The oldest thing taped off air is all the WKRP episodes, when ch. 3 WSTM in Syracuse ran them at 5:30PM in 1984 or so. I inherited those tapes from my cousin. That batch also came with NBC's 60th anniversary from 1986. They include "newsbreaks" with Tom Miller, who went on to anchor the old NBC overnight news service in the early 90's (under the name Tom Donavan). He's still anchoring somewhere. Anyway.

I've never asked my brother how old his tapes are -- he bought a VHS recorder in 1978, and I know his wife went crazy recording things!

BTW: anyone know how I can get my hands on NBC's 50th anniversary special from 1976 -- all 4.5 hours of it?
I hope you still have those tapes. WKRP was syndicated by Victory Television (I remember watching them as a little kid in the 80s on Ch 5 New York). If you get a chance, can you please post those Syracuse commercials on YouTube.

These are some great finds lately, Chandler. Older Judge Judy, first-run '80s sitcoms, those Thanksgiving cartoon specials, Comic Strip Live which I have *never* found, and the pilot movie for the Chip 'n Dale cartoon. Not every VHS will be a winner (how many rental duds have I found lately?) but some turn out to be GEMS.

Latest finds from the past couple of months. I am too busy to go through them all at once, but thankfully it's summer vacation time now, and subbing has dwindled down to nothing, so if I am not doing DoorDash/UberEats, I have more time. Unfortunately, my trusty capture box that I've had since 2018 seems to have bit the dust. Nothing but green and purple reversed colors on the pictures now, no VCR 'blue screen'...entirely green. So I can't go through tapes for a few days until a new capture box comes to me (a Hauppauge one).

4/12/24 - Major yard sale in Yakima, tapes out of storage units, there were a couple dozen more I didn't pick up. This list is not complete.
Tape 1 - 'Campus Man' (1987) taped off Showtime circa 1989; 'North to Alaska' (1960) taped off KCPQ-13 on 6/24/1990 with commercials; One to One: Bee Gees: Tales from the Brothers Gibb taped off VH1 in February 1991 with commercials; partial broadcast of L.A. Law taped off KHQ/NBC on 4/4/1991 with commercials and an NBC News Special Report on a hostage situation in Sacramento; first few minutes of the 4/9/1991 episode of All My Children taped off KXLY/ABC with one commercial break; ends with the complete 4/12/91 episode of All My Children taped off KXLY/ABC with commercials. BASF T-120
Tape 2 - 'Is There Life Out There?' (1994) taped off KREM/CBS on 10/9/1994 with commercials (INCOMPLETE...I haven't looked at the rest of this tape yet, but I know it has All My Children and other various 1994 programming afterwards.)
Tape 3 - 'French Kiss' (1995) and 'Sabrina' (1995) taped off HBO circa late 1996; 'Broken Arrow' (1996) taped off HBO on 1/4/1997 with promos; last few minutes of 'Dallas: JR Returns' (1996) taped off (assumed) KEPR/CBS on 11/15/1996 with a few commercials; ends with a brief clip of SportsCenter taped off ESPN circa June 1996. TDK T-120
Tape 4 - 'Tin Cup' (1998) taped off unknown pay-TV channel circa 2000; episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway? taped off KVEW/ABC on 3/9 and 3/16/2000 with commercials; brief clip from another Whose Line Is It Anyway? taped off (presumed) KVEW/ABC in April 2000; partial episode of Law & Order taped off KNDU/NBC on 3/16/2000 with commercials; final moments of the USC win over Washington State and InSport taped off KOMO-4 on 9/30/1989 with commercials. BASF T-120

Law and Law & Order taped off A&E on 7/13/2000 with commercials; ends with part of All My Children taped off KATU/ABC on 7/14/2000 with commercials. Sony T-120
There are at least 4 more tapes out in storage, one has a Bulls game, another with Amazing Stories on the label, and I believe there's another tape with the 2002 Winter Olympics figure skating finals on it (probably via KNDU or KGW).

4/13 - One tape at a huge digger's/picker's sale out on Ahtanum Rd in Yakima. A tool lover's dream. Many people wore gloves as did I. Dust everywhere.
Tape 1 - Episode of Outlaws & Lawmen (on Wild Bill Hickok), The Next Step, Beyond 2000 and part of Wild Discovery taped off Discovery Channel on 4/8/1996 with commercials. Memorex T-120, Hi-Fi, blank after 2:30

CBS released an official tape of highlights through Fox Video as well. Scotch T-120

5/25 - Major yard sale, Memorial Day Weekend, near Trout Lodge in Rimrock. A pretty drive to get to this one, about 40 minutes outside of Yakima. I still have a couple more to check - one with an ESPN Classic rebroadcast of a bowl game, and another has a VH1 aircheck on it from 1990 or 1991, both w/ commercials.

