Old WCKW Garyville tower demolition

Thanks for posting the video!

Here's a little early WCKW history prior to classic rock, some of it I knew personally, some of it from talking to Sid Levet III in the 1970's and early 80's:

The demolished tower was 320', and was the original FM tower used at sign on in January 1966 for the FM (56KW ERP). When the AM signed on in December 1970, the same tower was used, the AM antenna being a folded dipole design. Then in 1976, the 500' tower standing next to the one in the video was erected, and the FM antenna was put there ( I got to witness some of the construction). In the fall of 1981, the FM went to 100KW ERP. I don't recall exactly, but I believe the Vacherie 2000' site was erected in late 1987, shared with then KHOM, Houma.
Boy, those were different days!
Back in the 70's, the two stations simulcast most of the time as "River Parish Radio", with a split format consisting of a mix of pop/MOR and 50-60's oldies during the day, and at 5PM it was country and swamp pop, very heavy on requests and dedications. A 30 second spot cost 3-4 dollars as I recall, 60's were like 5 or 6 bucks! We used the Marti all the time for remotes and high school football games. ABC News followed by local newscasts could be heard "every hour on the hour".

Whatever happened to WCKW?

That's where I had my very first radio "job". I read the high school news report every afternoon back in 1984. I'm an East St. John alum.

They call it WDVW now. It's was known as The Diva from 2004-2007. It's still Adult Top 40, though. :)
