Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Scott,
did you see my PM regarding a VHS lot out of Aurora that was for sale? It's on OfferUp. Mix of older and newer tapes and some retail mixed in.

Not to butt in on your conversation, but I have a strong feeling that that lot may be from the guy who does Oddity Archive, he just moved and I know he has massive amounts of VHS and Beta tapes that he uses for his Youtube channel videos.

I've heard about the Oddity Archive and the Found Footage Fest...amazing what's out there, promotional, instructional or just plain-out-weird that were actually duplicated to VHS videotape. I don't collect vintage training videos but they can be so cheesy sometimes! If I have time this summer I'll upload the three Scholastic Book Fair preview videos I have, thanks to a school district's surplus sale. Oldest I have is 1995.
I'll try and head to a few sales this weekend.

Today I received a lot of tapes from Roseburg, Oregon off eBay. Sadly, only one tape came from Oregon (and it's the newest so far), the rest seem to be mainly Southern California. Here's the rundown so far - I've got about 5 tapes left to go. Nice stuff overall, had a couple of duds with one movie from a rental and a movie without commercials, and a couple of blank tapes mixed in.

Tape 1 - 'The King and I' (1956) taped off KPBS circa 1994 (no promos); partial episode of Rush Limbaugh and intro to News 10 Nightcast (replay) taped off KGTV-10 San Diego 3/2/1993 with commercials; episode of Rush Limbaugh and first couple minutes of Montel Williams taped off KCOP-13 8/4/1993 with commercials; episode of Rush Limbaugh taped off KGTV-10 8/6/1993 with commercials. Tape 2 - Most of 'Back to the Future' (1985) taped off KNSD-39 San Diego/NBC 11/13/1988 with commercials; 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) and part of News 8 Nightside taped off KFMB/CBS 11/27/1991 with commercials. Dynatone T-120

Memorex T-120
Tape 6 - 'It Nearly Wasn't Christmas' (1989) taped off KCAL-9 in December 1989 with commercials

Crainbebo,

I'd be interested in those 1991 Washington Huskies games you found there. Do you do trades or could you post some of the files privately on Google Docs? I actually have the game broadcasts already but neither have any of the commercials sadly.

I'd really love to, but it will take me quite a bit of time to get those all on the drive. Perhaps DVDs would be a better option? I'm currently (slowly) getting through the Roseburg tapes, just put up some 1990s KTLA stuff earlier tonight.

Hello, I'm Ann from Florida. I don't have any vhs tapes anymore They were all eventually lost or damaged in all our moves (military family). And I deal mostly with digital mp4 and downloads. especially for my old time radio programs.

I also collect The Wonderful World of Disney and in searching for a vhs copy of The Magnificent Rebel I was sent here, where I saw yesterday that someone mentioned they had a copy of The Magnificent Rebel episodes.

So I registered to message this person about maybe buying a copy of it from him but of course I didn'y book mark the page that the specific post was on.

Can any of you nice folks help me find this person?

Thanks in advance

Scott in Cleveland had a copy of the 1960 western 'The Magnificent Seven,' off The Movie Channel. Starred Eli Wallach and Steve McQueen. Is that the one you are looking for? I doubt he has the tape anymore...

I went to an estate sale yesterday in the Terrace Heights neighborhood, east of Yakima. One of the bedrooms had about 30 blank tapes, mostly 2000s tape stock, but there were some surprises mixed in. I bought eight random tapes for $1 each, and found some very cool programs mixed in!
Tape 1 - Part of 'Goldeneye' (1989) taped off unknown channel minus commercials; part of 'The Crazy World of Benny Hill' (1988) taped off KSTW-11 in April 1989 with commercials; 60 Minutes and Murder, She Wrote episodes taped off KIMA/CBS 5/7/1989 with commercials. TDK T-120
Tape 2 - Starts with an hour of an unknown 1970s movie minus commercials, then goes into The Shirley MacLaine Show (Showtime special) and a long intershow featuring a short film, promos and music videos taped off Showtime 3/2/1985; then cuts to a late-night/morning aircheck of WTBS: A partial broadcast of 'Cyborg 2087' (1966), World at Large (travelogues), Jimmy Swaggart, CNN Headline News and most of SuperStation Funtime taped off WTBS 2/24/1985 with commercials. Unknown brand T-120. This is my second oldest WTBS tape! (the oldest is the 1950 film 'Breakthrough' taped 6/27/1984)
Tape 3 - Part of Over New England, the Mark Russell Comedy Special and partial listing of job openings taped off KYVE/PBS 3/19/1992 with pledge breaks; Victor Borge 80th Birthday Gala and part of Anne of Green Gables/WonderWorks taped off KYVE/PBS 3/22/1992 with pledge breaks. RCA T-120

The estate sale owners mentioned that their next sale is August 30th-September 1st...labor day weekend. The next sale is humongous - whoever died was a hoarder and had boxes of stuff from floor to ceiling, in almost every room! Many of the boxes have not been touched in 10-15 years...should be a lot of fun. I hope this person had a VCR!