Tape 1 - S-VHS - Episode of Ally McBeal taped off Foxnet on 2/8/1999 with commercials (generic Fox IDs and a promo for the Fox Report 'at 10 ET' gave it away - only my 2nd find from the national service); NYPD Blue taped off KOMO/ABC on 2/16/1999 and 2/23/1999 with commercials; an hour of some John Wayne movie follows from AMC; cuts to another episode of Ally McBeal taped off Foxnet on 2/22/1999 with commercials; part of the 41st Annual Grammy Awards taped off the WSEE/CBS satellite feed on 2/24/1999 with commercials (direct-response during local breaks); episode of NYPD Blue taped off WABC/ABC on 3/3/1999 with commercials; part of Asteroid Part 1 taped off Sci-Fi Channel on 12/1/1998 with commercials. Maxell T-180 in EP, 9 hours.
Tape 2 - Starts with a couple of strange recordings: some documentary of how the Federal Reserve has 'duped the public' since the days of Woodrow Wilson (copied from another tape), and another feature from Portland (OR) Cable Access against public education and for Christian/homeschooling education; followed by about 40 minutes of some porno film taped off Playboy TV in February 1994 with a 900 number ad and 3AM PT sign-off (sounds like this taper is a sinner!); NYPD Blue taped off KATU/ABC on 2/8/1994 with commercials; clip of KGW News 8 at 11 taped 2/8/1994 (top story: Tonya Harding leaves for the Olympics); Perry Mason and most of Matlock taped off KPTV-12 on 2/9/1994 with commercials (15 minutes of Matlock taped over with a clip of another Playboy porno - 'Sex Under Glass'). Tape 4 - Star Trek: The Next Generation repeat taped off KWBP-32 on 6/4/1998 with commercials; a couple of telecourses follow from Portland Community College's educational access channel, the latter telecourse has no audio (and they never fixed the problem), one from 6/4/1998 and the other from likely 6/2/1998, both end with long recordings of the rolling PCC bulletin board with audio from K103, KKCW Portland; Star Trek: The Next Generation repeat and first 3-4 minutes of Real Stories of the Highway Patrol taped off KWBP-32 on 6/1/1998 with commercials. Maxell T-120 dating back into the mid-1980s

Maxell T-120
Tape 7 - (S-VHS) - Multiple episodes of Brimstone taped off Sci-Fi Channel in December 1999 with commercials. Maxell T-120

6/1 - More tapes from Moxee, during the community yard sale. One estate sale as well, about 7 miles out of town near the Dairy.

Tape 5 - Hispanics Today and syndicated broadcast of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (1968) taped off KAPP-35 on 11/30/2003 with commercials. Fuji T-120

as well as one more tape from June 2nd's big Fairgrounds Yard Sale. Dozens of vendors.
Tape 6 - 'The Crew' (2000) copied from rental tape; part of 'Doctor Dolittle' (1998) taped off KAPP/ABC on 2/10/2001 with commercials; Survivor: Australian Outback taped off KIMA/CBS on 2/15/2001 with commercials; part of 'Under Siege' (1992) and 19 minutes of KIMA News Weekend Edition taped off KIMA/CBS on 9/10/2000 with commercials. TDK T-120
There were four duds / all rental copies. Many more that I didn't pick up, and they also screamed 'rental dubs' - a typed label with the VHS cover art labeled on the front of the cassette. Also, a lovely XXX tape that I didn't pick up.

6/8 - More tapes from two estate sales. One in Yakima, and one in Wapato.

YAKIMA
Tape 1 - Laugh-In's 25th Anniversary Special and part of Weekend Travel Update taped off KNDO/NBC on 2/7/1993 with commercials, unfortunately no audio the entire time; part of 'Heartbreak Ridge' (1986) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; part of Gambler, 'Cry-Baby' (1990) and part of 'Idiot's Delight' (1939) taped off Showtime on 3/28/1992 with tons of promos. Maxell T-120
Tape 2 - Mazda Gator Bowl (Georgia vs. Michigan State) taped off ESPN on 1/2/1989 with commercials. Universal T-120, hard to play at times especially at the beginning. No sticky-shed, just keeps shutting off like it's at the end of the tape.
Tape 3 - Episode of Twin Peaks and part of Action News 11PM Update taped off WXYZ-7 Detroit/ABC on 11/17/1990 with commercials; part of Falcon Crest taped off WJBK/CBS on 3/9/1990 with commercials. SKC T-120, SP
Tape 4 - 'French Kiss' (1995) taped off pay-per-view; 'Circle of Friends' (1995) taped off Viewer's Choice PPV on 11/13/1995 with several minutes of promos afterwards, then it cuts to the Continental Cablevision PPV preview channel with more promos and bumpers there. Turns out this was from the Springfield, MA cable system. Maxell HGX T-120, Hi-Fi
There were also four Beta tapes here, a rarity for an estate sale. But all 4 were rental dubs, one of which had the opening previews as well.

WAPATO
Tape 5 - Edith Piaf: La Vie en Rose and Roy Orbison & Friends: A Black And White Night taped off KYVE/PBS on 6/6/1998 with multiple pledge breaks from KCTS hosted by George Ray. Sony T-120

You guys seem to be finding the most ironic combinations on a single tape in some of your latest finds--a public access program about Christian homeschooling followed by a Playboy TV movie, and Pannoni recently finding recordings of religious programs and adult movies in the same eBay lot from Philadelphia.

