Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

It was still *WOR* 9 in those days, not WWOR. This person must have lived in the Tri-State area and moved to NC later. Still going through a couple more Beta tapes, then I'm going back to VHS for several days. I have a big backlog of tapes to finish including new content from Yakima.

Been uploading several episodes per week. I hate how Siskel & Ebert.org was taken down. Now we have to manually upload everything all over again and NOT on YT because of copyright issues.
Have you been going through the rest of those Milwaukee tapes? I know you found some WMVS/10 stuff a while back.

Oh, can you upload that Real People episode from 1/2/1980 On Google Plus as well? Because your Youtube upload of it got BLOCKED!
You got to be careful while uploading episodes from that show in the future. Next time when you find a episode of Real People, DON'T POST IT TO YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, thanks. The show hasn't aired in 38 years, doesn't run in syndication, not on DVD, and they still have the balls to block it worldwide. Just like Sony and their copyright strikes for Wheel/Jeopardy, Days of Our Lives, etc.
Now 'Santa Barbara' episodes are being taken down. Do not post any episodes of the 1984-93 soap opera to YouTube. You will get a strike. I have two friends who ended up getting strikes for that show.
I have another 'Real People' episode that will also be put up on Google+. Can't remember if it's 1980 or 1981.

I Got One Thing To Say About This.

CURSE YOU AVERAGE JOES ENTERTAINMENT FOR BLOCKING REAL PEOPLE EPISODES!!!!!!!!!

Thankfully I was able to catch word of this on the comments section of your page and delete the two partial episodes I uploaded on another one of my channels before YouTube pulled them. I had uploaded one from 1987 and one from 1989, both incomplete. I do have a complete episode from 1990, but I never bothered to upload it to begin with because the audio on the recording was very weak for whatever reason. The tape also had part of the Another World episode that aired beforehand and an NBC News Special Report that aired shortly afterward.

A while back, you had mentioned Sally Jessy Raphael and Geraldo episodes were also being targeted. I think I have an idea of why that is. There's an app called Nosey that has full episodes of current and classic talk shows and syndicated court and reality shows, along with some classic game shows from Mark Goodson/Bill Todman/Fremantle Media. Sally and Geraldo are among the older shows available to watch on that app. Apparently they made the app into a website as well where these shows can be accessed. Strangely, there are some older shows on this app/website that YouTube doesn't really bother to take down episodes of, especially the game shows.

I hit three sales this morning, including the church across the street from me, who does a rummage sale every March. It wasn't great, only one tape was a keeper out of five. Other four tapes had a bunch of classic movies copied from rental tapes, what a disappointment. On one tape ('Please Don't Eat the Daisies'), the person forgot to stop the recording at the end and I got to see the color-changing MGM/UA logo and copyright stamp, in glorious SLP mono. Oh well - next time!
Tape 1 - 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' (1938), episode of The Short List and most of the Newport Jazz Festival broadcast taped off KYVE/PBS 1/4/2003 with promos in between. TDK T-160

Yesterday I took a day trip up to Wenatchee, WA. While there I visited the 3-story antique mall and a few thrift stores downtown. One locally owned thrift store was full of regular VHS tapes! There were also five home-recorded tapes there, and here's what I found on them.

Tape 1 - Monday Night Football: San Francisco 49ers vs. LA Rams taped off KTNV/13 Las Vegas-ABC on 12/11/1989, commercials were paused out during the first half but most breaks are intact during the 2nd; 49ers-Minnesota NFC Divisional Playoff taped off KLAS-8/CBS 1/6/1990, about 20% of the commercials intact
Tape 2 - Part of the San Francisco-Atlanta NFL game taped off KCPQ/FOX 9/27/1998 with commercials, in SP mode. KCPQ, along with other Seattle stations, are on cable by default in Wenatchee.
Tape 3 - Most of Super Bowl XXIX taped off KTNV/ABC 1/29/1995, most commercials intact, unfortunately the entire national anthem/coin toss/player introductions and part of the 1st quarter was taped over by softcore porn...ouch! I will be erasing that footage before I convert it to DVD.
Tape 4 - This tape is full of boxing matches off premium cable and PPV. Super Dave episode and Showtime Championship Boxing (Mike Tyson vs. Donovan Ruddock) taped off SHO 3/27/1991 with promos; Rodolfo Marin vs. Riddick Bowe, Jeff Fenech vs. Azumah Nelson and Tyson vs. Ruddock (Part 2) matches taped 6/28/1991 off pay-per-view, Moorer vs. Stewart fight taped off HBO 7/27/1991; Mercer vs. Morrison fight taped off pay-per-view in November 1991; Holyfield vs. Cooper fight taped off HBO 11/23/1991; ends with about a half-hour of 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (1989) taped off unknown pay-TV channel
Tape 5 - San Francisco 49ers-Philadelphia Eagels NFL game taped off KLAS/CBS 9/24/1989 with commercials

