Old WXRT/WSCR Building

Structurally, what's going on with the old 4949 W Belmont building? Lots of cracks on the front facade. One (about two thirds of the way up) seems to extend almost the entire length of the building. I realize it's now just a backup site, but I wonder if the rest of the building inside is deteriorating like the front facade is?

It's fine until all of the front facade bricks are laying on the sidewalk and in the street. Those cracks and gaps shouldn't be there if the building was being maintained correctly. There's obviously some settling that's been taking place over the years, but no one seems to be taking any action on it. Hopefully the tower is getting the attention/inspections it needs every once in awhile.

Those cracks have been there at least since the 2000s. I'm sure the structure is sound.

The tower is actually on the top of the building, so there is going to be some settling over time.

If there were any problems, I doubt they would risk it unless they have good insurance and don't care, but then again that's their Aux site there. It's on the air once a week or so. They need it. 820's skirt looks like it's still there, but that signal started diplexing with WSBC years back

Is there anything going on inside that building?

It's a transmitter site. 93.1, 96.3, 99.5, 104.3 and 105.9 have backup transmitters on the tower. They are in both analog and HD and usually run once a week or have been when the Sears Tower shuts down overnight for tech work, usually overnights on Thursday. They are also on the air when any antenna work is being done on the Sears Tower, or whenever they need to be used. When the Sears Tower lost power, that facility kept the stations on the air. WXRT's main is on the Hancock but they also have an Aux facility on the tower

1240 used to be there, but it now diplexes with 820's day site.
