Old Top 40's in Anchorage and KYAK 650 country.

Hey Guys:

I can't seem to find this anywhere but can anybody give me the history of AM Top 40 radio in the 50's 60's and 70's in Anchorage? I know that in the 80's 550 KENI, KFQD 750 and KBYR 700 where all AC's. And when did 650 KYAK start there country format? It is amazing that it stayed country to 1997.

Thanks for your help on this history question.
T.J.

KANC 1080 also was a top 40 station thru out much of the 70s and into 80s. KENI, KBYR and KFQD did the top 40 thing pretty much off & on until 1974 or so when KGOT 101.3 came on the air and Top 40 on AM started to die off.

Re: Old Top 40's in Anchorage and KYAK 650 country. (New Info)

AZ Joe:

Thanks for the reply. YES, KANC 1080 did Top 40 from 1975 to 1982. When I did my research from the broadcast yearbooks I think I came up with some timelines for the other Top 40's. Dates are approximate.

550 KENI Top 40 1960 to 1984

700 KBYR Top 40 1965 to 1974

750 KFQD Top 40 1962 to 1971?? I think. There was no format info in the yearbooks from 1971 to 1972. But the listing in the 1973 book was MOR.

I anybody can correct me on these dates it would be a big help!! KYAK Country did start in 1967 when the station signed on in June at 630. It went to 650 in 1970.

Thanks
T.J.