Recently at an estate sale in Bath Township (LeBron's old stomping grounds), I found several VHS recordings similar to the start of crainbebo's second tape from Rimrock, conservative/Christian "educational" videos copied from other tapes. One of them was titled "Hollywood vs. Catholicism," which was basically a 60-minute compilation and analysis of scenes from major motion pictures that were perceived to be anti-Catholic or anti-Christian. The only recordings I found from this particular haul that I personally found worthwhile were a couple of old black-and-white movies taped from TCM circa 2006.

Meanwhile, I'm in the middle of a VHS overload in general because I still have a HUGE backlog of content to get onto YouTube from estate sales going back the last couple of months. It also doesn't help that one of my accounts is now on a daily upload limit, so I can only upload so many videos within a 24-hour period, although that limited number of uploads seems to vary from one day to the next.

On top of that, a co-worker of mine at the radio station I work at, who happens to be a long-time subscriber of mine on YouTube, generously gifted me a HUGE load of VHS tapes that were given to him by a co-worker of his at his second job. He opted to pass them along to me knowing that I'd be putting them to good use. Thus far, I've largely been finding baseball and football games, Gilmore Girls and some other shows from The WB and some other random odds and ends. Most recent content I've found here thus far is from 2007 (Ohio State losing horribly to Florida in the BCS Championship) and the oldest I've found so far is from 1989, and the latter was actually a tape of various shows recorded from local stations in Denver, including a rather timely find, a partial episode of The Pat Sajak Show taped from KMGH on April 20, 1989 (insert Colorado joke here). Heather Locklear was one of the guests on this episode. Here in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton market, WJW opted not to air The Pat Sajak Show in favor of airing Newhart at 11:30 PM, St. Elsewhere at midnight and Arsenio Hall at 1AM. The show instead was picked up by formerly independent WOAC in Canton, which, as you can imagine, likely made for low viewership for the show in that market.

More details on my finds from this generous donation later. Another estate sale in Parma last week yielded more tapes as well, mostly movie titles on the labels. And one recorded tape of The Lion King (supposedly) from another sale in Barberton last weekend.

That daily upload limit (10 I think) applied to the AVTB channel that I am a co-creator on (ever since I lost my YouTube channels in 2021), for several *MONTHS* before it went away. It sucked!! No copyright strikes caused it or Community Guidelines violations.

I know I will be getting even more busier as time goes on, now that I am moving to Idaho in late July and working as a 5th grade teacher as of late August. Between lesson planning, grading, and whatnot, the time I spend on tapes could be abysmal in the fall.

A couple more tapes found today at an estate sale out in West Valley. Three tapes with two keepers:
Tape 1 - Part of 5 O'Clock Live, CBS Evening News and KIMA News at 6 taped off KIMA-29 on 5/6/1997 with commercials. Gemini T-120
Tape 2 - 48 Hours episode taped off KIMA/CBS on 12/22/1993 with commercials (Ready for Love, on developmentally-disabled women who want to be mothers); there's another recording that shows up afterwards, I think a news special from CBS, but the signal is very weak - almost no video, very noisy audio. TDK T-120

NOTE: I am off to Montana and Idaho between 6/27 and 7/2. Like last year, I am trying my luck at the Sanders County and Bitterroot 50 Mile Yard Sales, then after a hike on Sunday, will be driving down to Idaho to sign my contract for said 5th grade teaching job, take a tour of my new classroom and meet with the superintendent. Then I leave Yakima for good, 4 weeks later.
I am moving into rural mountainous Idaho, but will be in the Boise market. Any new VHS finds will be extremely limited in late 2024 and probably much of 2025 as Boise is still an hour + drive away. That will give me (hopefully!) some extra time to digitize tapes that I purchased in 2020-2022 that haven't been finished yet, which number in the hundreds. I could abstain from estate sales throughout the entire year of 2025 and still have new material to post from previous lots. Maybe it's time to just go through what I have :)

Crainbebo, Thats a funny coincidence that you found the exact SAME airing of Mr. Mom, just on another affiliate. I'd honestly be interested if you would digitize the first 30-35 minutes of that airing so I could later edit that into the airing I have to make it complete. The quality would be pretty outstanding on it as the majority of it would be at SP recording speed.

I just checked a lot of ten Betas from an eBay seller after about ten lots had sold quickly after being posted. Before I get to my lot, some of the labels on those sold lots included titles ranging from "Star Trek NG", Family Ties, Sammy Davis Jr's 60th Anniversary Celebration, The Partridge Family (likely old syndie reruns), Firefox, "George Washington April 1984" (the miniseries), "Lake Placid" (possibly 1980 Winter Olympics recordings?), The Cosby Show, In The Heat Of The Night, 3-2-1 Contact, Cheers, Cagney & Lacey, "Bears-Detroit 9/24/89", Facts Of Life, "Tom Cruise on Oprah Winfrey Show", "Baywatch 5/93", and Growing Pains. The seller was based in the Milwaukee area, but all recordings were off of stations recorded off that even bigger city down Lake Michigan, as evidenced by an address label on one of those lots as being from Chicago Heights.

