Old School dance station

Hi everyone. I am the Radio Kid. I often frequent this board, but don't write here because, well, I mean, with only 13 dance stations nationwide, with a handfull of internet stations out there, what really is there to say.

I do, however, have a question that I would like to ask of some dance fans who are in the know about what dance stations are out there. I am a dance music fan, and listen to a lot of dance music over the internet. My only complaint is this: All the dance stations I've heard out there focus on current dance hits. However, I am 22-years-old, and started listening to dance music in the 90's. I would like to hear some of that music when I listen to dance. My question is this: Is there a dance station, terestrial or internet I don't care, that is heavy on 80's and 90's dance music, with some currents thrown in for good measure? I haven't been able to find one. If it exists, I'd like to know. Also, it would be great if this station uses Windows Media Player to stream, or has a pop-up. I use an adaptive computer, and windows media is the only streaming service besides pop-ups that my computer will work with. Well, if there's anything out there like what I'm looking for, please let me know.

You beat me to it Cheffo.... Yes Indeed, 1club.fm has all the oldschool and new school dance you could evr ask for, I think you will be amazed by the selection.

I'm heavy on 90's Dance when I'm on...

When we first launched Hot 96, it was based solely on classic dance tracks, in fact it played every crossover track that Hot 103/97 WQHT played from 1986 til 1992. Problem was, our CUME was really sh*tty and it got to where even I couldn't stand listening to the station. So eventually we morphed with more currents. The problem with that, is as you add more currents, you need to be able to get new tracks from the labels and artist. Obviously, they want maximum exposure for their artist and so you try to get them increased spins. Well, as you do this you find that you need to reduce the amount of "Gold" in your clocks (I am greatly simplifying this..)

At a certain point I was faced with a dilema, did we want to skew younger or older? Because alot of the classic's that we were playing were obscure or forgotten titles, it tended to chase listeners away more often then not, and to be honest I was trying to whore the station out so we could build more audience. As of right now, the huge majority of our playlist is from the last 10 years (with some very strong tracks from 94-98.) There is one slow catagory that has many of the older titles, but a large percentage of the pre-93 tracks have been pulled back for Sunday mornings when we do all retro.

I may be revisiting this again because our numbers haven't been so "HOT" lately, and I may start bringing back the deeper dance cuts and slowing some of the currents down, try to increase our TSL.

Being one of your number one listeners, I would be disappointed to see Hot 96 lean back on Gold again. I like the Breaky Miami Bass type tracks you play. Personally if I were you, I would stay current, but still play some classics, and maybe add some more Rap Remixes and current Rhythmic hits that have a clubby feel to them. I think a sound like the old 95.3 Party Orlando would be a good sound for your station,,,, Or a similar sound to how Power 96 Miami and B-96 Chicago sounded during the late 90s when they were phasing in more Rap, but still had alot of Dance in the playlist... Dont get me wrong, I do love the gold stuff you play, but I like it mixed lightly into the current stuff... Please Dont abandon the current playlist, I can help you get more listeners.

Also, you might want to know that my buddy works at a movie theatre, and they relay the Hot 96 stream over the sound system before the movie starts, sometimes exposing the station to several hundred listeners at once. Also, my buddy Greg in Gatlinburg tennessee has recently started relaying the Hot 96 stream over his Part 15 fm transmitter and it covers the whole town legally, since he is up on a mountain top and has a 30 foot mast to broadcast on. I know this isnt the idea town for a Dance station, but im sure some people do listen since we have so few stations down there. Im thinking of getting a Part 15 FCC accepted transmitter to rebroadcast it here, but I would try to keep the signal confined to my housing edition, about half mile radious, I could use 96.1 or 96.5.

I also like Sun and Diego-Falling Apart,,, Has a Cascada sound without being a total rip off like some sound alikes ive heard. Something else you might want to consider is contact Russ Haney at 1club.fm, he's been known to let other stations use his site and bandwidth to broadcast their channel. There are plenty of ways to get more listeners, but I dont think playing obscure 80s Dance is gonna attract many people. I have heard some good classics on your station that I hadnt heard in years, but gold is good in short doses, maybe 3 golds an hour, and the rest be current Dance with a Breaks Bass lean, and the more Dancy hip hop.

Yeah, I am running two an hour in 2 of the 3 clocks I rotate in the day. Thank you for the compliments, and it's nice to know that we are getting listeners in other locations that may not be directly connected to the web. I usually run through my Gold library once a month to freshen it up, so maybe this next month I will spice it up with some crossover classics (I have some REAL gems in the library..)

