Old school disc jockey

Being an old geezer I remember when this was the norm. Live and local and pros that talked to the audience as if they were in the studio with them. Growing up outside of New York city, I had the pleasure to listen to the great WABC. We even had a great oldies station in Orlando in WOCL, WSHE and WEBG. They had great jocks and did well in the market until Clear Channel decided Spanish would be more profitable. As an example WMGF-FM 107.7 with Dave Collins and Leslye Gayle has been number 1 in the mornings in the last 4 of 5 books.

i grew up in orlando listening to the likes of Rock Robinson - who lived down the street from me in pine hills - on WHOO. Then i jumped over to WLOF where i used to listen to the lineup of Bill Denis, Tom 'The Body Beautiful' Clarke - the late Wayne trout who i worked for a little bit at 740 WINZ, John Lander, Sam Idas and Blue Christie.....later on the lineup changed to Jim Casey in the middays, lander in the morning and TC dooley at night......

ah, those were the days........

I worked as a jock in Orlando radio for a few years. The fact that the show was live and nothing on the air was automated was what got my juices flowing. I prided myself on keeping those commercial spots tight and doing a great segue between songs. I've been out of the business for about 5 years now, and I took a colleague who's never been in broadcasting to an afternoon show at an Orlando station through a connection I had there. I was surprised and disappointed that all of the music was on computer. Whatever happened to cueing up records and doing your own segs? Even the mixing is automated now!

I honestly don't understand the appeal of having a computer do everything for you. It's like it's not even your show. It's another example of the station taking away the jock's personality and flavor and making each and every show follow this same, linear standard.

It's really too bad.

Well, the 'baby' DJ's look at me funny when I tell them Im still using card-machines and do all the mixing myself. Ofcourse, all music is on a computer, but it's being used like a CD-player, I don't let the computer do all the work, no mixing from DJ PC.

I agree, if you let the computer do all the work, you're noting doing a radio show yourself. But hey, thats just me...

I'll throw in a set of calls from a station I listened to while visiting in 1992. WGTO. An AM up in the 1500s I think. Mostly 60s music, live jocks that seemed quite good. Fun to listen to.

It's a shame radio like that is gone, but maybe no one but us radio geeks liked it anyway. I did a few months of weekends on both "Live assist" and "voice track" here in FL last year. I just didn't find the enthusiasm I had when I was cueing singles, punching carts and editing tape with a razor...

there was another oldies station up the dial - they were located out in Osceola county area - kevin casey, a former BJ105 jock worked there.

i am fortunate to work weekends at a station that allows us to play CDs if warranted, which means they song isn't in the box/computer yet.

WOTS went Spanish in 1999.

I did weekday nights there for a while in the early 90s. Then I recruited Kevin Casey to replace me. We had worked together at BJ105.

The oldies playlist went back into the fifties. The air staff wore Hawaiian shirts. It was a fun place to work, with an old-time radio feel.

The studio was storefront so people could watch, and we brought them in off the street to do weather, etc.

hey old guy, i practically grew up on BJ 105......when did you work there???

i remember kevin casey did afternoon drive.

i interned at WLOF/BJ105 in the early 80s when WLOF was off old winter garden rd and bj was off hazard st. on a golf course......

Stretching the meaning of "work" to its bursting point, 1986-1990.

Boy...Old Winter Garden Road...That was a "hellava road " to travel half-looped at Midnight!

i remember some convenience gas station at the corner there and ring rd. was dark as hell. Saw a couple guys get stuck in the long driveway to the station. I was out in the middle of nowhere.

I assisted the evening guy at WLOF in 1980 when i was at UCF. he was mark mckay. it was the station i grew up listening too. I would later work at Clear channel for two of the jocks i listened to. Tom Clarke and TC Dooley.

I think 1220 became a Spanish station.
Old town is still there. But no radio there. Oh they plated 50s and 60 s music and had nights with Car Hops
it was alot of fun. I would drive from Palm bay to Old town some nights. Of course gas was around $1 20 a gallon then!

that was it, old town, they played music from the 70s mostly as i recall.

what happened? did they go out of business?

I worked weekend overnights at BJ on Hazard Street starting in '83 and throughout '84 after they moved to Lee Road in Winter Park. Those AM towers are still there today off Hazard Street, I believe. Can still see them from I-4. What station do those belong to?

Hazard street WAS a hole, I agree. But let me tell you, I grew up throughout Jr Hi and High School listening to BJ105, and to be a 20 year old kid and become one of the jocks... man, that was unbelievable to me. I thought I was dreaming! I wish someone had taken a photo of me in that old control room.