Now back to my lot, which on the eBay photo had the word "General Hospital" on what turned out to be a vintage shoebox. Except for a single tape, every tape featured various Luke & Laura scenes. Most were just excerpts, but there were some partial/full episodes with a varying degree of commercials. I did have to throw away two Ampex tapes due to their notorious nature of ruining machines, and one of the old Scotch tapes (with the pre-1980 font) required me to use my head cleaner a couple times. Two more tapes were in the pass file due to containing just Luke & Laura scenes and almost no commercials, say for the odd promo. But I did keep the following six:

TAPE 1: About 2 1/2 hours worth of General Hospital off WLS/ABC circa July/August 1980 with one commercial break intact as well as a promo for the All-Star Family Feud Special. 1980 Scotch L-500, alternating between BII and BIII.

TAPE 2: Most of General Hospital from 9/2/1980 off WLS/ABC with some commercials, followed by about three hours worth of Luke & Laura scenes circa September 1980 with no commercials, save for a single promo, followed by a clip of Good Morning America from 10/27/1980, featuring an interview of one of daytime's hottest stars. First generation Sony L-750, mostly in BIII.

TAPE 3: Most of another episode of GH from 9/26/1980 off WLS/ABC with most commercials, followed by another three hours of various Luke & Laura scenes circa September/October 1980 off WLS/ABC with no commercials, save for a couple promos. 1980 Scotch L-750 in mostly BIII

TAPE 4: Most of GH from 12/11/1980 with some commercials, followed by another 2 1/2 hours of mostly Luke & Laura scenes from GH from December 1980 with no commercials, ending with the New Year's Eve episode. 1980 Scotch L-750 alternating between BII and BIII

TAPE 5: Starts with around an hour of various Luke & Laura scenes off GH off WLS/ABC circa February 1981 with no commercials, followed by AM Chicago from February 1981 featuring Anthony Geary (Luke), followed by about two-thirds of GH from 2/23/1981 with some commercials, then it wraps up with about another hour of Luke & Laura scenes off GH circa late February/March 1981 with no commercials, except for the odd promo. 1979 Scotch L-500 mostly in BIII

TAPE 6: First off, "L.ALAW" was faintly visible on the front, and as it turns out, it was a goodies. Features of episodes of NBC's then-new cop drama from 10/24, 10/31, and 11/7/1986 with commercials (missing the closing on the first two episodes, and missing the first segment on the third), with the later episode also including about half of the WMAQ 10 PM News, before cutting back to about the last five minutes of One Life To Live, General Hospital, True Confessions, and the first few minutes of Jeopardy! off WLS/ABC on 11/6/1986 with commercials. Mid-80s Sony L750 in BIII mode. That episode of True Confessions was a nice surprise as that soap only lasted a single season, and I never even knew about it until I received a different episode in a trade last month.

Speaking of Oprah, my next lot, this time with VHS tapes taken from an owner who lived in the same house for 60 years will be coming soon, and the eBay lot had three labels with Oprah visible. Details were probably be posted next weekend.

Still, to those who purchased those joe-6 lots, expect a good chance of some nice network finds from the mid-late '80s to early '90s with the commercials present based on that tape with 1986 content that I had just found. I'd wish my lot had more complete episodes, but you can't complain much when you find a soap that even teen-oriented magazines featured reports about it!

eBay VHS lots are still being sold? I thought eBay purged all the blank VHS and Betamax lots. I can't sell any tapes on that site anymore except for retail. They get pulled down for piracy concerns - and I believe the old sold as blank 'loophole' has closed for good. Now sending my lots to a site that starts with the letters "Merc".

Four tapes (three keepers) found in Tieton WA yesterday at a moving sale. Lots of antiques, comics, huge collection of Native American figurines and Asian collectibles too.

Tape 1 - 'A Place Called Home' (2004) taped off Hallmark Channel on 3/7/2004 with commercials. TDK Vivid T-120 in SP
Tape 2 - Donny & Marie episode with the entire Osmond family, taped off KIMA-29 on Christmas Eve 1999 with commercials; 'Miracle on the 17th Green' (1999) taped off KIMA/CBS on 12/19/1999 with commercials. TDK Vivid T-120
Tape 3 - Both parts of Christianity: The Second Millennium and first 25 minutes of 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' (1957) taped off A&E on 12/17 and 12/18/2000 with commercials; part of 'Jesus' (2000) taped off KIMA/CBS on 5/17/2000 with commercials, and I already have this broadcast; part of 'The Marriage Fool' (1998) taped off KIMA/CBS on 12/26/1999 with commercials. Unknown T-120, taped over 6-8 times at least.

It's a double dose of more great finds in what's shaping up to be one of my best years since 2019 so far in terms of overall finds after hunting not one, but two lots over the last few days. This includes not just that aforementioned eBay lot, but also my first tape lot from that m-initialed site mentioned on the post above. Keep in mind though since around the time of that last post, there were a few takedowns from eBay, including one seller (matchane_nrg) that had a bunch of labels with Saturday Night Live from the late '70s/early '80s, although another one of his/her lots did manage to avoid the axe.

