Old WWLI article from R&R Magazine

I was looking through some old R&R Magazine issues, and I found one from 11/30/90, and it features a very nice article about WWLI being #1, competition with WSNE (which seemed to rarely appear in R&R magazine), and even a sample hour. Looking at the sample hour, it actually sounded very similar to how it did in 1997 when I first started listening regularly, and similar to how Easy 99.1 sounds now. This article brings back a lot of memories of the station, and when I was younger. It even mentioned Gary DeGraide, and it got me thinking about how the station actually sounds very feminine now. And a lot of people don't realize this, but I'm pretty sure WSNE was the first Providence station to play all Christmas music. I think there were a few years when WSNE played all Christmas music, and WWLI didn't. Anyway, here's a link to the magazine. The article is on Page 47.

So you're probably saying, this is a Providence station, so why is it on the Boston board? Well, I did post this same topic on the Providence board but nobody responded to it, in fact it seems like hardly anyone ever posts there anymore. But also, I've always lived in the Boston area and I listened to this station regularly. And part of the reason why I preferred WWLI to WMJX or WSRS is because they seemed to still be a soft AC station at the time, which Boston didn't really have anymore at that point since WSSH changed formats in 1995. I even remember calling into Nite Lite, the old loves songs show with Art Spencer to make a request, and he mentioned my name on the air and where I'm from, and he was pleasantly surprised to know they have a regular listener from so far away.

From a former Rhode Islander, glad you posted this here, since WWLI, I believe, shows up in the Boston 6+ ratings.

When I return to RI to visit family or for vacation, my favorite is News/talk WPRO-AM 630, a Cumulus station, as is WWLI, which does well.
