Old School Hip Hop on Urban AC Stations

There's been some threads on some of the other pages about old school hip-hop and it's lack of presence on urban AC stations. I'm curious as to what Urban ACs have an old school hip hop show. Please list those that you're aware of. The ones I know....

WJMR- Milwaukee--> Friday and Saturday nights from 6 - 9.
WQNC - Charlotte--> Saturday nights from 6 - 10
WRBO- Memphis
WUHT- Birmingham-- > Saturday mornings

Any others??

Im glad they dont!!!!

There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between HIP HOP and R&B (You can dispise one or the other while loving the other)

DJ Red Alert back on Kiss-Fm New York ( WRKS-New York Urban A/C ) .

I agree that there is a difference but back then ('80s/early '90s) the R&B and hip hop artists were being played on the same stations. The format wasn't as fragmented so if you're targeting a demo that grew up during this time, I think playing old school hip hop on UACs could work. Do you not agree that it's a good fit?

DJ Red Alert also spins live down here in ATL on Sunday nights on "102.5 GROWN FOLKS RADIO."

"102.5 GROWN FOLKS RADIO" here in ATL has a live club broadcast from 7pm-12midnight on Fridays and Saturdays that plays old school hip-hop and New Jack swing.

True enough. I have worked for many Urban AC/Hip Hop formats in the late 80s to early 90s, and proud of it. It does work. Keep the days with smooth UAC and sprinkle some nice (not the pseudo thuggish stuff) hip hop and R&B during afternoon drive. Eves? Go mostly hip hop for the younger demo. It works well. The advent of radio killed that format. This great format went from UAC to UAC/Hip Hop to all rap. No riffs, rhythms and reason. Just music so censored, you can't get a feel for what's throwin' down unless you download the tune.

Besides, most of today's great urban jocks come from that kind of format. It works... and well.

Red makes me Dizzy

BLS to Kiss to Hot97 Back to Kiss to Power 105 Back to Kiss Never seen a DJ switch so many times

1st generation Urban AC avoided ANY type of Hiphop whatsoever Even Removing Rap versus in R&B songs. The newer Urban ACs new keep the Rap Lyrics in songs and Play some Old School Hip hop. KissFM NYC "evolved" Starting with NO Rap at all, to at one time right before Power 105 launched, moving almost all the way back to Urban, Some Saturday Nights they Played more Rap than Hot97. a Week before Power launched Kiss Removed All Rap again. Recently Kiss now plays some Old school Hip hop and returned the Rap verses in "some" of their songs again.

I think Urban AC in General will Evolve and Old School Hip Hop will be included in the Majority and no longer the minority of the format