My biggest concern with adding crossover/hip-hop tracks is chasing away the core audience. Some can deal with the occasional club friendly track (best example "Yeah" by Usher.) But I am not going to drop in something like Dialated Peoples or Black Moon (remember them?) In the past I have taken chances (and usually dayparted the heck) on tracks that I felt didn't completely right-turn the sound of the station. For instance, right now, I have "Lolli Lolli" restricted to my evening and overnight day parts, but I also had a track by J Status a few weeks ago that is now in recurrent that ran unrestricted.

But thank-you for the feedback, I definitely do enjoy some feedback from listeners of Hot 96.

Its easy to find 80's dance music on the dial. Here in Philly Q102 plays freestyle tracks as gold and My106.1 is heavy with freestyle and early 90s dance and pop. Dance music really took huge steps backward in the 90s and didn't get much radio support. That is probably why it is hard to get 90's music its hard to play it as gold when most of your audience never heard it when its was out. Try Z889.org. We play some freestyle and every once in a while a Corona, Real Mccoy, or Fun Factory track....not to mention the really good stuff from 98 to now kinda KTUish of the early 2000.

Hello all again,

Thanks for the reccomendations for 1club.fm. Unfortunatly, the 90's dance channel wasn't what I was looking for. Great music, but it wasn't the dance music I was hearing on the radio back then.

Unfortunatly, it looks as if there's no station that plays the dance pop hits heard on the radio from about 1988 to 2000. I find this to be very sad. Don't get me wrong, currents are great. But some of us want to hear the music that was being played on our radios way back then. If I could program a dance station, it would play such artests as: Real Mccoy, Fun Factory, Corona, Shannon, Steevie B., ETC. Plus, I'd play remixes of pop tunes from the 80's and 90's (anyone remember the remix to "My Heart Will Go On?) I'd throw in a current twice an hour. This is exactly the kind of station I'm looking for, and can't seem to find. I know that "The Original Hot 97 has the kind of gold I'm looking for, but they play soooo many currents in their rotation, it's anoying!

However, someone here mentioned Z889? I've heard of this station. However, I can't find a windows media friendly stream for it. It mainly uses Real Player. Because of the talking Jaws software I must use because of my disability, my computer won't support anything other than windows media, or a radio station pop-up player. If anyone knows of a way to hear this station, I'm all ears.

Thanks again to everyone on this board for your help, and your thoughts. I enjoy stopping by, and reading what you guys post here.

It sounds like the 1club.fm would be closest to what your looking for. It seems like you are mainly wanting the big dance hits that crossed over to the mainstream top 40 charts. 1club.fm 90s dance channel goes a little deeper than that, but it should be fairly close to what your looking for, you may not know every single song that plays, even I dont remember all of them, but it doesnt hurt to discover a few tracks either. If I were you I would give 1club.fm another listen, give it a few hours and im sure you will hear several familiar songs that were heard on POP radio back then. I really want to help you find what your looking for, but since your limited to stations using Windows media player it makes it more difficult, cause most stations stream using mp3 and even AAC these days.

Hey Radio Kid,

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but Energy Az is sometimes 50% Gold! (which is sometimes a complaint). So if you are into retro dance, stream the station I work for. The PD, Beau Duran, does a Flashback Lunch every M-F, and I do a retro Mix Sunday nights from 7 - 9pm.

Hello DJ Perry,

Thanks for telling me about your station. I've streamed it before, but didn't know that you did a retro mix show. I'll be sure to check it out. I've written more to you in an email.

Dear Mid West Clubber,

First, before I say anything else, I will tell you that I have frequented these boards a lot, even before I was able to join as a poster. I've read many of your posts, and they seem to all make since. You are an entelegent person. Also, you seem to like a lot of different music, something we have in common.

I read your last reply to me about the 1club.fm 90's dance channel. Before that, I tried that channel, upon the recommendations of other posters on this board, and the night I did so, I left disappointed by the fact that I wasn't hearing much 90's dance pop crossover. However, upon your advice, I've checked out the channel several more times, and I'm glad I did. Over the last few days, I've heard much of the music I've been looking for. I've heard everything from Captain Hollywood project's "More And More" to Aqua's "Barbie Girl!" Right now, at 9-42 PM EST, their playing Nickie French's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." This is great! And, in all honesty, if you hadn've posted a reply, I would've given up on this channel, and would've missed all this great music! Oh, sure, there are some unknown songs, but I am discovering them, and getting used to, and liking some of them. This IS what I'm looking for! Thank you sooo much for your help!