I have Super Bowl XXIX on tape as well. My copy was recorded from KNTV in San Jose and included part of the local newscast that aired afterward that featured a lot of coverage of the San Francisco 49ers' victory that night. There are some extras afterward on the tape as well, including that night's Sports Final broadcast with Gary Radnich on KRON and part of the 49ers' victory parade the next day on KTVU. Somewhat grainy picture throughout, as it was a second-generation copy from another tape. Kathie Lee Gifford sang the National Anthem that year along with 1995 Miss America Heather Whitestone translating it in sign language.

Is there a way you could post that 1989 San Francisco-Philadelphia game? If not, would love to trade for it.

I'll see what I can do, will probably get to the commercials in the next couple weeks. A great find, knowing this was a lucky thrift store find - and not from the Seattle or Spokane market either.

Kind of an off-the-wall question for you folks who enjoy this activity: Where do you find, and how do you keep repaired, VCR equipment to watch the tapes you find??

can you post the santa barbara episodes on another video site

Buzzr has a channel on You Tube that has episodes of classic game shows and I think they're connected to Nosey, which is also an app on Roku. For my part I wish they would have separate channels for the game and talk shows rather than all on one app. To me there's nothing classic about trash talk shows.

Found some tapes this weekend at two different sales. Not the best finds however.

Yard sale
Tape 1 - A disappointing tape with only 10 minutes of content - end of an Inside Edition episode and the start of a rerun of The Simpsons taped off KIMA/29 in January 2007 with a couple of commercial breaks, rest of it is erased.
Tape 2 - 'Vampires' (1998) taped off DirecTV's Direct Ticket PPV in March 1999 with a brief inteshow before the movie; 'Snake Eyes' (1998) taped off Direct Ticket PPV in March 1999 with a brief intershow before the movie; 'Ronin' (1998) taped off Direct Ticket PPV (no promos);

Church sale
Tape 3 - Most of Murder, She Wrote and first part of 'Lies Before Kisses' taped off KIMA/CBS 3/3/1991 with commercials; rest of the tape contains part 2, 3, 4 and a little bit of part 5 of Ken Burns' The Civil War taped off KYVE/PBS in March 1991 with a few pledge breaks
Tape 4 - Episodes of The Atheist Viewpoint and Health & Home Report, and Kerusso Ministries sermon (it's mainly just an anti-homosexual special...) taped off YCTV (Yakima Community Television) in early 1998, includes a bulletin board in between the 2nd and 3rd program
Tape 5 - 'Made in Heaven' (1987) taped off HBO 11/22/1991; Holyfield vs. Cooper fight, Tales from the Crypt and part of 'The Bonfire of the Vanities' (1990) taped off HBO 11/23/1991 with promos (just found this a few weeks ago in Wenatchee), 'The Christmas Wife' (1988) taped off HBO in late November 1991 with promos; part of 'The War of the Roses' (1989) taped off unknown pay-TV channel at the end

It's hard to believe it's been almost three months since I had any luck finding any new tapes. Last time I found anything was at that estate sale in Brunswick back in January and most of those tapes didn't even have commercials. I still haven't even gotten around to changing the clock on my VCR after the time change because I haven't been using it for quite a while.