I'd really love to, but it will take me quite a bit of time to get those all on the drive. Perhaps DVDs would be a better option? I'm currently (slowly) getting through the Roseburg tapes, just put up some 1990s KTLA stuff earlier tonight.

I would be interested in those as well as any other sporting events you have if you could upload those for me?

I have no internet at home right now. Unable to do anything until AT LEAST mid-August. And even then, I'll be working a job (or two). So it may be even longer before I can send anything out. I have one eBay VHS lot up (35 tapes converted to DVD) and another going up next week...I'll just have to post the second listing at the library.
I'm out of money right now and probably won't hit any sales for a week or two - really looking forward to the Labor Day weekend extravaganza. Hoarder's house with boxes not opened in 15 years? It better have tapes!

Well, I was able to pull up a few dollars and get some tapes. One sale had them at a dime a piece on Saturday...yay for me! I've got an eBay lot up right now but no buyers...$60 for 35 tapes.

Yesterday I took a trip out west down the Old Lincoln Highway adjacent to US Route 30 for the annual Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sales. It's a yearly event that stretches from West Virginia to Iowa. In addition to sales at houses, businesses and other properties along the Old Lincoln Highway, there were many held on side streets off of that route as well. Most of my time was spent in the area of Wooster, Ohio, where I found a total of eight tapes (seven keepers), at both a yard sale and a flea market at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. I also broke my personal record for the oldest tape I've found.

Yard sale

Congrats on the old find! Not easy to find 1982 tapes in the wild nowadays...but I've had better luck than you. Don't think I'll find a tape from October 1979 ever again! That Part 2 of 'Children of the Dust' was one of the first local tapes I found.
I'm still going through previous tapes and have another lot going up to eBay soon. Currently my first lot is not getting any buyers! Very unusual for me.

Found ten more tapes (eight keepers) at a rummage sale at the local VFW Hall yesterday.

Well, I already congratulated you on the WNGT tape...
Also a nice find on the WEWS stuff from 1986. Getting harder to find tapes that old. And I've had a few rental duds where the previews were left on. Makes me want to slap myself in the face. Whoever copied it from the rental VHS probably knew the quality would suck thanks to Macrovision and other factors. I found a tape with Land Before Time once, where the previews were fast-forwarded from the other tape as it was recording.
I also don't understand poor-quality recordings. You don't live that far from Cleveland, right? Whoever taped Regarding Henry sure didn't mind the bad signal, I guess.
Didn't go to any sales this weekend due to lack of cash. Trying to save up for the Labor Day Weekend hoarder's sale that I've mentioned before. Estate sale ladies told me it would be huge!

Hard to tell where the original owner of these tapes lived since I saw a combination of both Cleveland and Toledo stations. This rummage sale was at the Medina VFW Hall and Medina is about 33 miles south of Cleveland.

Something else I failed to mention was that WEWS aired 9 to 5 uncensored. Had a lot of profanity for a PG-rated movie, but don't forget, the PG-13 rating didn't exist in 1980. From what I've found on some of these older tapes, local TV stations showing raunchier films unedited (with content advisories/disclaimers) wasn't exactly uncommon in the '80s and early '90s. I've found uncut TV airings of The Deer Hunter on WLVI in Boston, Animal House on WUPW in Toledo and Top Gun on WUAB in Cleveland. In fact, on the night of WOIO's first broadcast day in 1985, the station aired Animal House uncut in prime time.

My dad has quite a few.

A Charlie Brown Christmas tape from 1996 recorded from CBS

A Three Stooges tape from I believe 1997 (?)

That's the same VCR/DVD recorder combo I have. When I go through the stuff I want to put on my YouTube channel, I dub what I want to upload from the tapes onto DVD, finalize the DVD and use the AOA DVD Ripper software to put it on my computer to upload. The oldest tape I have right now contains recordings of the movies Wings and the Woman and The Benny Goodman Story and an episode of The Jack Benny Program, and it plays back very well, which I was kind of surprised at.

What is your YouTube channel?
