Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Hard to believe an estate sale was being held on a Monday afternoon, but there was one in Medina that I visited that day and picked up a few more tapes. It was actually a continuation of a sale that was held throughout last weekend. Three keepers out of four tapes found.

TAPE 1: The Wonderful World of Disney presentation of Toy Story 2 (1999) taped from WEWS on 11/4/2001 with commercials; four episodes of La Femme Nikita taped from USA on 3/4/2001 with commercials, shown in a marathon leading up to the final episode that night. Sony T-120.

TAPE 2: The Wonderful World of Disney presentation of Tarzan (1999) taped from WEWS on 2/24/2002 with commercials; part of Round 3 of the 2001 EMC World Cup taped from WEWS on 11/17/2001 with commercials. Maxell T-160.

TAPE 3: Camelot (1967) taped from Cinemax circa 1986; partially taped-over two-hour pilot episode of Blacke's Magic taped from WKYC on 1/5/1986 with commercials; last few minutes of The Life and Times of Santa Claus (CBS holiday special) taped from WJW on 12/17/1985 with a few commercials; partial episodes of Days of Our Lives and Another World taped from WKYC on 12/17/1985 with commercials. TDK T-120.

I just recently found a used Toshiba DVD recorder that was manufactured in 2014. But are any actually being manufactured now? It looks like to me that it's becoming like VCRs with used being the only option now.

I did some checking and found this article: https://www.lifewire.com/disappearing-dvd-recorder-1846591 Apparently DVD recorders are becoming hard to find except for used models and puts the blame on the the movie and TV industry.

Three tapes found at a yard sale in Union Gap on Friday (my last tape lot living in Yakima), and another two tapes found at the Ellensburg Goodwill of all places (wow!) on Sunday...my first tape lot from my new location here in town. However, the blanks were 'bundled' with retail so I had to pay for 2 bundles, in which a third blank in the second bundle with a retail copy of Absolute Power was a rental dud itself.

Union Gap
Tape 1 - Hagler vs. Leonard fight taped off HBO 4/11/1987; end of 'Turk 182' (1985) and about 40 minutes of 'Brewster's Millions' (1985) taped off HBO earlier that night with promos. Sony T-120
Tape 2 - Part 1 of Buffalo Girls, 11 News at 11 and an hour and a half of 'Cyrano de Bergerac' (1950) taped off KSTW/CBS 4/30-5/1/1995 with commercials; very end of part 2 of Texas and KOMO News 4 taped off KOMO/ABC 4/17-18/1995 with commercials. Scotch T-120 taped over multiple times

I haven't updated this in a while, but last Sunday, I picked up 13 more tapes at the Litchfield Flea Market. A few of them were from the same vendor I purchased from last time I was there.

Vendor #1--same vendor I bought from last time--more duds than keepers this time, six tapes in all, but only two worth keeping
TAPE 1: The Fugitive (1993) taped from HBO in October 1994; Falling Down (1993) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa October 1994; Lost in Yonkers (1993) taped from HBO in October 1994 with a few promos afterward. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 2: Lengthy hodgepodge of Cartoon Network programs--Greatest Cartoon Countdown taped on 3/21/1999, various episodes of Acme Hour, The Bugs and Daffy Show, Tom and Jerry and Johnny Bravo taped in March 1999, all with commercials. Maxell T-120.

One other tape I got had three pay TV movies without promos, but at the end, also had three music videos taped from VH1 circa 1993--specifically "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and RuPaul, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf, and "I Can See Clearly Now" by Jimmy Cliff.

Memorex T-120.

Sony T-160.

Additionally, I picked up nine more tapes today at a moving sale in Medina. The labels have such markings as "Kristy" (maybe they mean Christy, the CBS series?), "NYPD Blue," "Noah's Ark" (could be the 1999 NBC miniseries?), "Cheers Anniversary Special," "Frazier" (I'm guessing they meant Frasier), "Man in the Moon," "Indians Parade," "Mopar Nationals" and "Homefront" (old ABC series from the early '90s). Haven't looked through any of them yet.

Now on to some bad news, unfortunately. After three years of having my current YouTube account, I finally got a copyright strike on it. Quite some time ago, I uploaded the commercials from part one of the CBS miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-sac and it evidently got reported by Warner Bros. I'm guessing the reason for that was because I included the CBS Special Movie opening sequence to the program in the video.

People probably know this by now, but I have gotten two strikes on the VHSgoodiesWA3 account within the past week and a half. Both for episodes of Sunset Beach...they have been up for nearly 2 years without any issues. Then they were taken down, both of 'em. One more and I lose 7000+ videos. Ugh. New videos are being put up on VHSgoodiesWA, the old account.

