Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Hi Crainbebo,

I noticed in a threat from December that you came across a tape that has old Days of our Lives episodes from the 90s.
Any chance you'd be willing to sell this?

I'm an avid fan, and looking to fill in some blanks from my collection. I've tape the show since the late 80s but have holes here and there.

No, the one that was covered in dirt I didn't even bother playing. Don't want to take chances with my VCR. I'm throwing out the America Undercover tape because of the nature of that program since it was all about sexually explicit TV shows and commercials, shock videos, etc. Wouldn't be the first time I've found such material on one of these tapes though, in which case I would always throw it away.

What would you do with such a tape if you were a Buffy or Ren/Stimpy fan and that tape contained episodes you were missing? I realize that someone who finds an AU show about racy TV objectionable most likely wouldn't be a fan of the gross-out humor of Ren/Stimpy, but Buffy fans are a pretty broad-based lot.

I don't do trades. However, within the next month or two, I will post that Days of Our Lives episode.
I received 50 VHS tapes this week from a suburb east of Kansas City. I have found countless hours of programming spanning 1989-2004. Network + cable. Don't have a final list yet because there's so much, but you will see one soon. Right now I have a backlog of at LEAST 20 tapes or more full of commercials and shows that I need to pull off and put on YouTube/Dailymotion.
On my YouTube channel, the last thing I posted was an entire Late Show with David Letterman from 9/15/94 taped off KCTV-5 Kansas City w/ commercials (guests Sandra Bullock, James Carville, and Marshall Crenshaw). On my Dailymotion channel you'll find a partial (~20 min) episode of Wheel of Fortune taped from a Saturday rerun in October 1994 also off KCTV w/ commercials...on an S-VHS TAPE! But there will be dozens and dozens and dozens more videos to post. So much programming - newscasts, talk shows, TV shows, game shows, movies...

Looking at some of your latest videos that you said were from S-VHS tapes, I'm surprised the picture looks as good as it does when you played them back. Supposedly, the playback of S-VHS tapes on a regular VHS VCR doesn't play back the best video because it's a completely different format. Here's a video I found of how an S-VHS release of the movie Ghost played back on a standard VCR. I experienced something similar playing an S-VHS tape in my VCR myself once before.

I had that happen on my old Panasonic PV-9662 VCR...on an S-VHS tape with Red Dwarf episodes on it (from KCTS). Tape was distorted B/W. Perhaps my current VCR (JVC HR-A55U) works better with S-VHS, because the quality is much better compared to regular VHS in EP mode...and no distortion, just black lines (from off-air recording) on one of the S-VHS tapes.

A great mix of programming. Already looking at buying a 2nd lot...mostly to get more game and talk shows ;)

Was digging through some boxes the other day and found a tape labeled The Equalizer,
which I believe would have been recorded off of KDKA-TV in late 1985. The white plastic spindles
on this cassette have turned a very deep shade of yellow. I am trying to get one
of my two VHS machines up and running to see what shape the recording is actually in.

Should be fine, but the yellow on the spools means the plastic is fading. As with packaging, when there's too much sunlight, it will fade into lighter colors...in this case, yellow. Age and environment also matter.

Been going through several tapes I bought at a local flea market (one I've been to several times before) last weekend and here's what I've found.

TAPE 1: Port Charles and General Hospital episodes from the 1998 Nurses Ball taped from WEWS on June 19, 22 and 23, 1998 with commercials; partially taped over episode of Jerry Springer ("I Have a Secret for My Man") and first few minutes of Montel Williams ("Surprises of a Lifetime") taped from WKYC in February 1998 with commercials; partial episodes of One Life to Live and General Hospital taped from WEWS in October 1986 with commercials

TAPE 2: Rush Hour 2 (2001) taped from TNT circa 2004 minus commercials; Romeo Must Die (2000) taped from TBS circa 2004 minus commercials; The Wiz (1978) taped from WeTV circa 2004 minus commercials. All of these were taped from recordings on a Time Warner Cable DVR.

