Just saw some old pictures of the KVIL studios on Mockingbird Lane, one of my all-time favorite studios. Also, really liked the KBOX studios on McCree Rd. KLIF at Triangle Point was pretty rare air also. Any old timers have favorites?

Old Studios

I didn't think of it as old until realizing that is has been 20 years now...so I nominate the KQZY facilities in Reunion Tower as my favorite.
I tired of the elevator ride each afternoon and the view never became routine. During some straight line winds back in 1987, it did sway just a bit up there.
Unlike some of the other staffers, I did enjoy interacting with the people who came up to see the observation deck, especially the Razorback fans in town for the SWC tournament happening some 54 floors below. Growing up in Pittsburgh, the KQV street level studios were influential to my attitudes. And KQZY's facilities reminded me of that.

OK...does anyone remember the old WRR (AM and FM) studios at Fair Park? When the fair was not on...it was very creepy to be around the studios especially at night. AM towers used to be at Flag Pole Hill. And then there were the old KSKY studios in the penthouse floor of the Stonleigh. (sp?)

There were no windows and the studio walls were 2 feet thick.The setup was built around the auditorium and stage back in the days of live broadcasts. It was a maze of small offices, low ceilings, dim lighting, up and down steps and small narrow hallways. If you were looking for someone you had better know where to look. Most memorable was the Dr. Pepper machine which, in the early '70's, would still only accept nickles due to Mr. Durward Tucker's directive. He was GM and would not pay more than 5 cents for his favorite drink.

I guess the KJIM building was the same one that KFJZ was in during it's 870 days. I remember working in that building, near downtown Ft. Worth, Tower was in backyard of the studio. Don't remember the street name at the moment. There are pictures of it as the KFJZ building in one of Scott Fybush's DFW tower site tours on his website. (My sucess rate at posting links is pretty low, I'll leave that for others.)
I loved the old KQZY setup-with the exception of the weirdo’s that would occasionally get stuck up on the observation level after they shut the elevators off. It was a pain to get down to the office, and just grab something though. The room sounded horrible, and I hated those Ward-Beck consoles, but it sure was 'showy' as we said "from high atop reuinion tower..."
I do recall Triangle Point as a kid, and recall how old, musty and in disrepair the place was. KILT was not much better when we would visit there in the 70's.
As far as plush, I recall that KXOL's place on West 7th was like walking in to a living room, with the exception of the cigarette machine. KLIF/KPLX was slightly dated by the mid 80's but still nice in Arlington, and when they moved to 3500 Maple, that was about as nice a studio and office setup I ever worked in. Probably still that way today.
I graduated from L.D. Bell, and drove straight there to push the very first button in that building. What an experience for a 17 year old!

I have fond memories of the old KBOX facilities on McCree. When I came to Dallas in late 1979, I remember seeing the shrubbery in front of the building. It had been cut to read, K B O X. Quite a work of art by someone! A wonderful memory from that time.....the legendary Ken Knox was on our sister station KMEZ and he would often tell me some great stories about Gordon McClendon and KLIF!

........ah yes. Those hedges on the hillside in front of the studios that spelled out K B O X. And let's not forget the endless challenges from the squirrels chewing on the coax to towers 3 & 4 (those next to the residences on the South side). It provided many an excuse to leave the power up at 5KW until repairs could be made and patterns re-tuned. And of course, we remember the bullet-proof glass installed in the control room following an episode of an unhappy listener that did not get his request quick enough!
I had the privilege of working at KVIL in 4 different buildings. My favorite, by far was atop the Park Cities Bank in Highland Park Village. Watching the sun come up over the golf course was nice.

I got to work in the studios that housed Z Rock, and then later on became the Oasis. It was down the hall from the old KLUV studios, and was in some disrepair by the time I got up there to run boards for the newly flipped MEGA. I always thought about what those walls would say if they could...
