hendrie before there was a Phil Hendrie). I don't think I ever got to work with you, but listened to you from across town and enjoyed what you did. I have since worked at all of the above.

Were you there when they were "Target 98" and threatened with a lawsuit by the Target store chain? I joked that Big Star would sue them over the Star 98 name! ;D I still have a bumper sticker from when they were "The Lion, Rock 98." That was around 1987 or so!

Thanks for the kind words Rob. We never did cross paths in the years I was in Memphis. At least not that I can remember. I'm still doing the old dinosaur bits I did in Memphis, only here in North Dakota. Seems they haven't heard of that kind of radio up here. Speaking of old timers, I've been googling for Terrance McKeever lately, and can't seem to track him down. (Not stalking mind you) Terrance & I teamed for a couple of years at FM100. I went to his wedding in Tampa years ago and lost track of him after he was in Corpus Christi. Anyone out there heard anything?

"bits I did in Memphis"

....I can hear it again right now....'Hep, hep, hep, hepppp I'm white and I can't get down!' Then again, you weren't known for dancing Billcephus. hahahahhaahha!!!!!

Wow, I should come here to read more often. I worked with Terrance McKeever in Corpus Christi at KOUL back in 1996 when he was doing the morning show with Doc Weldon. Nearly everyone on staff there ended up blown out by the end of '97, I returned to Massachusetts, then, after I'd been in Memphis for a few years and opened my website, around 2002, Doc Weldon got hold of me to set straight some rumors that McKeever had died... apparently, at last report, which for me woulda been sometime in '05, Terrance McKeever is or was still around, living in AZ I think. I'd have to poll a few contacts but I've lost contact with many folks in the last two years or so.

and... HEY! to my Memphis friends, how are y'all?!

Steve West, alive and well near Waterbury CT.

Good to hear from Hickok! I was doing radio in Jackson at about the same time he and McKeever were in Memphis at FM100. It brings back memories. I was doing country radio at the time but I always loved to listen to Hickok, Prestagiacomo, Memphis Mike Murphy, Andy Parks and the others doing their thing at FM100. Thanks for allowing me to wax nostalgic.

I would but I lost your email address long ago :( [email protected] is mine. I'm outta radio now, just doing internet stuff. The whole biz sucks now with more knives in the back than ever after my last gig.

Hey Steve.
Last I heard, you were back in Memphis.
Shoot me an e-mail and catch me up.

Terrence McKeever lives in Florida. He is no longer in radio and has had some health problems.

Looking for dj

Hey all..

I was told that a dj friend (we worked together at WIVK-FM in Knoxville back in the 90's) might still be in the Memphis market. Last I heard was he came from K-town to Memphis to work at a classic rock-formatted station.
Was wondering if anyone has heard of Chuck Underwood. He would probably be in his late 40's or so.
Thanks,
Radiomoniker

Hi Bill I worked with you at FM100. I now live in Dallas and play lawyer.
On weekends i work for abc partime. Gald to hear you are doing well.

I'm sure if anyone has seen Chuck that Chuck has not seen you.

Bill Hickok...well, that name certainly brings back some nostalgia.

I never met or worked with Bill but I remember listening to him over the years.

I most vividly remember his work at WRVR. Bill was a consistent, talented workhorse at a station that, because of its format constraints, posed a real challenge for air talent to be entertaining and memorable. But Bill managed to do just that, day in and day out.

If I were a station owner, that is one guy that I could comfortably leave holding the fort while I was gone for 6 months, knowing that he'd be giving it 100% and everything would be in good hands. Reliable talent like that is scarce, and was so even back in the days when radio was king.

It's a shame Bill is no longer in Memphis. There was something unique about him, and for those of us who aren't morning people by nature, listening to him was the audio equivalent of a good cup of coffee.

;D ;D Wow!! Thanks carrotcake! I hope some GM's and PD's read your entry and give me a call. It might even seem that I used a different log-in and wrote it myself. Hmmmm, not a bad idea. It was almost like pulling teeth sometimes to get a bit on the air. Every morning, Steve Butler and I would go in the production room, record our bits and then meet with GM Terry Wood and PD Jim Robertson. If they thought it was funny and not too long, then we got the green light. Still wish Memphis was my home. I always seemed to be at the right station at the wrong time in Memphis. At FM100 when Gary Guthrie left, my days were numbered when Gary Wall came in. We never saw eye to eye. At WRVR, it was simple downsizing, although now they have a two person show again. Then at Oldies 98 (KOOL 98) Target 98) (Star 98) Melody and I had the mornings up to a 5 share (from a 2) in a year when they pulled the plug on us and went to the 80's format. Memphis will always be my home away from home, until I can get back again. P.S. Snooky the Bookie, Uncle Walter, Cistern Collingswood III, and all my alter-egos say thanks for remembering.

I worked at the RiVeR in the 90's when we gave birth to the Frog. Never was the same place after that. I miss Memphis radio, it was the stuff legends are made of.
But then again, every radio geek in every radio town probably says the same thing. You know back before there were 5 companys that own all of 'um.