The first tape lot, from a seller about 15 miles east of Rochester, NY, was chock full of "let it run" finds from the '90s and very early '00s. Just two rental duds were found out of 25, along with five tapes that were placed in the sell pile including one tape with seven episodes of the Saban-produced HBO children's series "Tales Of The Little Women" from the fall of 1988, including several minutes of promos at the end. The closings were missing from all but every episode. Other passers included a 2000 broadcast of the 1987 film Moonstruck off TNT with ads, You've Got Mail (1998) off TNT on 6/10/2001 with commercials, and a couple of "let 'em runs" off WHEC/NBC in 2001, one of them including a rerun of the 2000 election episode of SNL from 6/23/2001, and other including the 200th episode of Frasier from 11/13/2001. All content in this lot contains the commercials intact and was recorded in SLP/EP mode unless otherwise indicated. Now for the finds:

TAPE 1: A rerun of a 1988 episode of Donahue taped off WSTM in summer 1989 with commercials. SP mode

TAPE 2: The CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie "Sarah, Plain and Tall", the WROC 11 PM News, Big Break (Star Search clone hosted by Natalie Cole with The Pointer Sisters this week's guests), and about 90 minutes with televangelist Dr. Gene Scott prior to the sign-off on 2/3/1991. I've previously found a few short clips of the opening segment of Big Break in that massive 2019 lot with all those Star Searches, but this is my first complete find to this hard-to-find talent competition show.

TAPE 3: The NBC Monday Night movie premiere presentation of The Story Lady, the WHEC 11 PM News, network reruns of The Tonight Show and Late Night With David Letterman, Later with Bob Costas, a rebroadcast of the WHEC 11 PM News, a half hour portion of NBC News Nightside, and the first few minutes of a "Success In Life" infomercial off WHEC on 12/9/1991.

TAPE 4: The ABC Sunday Night Movie "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988) off WOKR, about half of an episode of General Hospital from spring 1993 off WOKR/ABC, followed about the last hour of the ABC Special movie "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977) off WOKR on 1/17/1993. A Fish Called Wanda in SLP mode, the rest in SP.

TAPE 5: Oprah Winfrey and the first few minutes of the WHEC 5 PM News from 2/17/1993.

TAPE 6: Adam's Rib (1949) and Pat and Mike (1952) along with a vintage Studio Visit short about MGM Studios (today's Sony lot) along with about 90 minutes of TNT's Really Big Toon Show from 1/25/1993. If it weren't for those classic cartoons and local inserts, I probably would have passed on this one.

TAPE 7: About three-fourths of the Today show (from Independence Mall in Philly) off WHEC/NBC on 7/4/1993 with some commercials and two newsbreaks, followed by about the last half hour of an unknown movie off WUHF with a few commercials.

TAPE 8: A Waltons Thanksgiving Celebration along with the first few minutes of the WROC 11 PM News off WROC/CBS on 11/21/1993, then it cuts back to about the last 85 minutes of "A Country Music Celebration" off WROC/CBS on 2/6/1993, then it cuts to a syndicated Ed Sullivan Show "best of" episode along with The Oriental Beauty Collection infomercial off WROC circa early 1993.

TAPE 9: The Hallmark Hall of Fame movie presentation of "Skylark" (the sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall), the WROC 11 PM News, Spotlight (a show that would belong on The Travel Channel with lots of ads for various hospitality businesses), the CBS Sunday Night News, about 70 minutes from Dr. Gene Scott (that televangelist again), the "Incredible Inventions" infomercial, and another sign-off from 2/7/1993.

TAPE 10: The Hallmark Hall of Fame movie "To Dance With The White Dog", the WTVH 11 PM News, a syndicated rerun of Cheers, Inside Edition Weekend, Comedy Showcase, Firefighters, and the first few minutes of CBS Up To The Minute from 12/5/1993. Unfortunately, the video quality (from Fay's Drug Stores of Liverpool, NY) goes downhill quickly near the end of the movie and by the end of the late newscast, the video quality is very snowy, which is unfortunate since that Firefighters episode has an inside look inside the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

TAPE 11: Most of Oprah Winfrey off WIXT on 1/11/1994, followed by part of Columbo: Butterfly In Shades, the WOKR 11 PM News, a syndie rerun of Murphy Brown, Nightline, Hard Copy, Rush Limbaugh, The Jerry Springer Show (my earliest complete episode at a time that the show wasn't quite the bleepfest that it would become a year or so later), followed by a sign-off on 1/10/1994.

TAPE 12: The ABC Monday Night Movie presentation of Look Who's Talking (1989) off WOKR on 2/13/1994, followed by Look Who's Talking Too (1990) along with the first several minutes of the late news off WOKR/ABC on 2/21/1994, then it jumps back for Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Karr's Acne Statin infomercial, another episode of Jerry Springer, and another sign-off from WOKR on 2/13/1994.

TAPE 13: The CBS Sunday Movie premiere presentation of This Can't Be Love, the WROC 11 O'Clock News, another episode of Spotlight (that show with the travel stuff), the CBS Sunday Night News, Mystic Scoop (a music video-type show co-hosted by a young Kelly Ripa), and sign-off from 3/13/1994.

TAPE 14: Most of Oprah Winfrey, the WHEC 5 PM News, Inside Edition, the WHEC 6 PM News, NBC Nightly News (from Normandy for the semicentennial of D-Day), American Journal, a syndicated rerun of Cheers, summer network reruns of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Blossom, and about half of the 1992 TV movie A Child Lost Forever off WHEC/NBC on 6/6/1994.

