I was hired at FXW in Dec. 83',right as Howard Miller was leaving. Mr. Gerald Gamel hired me on as a staff announcer and had me do an 'Earlybird Show' from 5am-6:30am.This was my 1st radio gig,and I enjoyed getting all the experience that goes along w/ being a 'new guy'.
The show had extreme emphasis on agriculture w/reports,weekly grain/futures etc.(I think Mr. Gamel wanted to compete with WGN's Orion Samualson and that type of info)
I had a gut feel that absolutely no one was listening to that type of programming, but I stuck it out and stayed at WFXW for 2 1/2 yrs.(at that point I was doing mid-days.) and an lite/contemporary format.
Other staff I've worked w/at FXW were Michael Baptist,(PD) Bill Martin(sports),Robin Lange,Bob Berkeneder,Joy Wagner,Les Hodge (sports Saturday mornings) Linda Girardi (news)
I really enjoyed those 'formative' radio yrs. at WFXW,I learned the basics and complex parts of the business. Many good times.