TAPE 3: Spider-Man (2002) taped from HBO circa 2004; The Matrix (1999) taped from TNT circa 2004 minus commercials; the rest of the tape consists of various music videos taped from BET (Rap City and 106 & Park) and MTV2 (Monster Mix), including such artists as Usher, P. Diddy, R. Kelly, Ludacris, Destiny's Child, Petey Pablo, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Chingy, etc.

TAPE 4: Cocoon (1985) taped from WJW on 10/2/1988 with commercials; end of Channel 3 News at 7 with Leon Bibb, episode of Marblehead Manor and first 15-20 minutes of part two of The Fortunate Pilgrim (NBC miniseries) taped from WKYC on 4/4/1988 with commercials; partial episodes of ALF and Valerie's Family taped from WKYC on 3/7/1988 with commercials

TAPE 5: Five episodes of General Hospital taped from WEWS on February 9-13, 1998 with commercials

TAPE 6: The Program (1993) taped from Showtime in December 1994 with promos before and after the movie; episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers taped from WBNX in December 1994 with commercials; partial broadcast of Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Portland Trail Blazers taped from WUAB on 11/17/1994 with commercials

From the same vendor as the ones listed above, I also found a tape that partially contained a Movie Greats Network presentation of The Suicide Murders (1985) taped from WAKC (former ABC affiliate in Akron) sometime in 1988 with commercials, but I looked at very little of it, as my VCR would make squealing sounds when rewinding the tape. Not really going to bother with this one, which is a shame since WAKC footage isn't really easy to find. Even in the Akron/Canton areas, most people would watch and/or record WEWS in Cleveland instead of WAKC for ABC programs. Tape was recorded in SLP speed as well, so who knows what else may have been on there.

I also picked up five more tapes of Dark Shadows reruns on the Sci-Fi Channel from that one vendor who has so many of them. The ones I got were taped in December 1995 and January 1996 and have commercials. The tapes also have some Twilight Zone episodes here and there, also taped from the Sci-Fi Channel with commercials.

Does the tape of the O.J. Simpson chase include this infamous moment?

I don't do trades. However, within the next month or two, I will post that Days of Our Lives episode.

FYI, NBC has slashed almost all episodes of DOOL from youtube. Probably 80% of them are long gone. And we are talking 1000s of hours. Folks keep hiding the clips under obscure names, but NBC takes no prisoners when it comes to alleged copyright infringement.

It still hasn't kept people from uploading episodes from the 1960s thru 1980s though :)

Cheers & 73 :)

Cause a 30 year old soap opera episode has SOOOOO much market value.

Actually, DOOL is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Young and the Restless, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are also being slashed significantly on YT by Sony Pictures Television. That's why ALL episodes I have of those shows go straight to Dailymotion, with the commercial breaks staying on Y-T.
I also heard bad things about CBS and Entertainment Tonight episodes. They, as well as Hard Copy episodes, also go to Dailymotion.
My YT link is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0EuGATNJjqUQguq9Ec9sw

Found a few more finds as well.
On Tape 9, I found a second Bold & The Beautiful episode taped off KCTV in 1990 w/ commercials. Most of it, at least.
Tape 14 - Found 2 or 3 more Diagnosis Murder episodes off KPPX w/ commercials (1999), also includes part of an infomercial for some weight loss system.
Tape 17 - Found "Caught in the Act", a TV special with Dean Stockwell, taped off WDAF-4 Kansas City on 7/7/1993 with commercials. Also a short clip of Inside Edition (w/ Bill O'Reilly) on ouija boards, and part of "60 Minutes: The Entertainers" taped off KCTV in October 1991 with at least one commercial break. All were in SP mode.

I also bought a SECOND 50-tape lot from Holden, MO, and that will come next week. I'm sure I'll find even more of a mix of programming from Kansas City local TV and cable.

I'm glad I'm not the guy who spent all that time and money getting through law school, only
to get stuck in a job where I write cease-and-desist letters to YouTube all day.