TAPE 15: Oprah Winfrey, the WHEC 5 PM News, Inside Edition, the WHEC 6 PM News, and the first few minutes of NBC Nightly News from 7/21/1995, followed by most of the WSTM 11 PM News, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Later with Greg Kinnear, and The Dennis Prager Show off WSTM/NBC on 7/18/1995.

TAPE 16: Starts with an episode of Oprah Winfrey off WROC on 1/25/1999, followed by another episode of Oprah, the WROC 5 PM News, REAL TV, the WROC 6 PM News, The CBS Evening News, Wheel of Fortune (an NFL Players Week episode), Jeopardy!, and about half of the CBS Tuesday Move The Shawshant Redemption (1994) off WROC/CBS on 1/26/1999.

TAPE 17: Begins with one more episode of Oprah off WROC on 8/11/1999, followed by syndicated reruns of Matlock and Hunter of TBS circa August 1999, followed by most Emeril Live off the Food Network circa August 1999, followed by over two hours of QVC footage (Founder's Day edition) circa August/September 1999.

Details from that second lot coming soon!

My second lot is my first purchase from that "other" selling service that crainbebo hinted at above. Unlike eBay or Craigslist, only the state is given for the seller's location, so you never quite know which market it could potentially fall in, plus there's a little buyer fee that you won't find on eBay. As it turned out, this seller was from just outside of Reading, PA, meaning that as you may expect, most recordings were from the Philadelphia market, although one tape contained footage from Lancaster's lone station. Once again, most recordings are in EP mode with commercials unless otherwise indicated.

TAPE 1: Starts with the 1988 Winston off WPVI/ABC on 5/22/1988 (short version of The Winston 500 earlier in the season), then it jumps over to the 1990 Winston, WPVI Action News at 6, ABC World News Today, and most of Life Goes On off WPVI/ABC on 5/20/1990.

TAPE 2: A series of The Busch Clash races to kick off each NASCAR season in early February from 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 off WCAU/CBS with commercials on every edition except for 1992 where just a few are present, a clip from KYW's PM Magazine from 1988 on Jontue's "What is sexy?" ad campaign, followed by most of the 1988 San Marino GP from 5/1/1988 off ESPN, followed by about the lash half hour of the Talladega 500 off WCAU/CBS on 7/31/1988.

TAPE 3: The ARCA Stock Car Series race, Winston 500, and about an hour of final round coverage of the Senior PGA Open from Las Vegas, all recorded off ESPN on 5/2/1993.

TAPE 4: The 1986 Daytona 500 and about the first 15 minutes of an NBA game between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers off WCAU on 2/16/1986. LP mode (too bad, this was the '80s ultimate NBA rivalry at its peak and the commentators stated that it was the toughest ticket in town for a regular season game at The Forum)

TAPE 5: The 1986 Winston 500 off ESPN on 5/4/1986, followed by about the last four minutes of the Trans South 500 and about the first ten minutes of Sportslook off ESPN on 4/13/1986.

TAPE 6: Starts with an hour of the 2nd Annual CoreStates Cycling Championship off WCAU on 6/15/1986, followed by the Michigan 400 off WCAU/CBS from the same afternoon, then it jumps back for the last 90 minutes of the same cycling championship live from Philly off WCAU on 6/15/1986. You probably won't find this in Marion Stokes' vault!

TAPE 7: Kicks off with ESPN's coverage of the Champion Sparkplug 400 from 8/17/1986, followed by part of The Atlanta Invitational (NASCAR second division race) and The Winston off ESPN on 5/11/1986.

TAPE 8: CBS Sports coverage of The 1986 Talladega 500 and about the first 25 minutes worth of coverage of the PGA's Buick Open off WCAU on 7/27/1986, followed by about the last 30 minutes of NBC's presentation of The Sound Of Music (1965) and about the first ten minutes of the WGAL 11 PM News from 3/28/1986.

TAPE 9: The 1987 Budweiser 500 off ESPN on 5/31/1987, followed by about the last 20 minutes of Days of our Lives off an unknown NBC station (either KYW or WGAL) from 5/18/1987. EP mode on the NASCAR race, SP mode on the soap opera.

TAPE 10: The 1987 Talladega 500 off WCAU/CBS on 7/26/1987.

TAPE 11: The 1987 Champion Sparkplug 400 off ESPN on 8/16/1987, followed by the ESPN Speedweek and about the first 15 minutes of Superbouts off ESPN on 1/13/1989.

TAPE 12: Most of ESPN Gameday (a SportsCenter-esque show) along with the 1988 Budweiser 500 off ESPN on 6/5/1988.

TAPE 13: The 1988 Delaware 500 and about the first 40 minutes of the Maryland Million off ESPN on 9/18/1988. Speaking of which, in 2017, my first ever Craigslist find involved a storage unit right across from Laurel Race Track, which included a mix of VHS and Beta tapes ranging from a 1983 Redskins-Cowboys NFL game with commercials along a bunch of soaps, local DC newscasts, and the Home show off ABC from the late 80s.

