Today I went to a flea market here in Denver. They had a bunch of old TV Guides they were selling for 30 dollars each. I noticed the local listings were removed. The girl working the desk told me that quote "..the listings were removed because nobody wants to see old television listings !!". I told her that she was dead wrong and that TV Guide isn't worth much WITHOUT the local listings. Is an old TV Guide worth it without the local listings ?? The people I talked to about it say YES.

Old TV Guides...listings or no listings ??

That is an insane theory that people who would buy an old TV Guide don’t want the local listings ! The local listing section is a history of the area, program schedules of the day; local TV channel ads and sometimes other local ads; I can’t imagine why the really remove the local listings (the reason you were given is either insane or bogus IMO).
I have actually seen this on eBay...people selling only the articles and not the local listings. Even selling just the COVERS! The listings are the #1 reason why I have a sizable collection of guides, dating back to 1955. These people aren't getting any profit from me either. Might as well sell them for a dime a piece because that's all they are worth without the listings.
OTOH I used to see plenty of 1970s TVGs on eBay for $3-$5, now they are much harder to find in that price range. There's an eBay seller in PA that I used to buy from often, he always had some '70s or '80s issues, and not just PA - Nebraska, some Illinois editions, and also bought a Canadian TV Guide once...which was the Saskatchewan edition no less. I even bought a 1959 issue from him once for about $4. That issue was from Kansas City.

I would reply that the sellers must have way too much time on their hands to take the time and effort to remove the local listings! Also why would they want to insult potential customers by making such an ignorant remark?
I guess this is a case to each their own. I have a collection of old TV Guides and my roommate thinks they are trash. I watch old TV shows from the 50s and 60s and listen to oldies music. He always say to me get with the program and watch shows like Big Bang Theory, the new Will & Grace or that CSI stuff and I should be listening to Pink. He is 60 years old !!! I guess the people at that flea market is just like my roommate,
The only instance of "the parts being worth more than the whole" that I know would be the breaking of old county land atlases. The audience for the whole large book is small, but the individual county or township maps can be sold for $5 or more.
Cutting the listings out of a TV Guide is absurd. An individual issue isn't that big to be of concern. Seems like someone's misguided attempt to conserve storage space at the risk of reducing their marketability. Maybe they can still sell the abridged copies for the same price, but it will take them twice as long to clear their inventory.

I'd very politely tell him to go fly a kite-- after all, you're not trying to make him like what you like, so why should he try to make you like what he likes? If you were trying to force your likes/dislikes on him, I could see him being how he is; you're not doing that, however, so he is being incredibly unreasonable, at least IMO.
And about the TV Guides, I solicited the opinion of an experienced Ebay seller who has an early Elvis (Philadelphia) issue for sale ($400):

With or without listings, paying for an old TV Guide seems insane to me. And I once worked there.
That is insane, to remove the local listings from old TV Guides. Though I imagine it would be harder to do with the later, glue-bound issues. (When I was a kid and my dad would get the new issue every week, he would always pull out the ads that were in the middle and printed on cardboard. Then he would do the crossword puzzle.)
I'm not very fond of the eBay sellers who cut up old magazines and sell the ads and covers separately. I'd rather have the entire magazine.

I got a TV Guide once from the Washington-Baltimore market, it was from 1986 and several pages of the listings were missing. Entire primetime listings were missing. Thankfully I got a refund from it. Several more issues were just like that, and the seller didn't even notice until it was too late!

There's people who will sell just the cover of a Norman Rockwell issue of the 'Post'. And yes, TV Guides with just the articles, but it doesn't happen often.

At least you got a refund. About 30 years old there was a company called TV Guide Specialists. Anyway I contacted them to get a February 1968 Baltimore/Washington edition. Anyway what I got was the New Orleans edition and several pages were inked out with a magic market and others has shows circled with the words "sucks" and "this bites the big one". I think the guy who had this business had mental issues as I wrote for a refund and I got a letter back from this guy telling me I should listen to the Beatles"...as the words were spoken....Strawberry Fields....Forever !!". The letter I received made no sense and no I never did get a refund.
Buying a TV Guide without the local listings is like buying a defective product.
