Old sports scores: What is gained by them?

Traditionally when radio stations play countdowns of a certain date (for instance April 6, 1972) the host names the TV shows and movies popular at that time. And then they say "The Yankees lost to the Twins by a score of ..." and the Rangers skated to a 2-2 tie...). What is to be gained by telling old scores. Listeners want to know about popular culture back then, but do they care if the local teams won or lost? And what the actual scores were?

Yes to both questions because listeners want to hear the Radio Truth IMO.

I could be wrong but I believe they'd only mention sports scores if it was a ridiculous score like the Mets beat the Cubs 22 -19; 22 - 0; or if the game mentioned meant something, the Knicks came back 18 points down to beat the Milwaukee Bucks by a point (remember that game where they scored the last 19 points of the game?) or the Rangers won their first Stanley Cup since 1940.