TAPE 14: Begins with a WCAU Speak-Out special featuring Philadelphia-area high school graduates of the class of 1989 from 6/25/1989, followed by CBS Sports coverage of the Miller High Life 400 from the same day, than it jumps for a partial episode of Finder's Keepers from May 1989 (a rerun of the syndicated version that begins during the Room Romp near the end of Round 1) and the first several minutes of You Can't Do That On Television off Nickelodeon with commercials, including promos for Think Fast, YCDTOTV, and Total Panic. The WCAU stuff was in EP, the Nick clip in SP. I'd wish it was a complete episode, but always nice to find Nickelodeon before my family got it on cale!

TAPE 15: The AC Spark Plug 500 NASCAR race along with part of the Agassi vs. Steeb semifinal Davis Cup tennis match (ends during the third set) off ESPN on 7/23/1989.

TAPE 16: ESPN's footage of the Auto Works 500 from 11/5/1989 (incomplete, begins around 40 laps in), followed by about two hours worth of coverage of what was supposed to be the final round of the PGA's Centel Classic that was rained out (mostly interviews and highlights from the third round), followed by by part of the J-Boat Championships off ESPN on 10/1/1989.

TAPE 17: The 1987 Winston 500 off ESPN on 5/3/1987, followed by about the last 35 minutes of part four of I'll Take Manhattan off WCAU/CBS on 3/4/1987.

The only tape from this lot that I placed in the "sell" pile was a recording of the 1987 Busch Clash and Daytona 500 that also included about ten minutes of a KYW newscast that's in the Stokes Vault, which I've already got off W*USA. Sure, many potential collectors tend to shy away a bit at NASCAR-related recordings on the labels, but then again, even though some of the commercials tend to be a bit repetitive, still yielded some unexpected surprises on some of the tapes, there were quite a few local Berks County inserts off the ESPN broadcasts, and for the 1986/early 1987 races, had a faster feel before the changes to the carburetors put an end to the 200+ MPH qualifying times. An people often forget that ESPN played a crucial role in broadening stock car racing to a wider audience (it's more than just a "southern" sport that many falsely accuse it to be, given that these were recorded above the Mason-Dixon Line). Well, with vacations coming up, I may be slowing down a little with new content, and may be selling some tapes a few weeks from now.

I'm in Montana right now and have a box out in the rental car with a good 30-40 blank tapes that I've found at various sales. A good 15 or so came from an estate sale at the Sanders County Fairgrounds in Plains MT. The old man said they were likely taped from "when she lived south of Portland" - so maybe Portland or Eugene TV footage, and maybe some Montana mixed in.

Next was six tapes from a sale to the east of Hamilton MT where the man had previously competed in several Iditarod races! Unfortunately, he wanted to keep much of the Iditarod tapes (plus another one with an episode of The Other Side, a short-lived NBC talk show about the paranormal), but I did get five home-recorded tapes and a professional tape produced by KYUK Radio in Bethel AK on another dog race over there. That's in the Kuskokwim River area 450 miles west of Anchorage - plane or boat is the only way to travel.

Two more tapes from a church sale in Hamilton, then 10? or 12? tapes from a sale in Stevensville, several marked with Star Trek, movies, or Little House on the Prairie. The homeowners used to live in Mount Vernon WA, so I doubt I'll get Missoula footage on these either - I can't get away from finding stuff from Seattle, I guess.

No VCR to check right now. Will check more when I return from Idaho on July 2nd.

Pannoni, that first lot you got reminds me of the time I went to a flea market/thrift store called the Hodge Podge Lodge in Rochester when I was on vacation in one of the lake towns nearby in the summer of 2012. That place was fully loaded with all kinds of media. Not bad finds overall from what I ended up getting, which didn't even scratch the surface of how many home-recorded VHS and Betamax tapes were sold there. I'm not sure that place is even in business anymore.

Here's a partial list of what I ended up finding from the tapes my co-worker at the radio station gave me. I'm still going through some more of them. All were recorded locally in Cleveland/Akron/Canton except for one that had recordings from Denver stations.

More to come as I go through them.

Nice mix of finds, especially the episodes of This Week in Baseball, and the Fox MLB games, and an older George Michael Sports Machine!
First tape I popped in the VCR from Montana was a Plains tape and yep, the old man was right, it's Heaven & Hell: North and South Book III from KATU Portland (nearly 400 miles away), commercials included. This is not a surprise. So many have escaped the west coast for a quieter life in ID and MT, that I shouldn't be surprised of any further recordings when I move to Idaho later this summer from the CA/OR/WA areas.

I just finished my latest lot of Beta tapes, this time from a seller just outside the Scranton, PA area. 24 tapes were found, 11 keepers, six outright duds (blanks, no promos such as a butchered recording of The Sound of Music), three tapes with just a few minutes of HBO/Cinemax promos, including one tape that featured scoped recordings of the final seven episodes of M*A*S*H from early 1983 with the intros and closings missing as well, a tape with six episodes of Star Trek taken from WVIA circa 1984 with a few funding sponsors after three of the episodes (first time I've found a PBS station airing Star Trek episodes), along with two tapes taken from Hazleton, PA city council meetings from April 1989 taken from camcorder recordings. One more tape placed in the "sell" pile was a find that I had previously found back in one of those El Paso lots in 2017: 60 Minutes and Murder, She Wrote from 2/17/1985 with commercials, except this was taken from WDAU instead of KDBC, which indeed had a few more local spots. Now on with the finds:

TAPE 1: Four hours of morning/midday footage off CNN on 7/4/1986 with most commercials, including much of the Take Two broadcast, followed by about 25 minutes of various programming off A&E circa spring 1986 with a few commercials. As you may expect, most of the first two hours was focused on the Statue of Liberty centennial with all those ships going across New York Harbor. BIII speed, unknown brand (the slipcase was a Zenith Maxitape).

