Old (really old) UHF tv listings

Does anyone have listings for the UHF independents that went on in the early 1950s, specifically around Houston and Dallas? I'd love to see them..I'm sure they're out there, and would make for interesting reading since so many failed shortly after they went on the air. Also KETX TV in Longview, Texas would be cool to look at as well...it had a rough life, barely hanging on and finally gave up the ghost.

Wish I could help:The "really old" (1953-54) listings I have would be for stations such as:

Channel 73 WFMJ Youngstown, Oh.
Channel 27 WKBN Youngstown, Oh
Channel 49 WAKR Akron, Oh.

Plus, I have one Philly reprint TV Guide (1953) that has

33-WEEU Reading, Pa.
61-WHUM Reading, Pa.
43 WSBA York, Pa.
46 WFPG Atlantic City, NJ

Hey, T.T., sorry but I've had car issues of late, haven't been able to get to the library in Tyler to look those up for you. I'm doing good to get back and forth to work these days! In the meantime, I can try one of the big libraries up here and look at some of their microfilms of the Dallas paper(s)...they may have listed some non-DFW stations back in the earliest TV days.

UHFs in Texas, huh? Given the flat terrain of much of east Texas, it's possible, I suppose, that the signals might have carried a bit further than, say, in the Appalachians or the Rockies, but certainly they would not have carried far enough to be competitive with the big VHF stations. I would suppose that none of the early ones every got a network affiliation, but I may be wrong. It sure will be interesting to find out! As they say, "giddy up, pardners."

knuz tv houston was affliated with dumont tv network could not compete with the vhf channels kgul tv galveston kprc tv houston

Tim L,
Channel 73 WFMJ Youngstown, Oh.
Channel 27 WKBN Youngstown, Oh
Channel 49 WAKR Akron, Oh.

(and) 46 WFPG Atlantic City, NJ
would be interesting to me!
Thanks.

KNUZ Houston, October 27, 1953:

3pm - What’s Cookin’ - hosted by Wilma Rutherford, a former model, graduate of TCU, and veteran of theater and radio/television. She had hosted the first cooking show on Texas television on WBAP-TV in Fort Worth, her hometown, several years earlier, then worked for KFI-TV in Los Angeles and KRLD-TV, Dallas, before coming to Houston. She had a maid that helped on the show.

3:30pm - Window Shop - described unusual values in local shops.

4pm - Paul’s Place - hosted by 23 year old Paul Berlin, popular KNUZ-AM disc jockey, was described as an ‘open house for viewers who like the lighter side of music and small talk,’ with Jan Stewart, a comedienne, on hand as a foil. The show would be aimed at teenagers with films of musical acts and visits with artists in town. The show would take place in the studio which had a bleacher section to accommodate a live audience.

4:45pm - Cartoon Caper
5pm - KNUZ Ranch
6pm - Rhythm Roundup
6:30pm - News, Weather
6:45pm - TBA
7pm - Long Shot
8pm - Danger Assignment
8:30pm - TV Auction - simulcast with KNUZ-AM
9pm - Movie
10:30pm - Twilight - a windup for the day with news, weather and music as requested

...not anywhere near Texas, but I have the Christmas Week 1954 listings of WOKY-TV/19 and WCAN-TV/25 in Milwaukee, two months before the two stations were merged into WXIX-TV/19 by new owner CBS. WOKY had just had its ABC and Du Mont primary affiliations swiped from it by WTVW/12 (now WISN-TV) in October, and WCAN was the CBS affiliate being sold by Lou Poller. Anyone up for it? ;-) ...