The 2nd Holden lot arrived last week, and again, it was 50 tapes. Several were thrown out because they had no commercials or promos to speak of. One tape had no guard and the tape was exposed, and another tape was ate up in my VCR. Thankfully, my VCR has not had any more problems. So, here's the GOOD ones. Mostly movies with a couple of TV shows and miniseries.
Tape 1 - "Used Cars" taped off HBO in August 1987 w/ a promo break before the film.
Tape 2 - "Enemy Mine" taped off HBO on 2/21/1988 with promos before and after the movie; first few minutes of "The Guns of Navarone" follow it
Tape 3 - "Death Wish 3" taped off The Movie Channel in 1988 (no promos, went from the end of the previous movie right to Feature Presentation); part of "The Last Sunset" taped off WTBS on 3/19/1987 with commercials
Tape 4 - "Rambo: First Blood Part 2", Glory Years and "Sudden Death" (1985, not the Van Damme film from 10 years later) taped off HBO on 6/11/1987 with promos before Rambo, and promos in between the first two shows.
Tape 5 - "La Bamba" taped off Cinemax on 6/3/1988 with promos before the movie; part of "Home Before Dark" taped off WTBS on 3/7/1987 with commercials.
Tape 6 - "Hook" taped off Viewer's Choice PPV in January 1993 with a few promos before the movie; "Patriot Games" taped off unknown pay-TV channel; actually contains color bars at the end of the tape w/ tone
Tape 7 - "The Burbs" and "Tequila Sunrise" taped off First Run PPV in 1989 with promos in between (First Run was a C-Band satellite PPV service, which only lasted a few years on the Galaxy 2 satellite). Also, "Beaches" taped off Viewer's Choice in 1989 with promos before the movie.
Tape 8 - "Firestarter" taped off WGN-9 Chicago on 7/9/1987 with commercials (Universal Studios Debut Network broadcast).
Tape 9 - "The Man from Snowy River" taped off the Disney Channel sometime in 1989; "Return to Snowy River" and part of an episode of You and Me, Kid taped off The Disney Channel on 3/11/1989 with promos in between the two shows
Tape 10 - "The Robe" (1955) taped off KZKC-62 Kansas City in August 1987 with commercials; poor off-air recording
Tape 11 - "A View to a Kill" taped off ABC/KMBC 9 Kansas City in 1987 w/ commercials
Tape 12 - "Lone Wolf McQuade" taped off HBO in June 1987 with promos before the movie
Tape 13 - "Blind Fury" taped off Viewer's Choice PPV in January 1991 with promos before the movie; "Total Recall" taped off Action Pay-Per-View in 1991 with a few promos (also on C-Band); episodes of Unsolved Mysteries, Homicide: Life on the Street and partial Law & Order taped from a clean NBC satellite feed in 1990 or 1991 with national ads; and black spots (plus a couple of PSAs) during the local breaks.
Tape 14 - "Great Scout & Cathouse Thursday" and "The Last Sunset" (again) taped off TBS around 1989 with commercials. I now have both movies, and this one will likely be sold after I pull off the ads. I will be selling a ton of tapes soon on either eBay or Craigslist, as I will do some spring cleaning.
Tape 15 - "The Jigsaw Murders" taped off Viewer's Choice PPV in 1989 with promos before the movie; "Angel of H.E.A.T." taped off Action PPV in 1989 (borderline softcore show...)
Tape 16 - "Death Wish IV" taped off Showtime on 1/7/1989 with promos; episode of 1st and Ten taped off HBO in 1988 with promos after the program
Tape 17 - Part 3 and 4 of "Lonesome Dove" taped off WBBM/CBS in February 1989 with commercials; this was NOT from a Chicago cable system or OTA - WBBM was fed onto C-Band in the late 1980s as part of the PrimeTime 24 network package, on Satcom F2, transponder 2. WRAL would replace WBBM, and then WSEE in the late '90s.
Tape 18 - "Proud Men" taped off KMBC/ABC on 10/1/1987 with commercials
Tape 19 - "Raiders of the Lost Ark" taped off WABC/ABC in 1989 with commercials - also part of the PT24 package, on Satcom F2, transponder 4.
