Old WHMA Alabama 100.5

I can remember listening to Alabama 100 quite a bit during the late 80s and early 90s...I was in my 20s at the time. I lived up on Shades Mtn back then, and WHMA put a fairly good signal into that area I also remember the first day WHMA went country, back in '85. I also used to listen to WHMA when they were a beautiful music station, too. It all seems like forever ago...

btw, I have a short, 5 second Alabama 100 station ID I recorded years ago. If you don't have one already and are interested, email me at my station website in my signature line below, and I'll send you a link to download it. I am not sure if the emails and PMs here on the forum are still operable since Radio-Info was split off from the message boards.

Remember it? Yes I do. I remember working the 10p-2a airshift as a teenager and discovering the stack of Penthouse magazines that were hidden in the ceiling tiles above the control board.

I worked with some amazingly talented people there like Tony Randal (Tony & Kris Show that dominated San Diego), Sheila Burgess (worked as Jill Friday at Magic 96), Jack Steele (went to WZZK, now handles production at Clear Channel in Bham) and several others that are not as well known but just as talented. Tommy Lee was the PD back then. Now he runs one of the best small market operations in Alabama. It was a great way to get started in radio. Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Another great memory from Alabama 100 was the Garth Brooks concert. We had just started playing his first single and it was only in the night rotation so I was almost the only DJ playing it. He came to the Alabama Show Palace and I went down with Jack Steele (he was using a different name back then) but they wouldn't let us in because I was under 21. There were 12 people at the show. He talked about it later on The Tonight Show and called them the Anniston Dozen. Coulda been 14. Jack was a good friend and left with me. I hate that he missed it because of me.

I wasn't a country person but I remember the station having a massive signal that reached at least parts of Birmingham and Atlanta. It was one of a number of "high power, small town" FMs around Birmingham, along with 103.7 in Gadsden, 101.1 in Cullman and 102.5 in Jasper.

My personal favorite memories come from the 90's, but my family has told me many times of listening to Tommy Lee and other's from earlier years. I am a big coutnry music fan so I listened to this station alot and even used to make Cassette Tapes of some of my favorite songs. When school was out for summer I would alaways play along with Lorie Byrd's "What's Cooking" and the contest that Dee Allen had at night where he would play a T.V Show theme song and you had to name 5 characters in 5 seconds. Also the "Saturday Morning Cartoon Classics" Classic Country show and the top 8 at 8:00 at night. I was listening the day they signed off the air, and I might be wrong but I think the last song was "Goodbye Says It All" by Blackhawk. I'm surprised that I remember all that. I wish that more stations would have a live on air DJ later into the night like Alabama 100 did.
