Old Skool 1010 online..one channel or out of phase?

I gotta admit..I like the music on 1010..and when the processing is setup right it sounds really good on AM. Often it is waaay distorted and just unlistenable..so I use the Bluetooth feature. On the iPhone and listen in the car online.

Does anyone there care that..online.. often the vocals are either non existent or otherwise buried and all you hear is reverb. Practically all Luther Vandross tracks suffer from this issue.

Hopefully this could be easily fixed. I would almost bet that some where in the analog part of the audio chain there is a tip / ring (+ / -) reversed on one of the audio channels. I had a patch set up in the production room this way to cancel out the vocals on many 60's and 70's stereo recordings. Kinda like a do it yourself version of Karaoke.

I've heard that effect before even when it was WGUN. Most likely the file was screwed up when it was uploaded to their download service. Station personnel do not listen to every file as it is assembled into the playlist. Most likely that person is answering the phones and doing book keeping duties as well. And when presented with the problem, they will say it came down that way, what am I supposed to do?
They have state of the art equipment including a relatively new Harris solid state transmitter. But they are probably down to a one-person operation these days.
The programmer should check some other download services such as 4shared.com or pleer.com for a better mp3 file. If you've ever downloaded music, you know that there are many mp3 that are really not airworthy.

Then it most likely is a reversed + / - in just one of the the stereo channels in the analog part of the audio processing.

A lot of radio studios have a monitor speaker / headphone switch in the control room that you can switch between Program, On Air (from a receiver or off the modulation meter), and the B channel. The On Air function is different with HD or an internet STL which I believe 1010 does not use. A lot of folks working at AM stations often switch the monitor switch to the "program" option because it is in stereo and doesn't have any static during lightning storms. You often will not hear the reversed + / - on stereo speakers or headphones. It is noticeable when both channels are mixed into mono and only on songs were the vocals are equal levels in both channels.

Old Skool 1010 is not HD AM so it's band-width limited to less than 10 KHZ. Even a low bit rate mp3 should work. Also 1010 AM is LMA'ed to Edgewater Broadcasting that runs Streetz 94.5. One would assume that the downloaded music would be the same quality that they use on 94.5.

Whoa! I missed this one.

The problem is in the input to the streaming equipment and not on air.
Yes, one channel is inverted. The Luther Vandross selections probably have more separation.
The distortion is probably too much level hitting the input.
Probably +4 hitting a -10 input.
I doubt if station personnel listen to the streaming. They're probably out selling spots, listening to air, in the car.
A real low bit rate would sound warbly on the air- even in AM.
I don't know if anybody is still using an analog STL.