I saw listings online for a couple of church rummage sales in my area coming up next weekend. One of the churches holding a sale next weekend was one I was at last year for another sale and I picked up a few tapes there last year, although I only found one with any YouTube-worthy content (specifically a local newsmagazine called Inner View on WJW taped in November 1993 with commercials).

While I'm not sure if I'm going to be making any eBay purchases anytime soon, I did see a few VHS lot listings from a seller in Rochester, New York. Seeing those listings reminded me of a flea market I went to in that area while on vacation back in 2012 called the Hodge Podge Lodge. I remember I picked up about ten tapes or so from that place although there were a LOT more there (and that's just the home-recorded tapes!) Quite a few finds from such stations as WROC, WHEC, WOKR (now WHAM), the now-defunct WRWB and cable channels. That's also where I got the tape of Super Bowl XXIX I mentioned before (which was taped from KNTV in San Jose). The place even sold Betamax tapes as well!

Speaking of eBay, I also spotted lots being sold out of Montpelier, Vermont (Plattsburgh/Burlington market). Much smaller than the Rochester lots, but the labels on the tapes indicate some goodies on some of these. One of my YouTube acquaintances actually bought one of these Vermont lots and scored some neat finds, including programming from WBVT (now WGMU), which I would imagine isn't the easiest to find since it's a low-power station.

Haven't bothered with the eBay lots since buying the Helena lot. I'll be waiting until something spectacular shows up, or when I sell some more tapes which I'm in the process of converting previously-viewed tapes to DVD. I've looked at those Montpelier lots and I'm not seeing what I'm looking for on those tapes. I'm just waiting for a 6-hour tape with The Simpsons or X-Files from the '90s...why? Any Fox footage taped before August 1997 would have been taped off Foxnet, and since they were only in selected below-100 markets, it's very hard to find. The WBVT-LP footage is absolutely rare, however. I see the tape dates back to when they were UPN. We used to have WB 100+ on cable here in Yakima (the fictional calls were 'KWYP') but I've never found anything from them on tape after 3+ years of searching.
I am considering contacting the Klamath Falls craigslist seller again, I left him alone earlier this year because his father passed away. He still has that home-recorded lot up on craigslist...it's a mix of content including The Outer Limits reruns, movies and other TV shows. And hopefully there's some KOTI/2 airchecks on them, since nothing from them is up on YouTube besides a 2016 news clip celebrating 60 years in broadcasting. Southern Oregon in general, including Medford, has a lack of old footage online whatsoever, similar to what the Boise market was like for many years. But for now I've got lots of new footage still to upload, so stay tuned!

I saw a VHS lot on eBay (well, actually 2). They are tapes from 1979 (!!) to the mid 1980s, unfortunately every single one is minus ads. Vega$, BJ and the Bear, Miami Vice, A-Team, Doctor Who, various others. You wouldn't believe how many are VK-250 RCAs. I would definitely go for it if the tapes had commercials.
I just looked and found two VHS lots - one from WI and one from PA on Letgo. Tapes on the first lot are all T-120 recorded. The second is a mix of retail and T-120 recorded, with a very old mid 1980s Maxell on top.
That Doctor Who might have been interesting because they later lost the colour signal and had to use inferior ways to get some colour back on his cheecks.

Two tapes found today at an estate sale. Too bad the second one was taped over many times. I'm hitting several yard sales tomorrow so there might be more to go with this.
Tape 1 - 'Black Moon Rising' (1986) taped off Cinemax circa summer 1988; The War in Korea (part 1) taped off TBS 9/9/1988 with commercials; part 2 of The War in Korea taped off TBS 9/10/1988 with commercials. Scotch T-120
Tape 2 - Part of Football Night in America and first 40 minutes of the Minnesota Vikings vs. Arizona Cardinals NFL game taped off KNDO-DT/NBC 12/6/2009 with commercials; episode of America's Funniest Home Videos taped off KAPP-DT/ABC 12/6/2009 with commercials; episode of Cold Case taped off KIMA-DT/CBS 12/6/2009 with commercials; ER rerun taped off TNT 12/7/2009 with commercials; episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live taped off KAPP-DT/ABC 12/7/2009 with commercials. Sony T-120, unfortunately taped over many times. The tape dated back to the late '80s.