TAPE 2: Just over three hours worth of morning coverage of ABC's Liberty Weekend also from Independence Day 1986 off WNEP/ABC with commercials. The original recorder must of either had a second Betamax player since much of this aired concurrently with the CNN broadcast above, or had a relative/friend who gave it to him/her. Fuji L-500 in BIII.

TAPE 3: Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Two Hearts, Fraggle Rock, and Inside The NFL recorded off HBO on 11/8/1985 with promos after each program, especially after Fraggle Rock and Inside The NFL. Sonly L-750 in BIII. The label mentioned the Reagan-Mondale debate on 10/7/1984, but was obviously taped over.

TAPE 4: The Neverending Story (1984), The 1983 colorized version of Way Out West (1936), and part of Missing In Action (1984) recorded off Cinemax on 10/11/1985, with a long promo break after the first movie. Zenith L-750 in BIII.

TAPE 5: 60 Minutes and Murder, She Wrote taped off WDAU/CBS on 4/7/1985 with commercials. Zenith L-500 in BII.

TAPE 6: The 1985 Gala of Stars recorded off WVIA/PBS on 3/27/1985 with one pledge break. Zenith L-750 in BII.

TAPE 7: Begins with 60 Minutes off WDAU/CBS on 3/24/1985 with commercials (missing the intro), followed by HBO world premiere movie presentation of Forbidden from the same night with no promos, then it cuts back to about ten minutes of footage off A&E from early 1985 with a few commercials. Zenith L-750 in BII.

TAPE 8: 60 Minutes, Murder, She Wrote, Crazy Like A Fox, and the first few minutes of Trapper John, M.D. as broadcast off WDAU/CBS on 3/17/1985 with commercials. The tracking quality on this tape was a bit bumpy at times given the multiple shows crossed off on the label, most notably being an apparent recording with 60 Minutes, AfterMASH, and the short-lived Four Seasons from 5/20/84. Still, always nice to find classic CBS Sunday night before the movie followed Murder, She Wrote. Sony L-750 in BII.

TAPE 9: Another classic CBS Sunday night block with 60 Minutes, Murder, She Wrote, Crazy Lake A Fox, and the beginning of Trapper John, M.D. as taped off WDAU on 3/10/1985 with commercials. Zenith L-750 in BII.

TAPE 10: Starts off with Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) recorded off Cinemax circa spring 1985 with a few promos, then it jumps back for about the last ten minutes of Murder, She Wrote and about the first fifteen minutes of the All-Star Party For Lucille Ball, taped off WDAU/CBS on 12/9/1984 with a couple commercial breaks. Sony L-500 in BIII.

TAPE 11: Another great find from the CBS Sunday Night vault! 60 Minutes, Murder, She Wrote, The Jeffersons, Alice, and the first several minutes of Trapper John, M.D. off WDAU/CBS on 12/16/1984 with commercials. Zenith L750 in BII. Its hard to believe that CBS once aired sitcoms on Sunday nights instead of dramas and movies.

Nice finds on those CBS blocks from the '80s. 60 Minutes gets harder to find, pre-1990. Still going through the Montana stash. I realize now that folks in Montana didn't care how bad or good a TV signal was as long as they could see something. Multiple *2000s* recordings in the Plains MT stash were from Missoula stations or KXLY Spokane (translators) yet the picture on two of those stations, KXLY and KECI, was often terrible and unwatchable. KPAX's translator signal was OK. The recordings consist of Torino Olympics footage (some of it really unwatchable, sell pile), several ACM/CMA awards from 2004-2007, a Johnny Cash tribute, and the 8/8/2008 repeat of Ellen DeGeneres, local and national news and the Beijing Opening Ceremonies from KECI, again with a rough signal.

I haven't checked much from the Stevensville stash yet, but turns out they weren't Seattle recordings after all. The Star Trek episodes I found were from WTVZ in Norfolk! 2,000 miles the *other* way from Montana. Hopefully, some newscasts or local stuff mixed in.

I leave Yakima for Idaho (permanently) in the second week of August. Since I'm in a small town with Boise an hour or more away, my plan remains the same: no more buying tapes after I move. The only exception is if there's a spectacular sale this fall or 2025 in the Boise/Nampa/McCall area that has early VK-250s and a bookshelf full of Betas. I have hundreds of tapes to digitize and sell, and too little time anyway with lesson planning, professional development, and daily classroom routines.

Scott - unfortunately the Hodgepodge Lodge is defunct. The flea market closed in 2019 and they had an estate sale to sell off the remaining contents in November 2020.