Yard sales weren't of any luck today, but the Goodwill in Ellensburg had two more blanks bundled for 99 cents for the bundle. Here's what I found...
Tape 1 - End of Front Runners and Winnie the Pooh & Christmas Too taped off KOMO/ABC on 12/14/1991 with some commercials. Rest of tape is blank. Maxell T-120
Tape 2 - End of The Education of Max Bickford and start of '9/11' (2002) taped off KIMA/CBS (K51BD translator) 3/10/2002 with commercials; then gets taped over by an episode of Boston Legal, KAPP/KVEW Local News at 11 and a partial episode of The Outer Limits (1995 series) taped off KAPP/ABC (K63BZ translator) on 11/26/2006 with commercials. Fuji T-120

Cbs probably gave that strike because they have the show on their paid cbs all access app on demand section. It is unfortunate that they would not just send you a request to take it down instead of filing a copyright strike but common courtesy is not that common these days in my opinion unfortunately.

Huh, didn't know The Outer Limits was still being shown in reruns in syndication that long after the show had ended. Funny that you found that since I found that partial episode of the series on one of the tapes I got last weekend, it was taped from WIXT in Syracuse.

The moving sale I went to yesterday had a big box of used blanks that I got my finds from. The homeowner actually offered to sell me the entire box for just five bucks, but I'd rather I not do that since I have so many of these taking up space at home right now as it is. I went through one of the tapes last night--the one marked "Kristy"--and it turned out to be a lengthy aircheck of CNN Headline News from August/September 2007 (Nancy Grace, Showbiz Tonight, Glenn Beck, etc.) Tape is an early to mid '90s Memorex T-120. At the beginning was a couple seconds of an episode of Coach before it cut to the Headline News footage. Still not done looking through this one.

I just went to Goodwill in Spencer, Iowa earlier today and I found one recorded VHS tape on the shelf along with other Disney movies.

1. Lassie Come Home (1943) and The Making of The Assassination File - recorded from Starz Encore around summer 1996 with promos before each movie; also includes the first 15 minutes of Don Juan Demarco before the recordings stops; TNN Motorsports RaceTalk recorded on TNN sometime around summer 1996 - also includes TNN sign off as well as infomercials for Ab Roller Plus, Blue Coral One Step Touchless System, Making Money Now System, Alex Langer's Flying Lure, hyG Ionic Toothbrush, and Ab Roller Plus (x2) all recorded from TNN during the overnight hours around summer 1996.

Pre-Recorded VHS Tapes:
1. Filmation's Ghostbusters: Heroes, Haunts, and Hilarity - Just for Kids Video case (1989 release, LP Video mode)
2. Pollyanna (Vault Disney Collection release, 2002 - Print Date: 113004 (November 30, 2004)

Someone left that tape running and it got 3 hours of late night infomercials...I have a tape with 1994-era Discovery Channel and a couple of late night infomercials afterwards. Many of these '90s infomercials were amusing to watch.
On the factory rental front, I didn't pick it up but I saw a 2005 VHS copy of 'The Island' with Ewan McGregor. Now that's a very late release! As I recall, the print date was in November of 2005. Just a couple months before the major companies dumped VHS. It was a former rental and everything too! I have one of the last VHS releases in a box somewhere, may be back in Yakima actually. It's the January 2006 VHS release of Nicolas Cage's 'Lord of War' from Lionsgate. I think the print date was actually late 2005.
There was also a really crudely-colored box of a public domain cartoon video...Bugs Bunny. Since when is Bugs Bunny a PURPLE rabbit?!! Parents Approved Video was the 'company'. There must have been 100 of these companies at one point, just releasing cartoons on the junkiest and cheapest tapes they could find in SLP mode. When I was little I occasionally watched a Tweety Bird tape from UAV. It was just a mix of different cartoons, the Tweety Bird one was the debut cartoon 'A Tale of Two Kitties' from 1942.
Nothing else unusual or old for that matter.

There were quite a few of those public domain home video companies back then (Kids Klassics & Diamond Entertainment Corpration were a couple of others.). I think I have that same Tweety Bird tape.

I still have some of those types of tapes with 6 hours of cartoons. I haven't played them in years and don't know how they will hold up now. But then most of them can be found on cheap PD channels on Roku now.

Would you be interested in selling the tape one with nancy grace and showbiz tonight on it?

I drove 35 miles back into Yakima yesterday and hit a couple of estate sales, one near downtown and another out in West Valley. Nice local finds made!

First sale
Tape 1 - 'Collateral Damage' (2002) taped off pay-per-view circa early 2003; broadcast of Good Morning America taped off KAPP/ABC 11/20/2003 with commercials. TDK T-120
another tape had Pretty Woman copied from a rental

Tape 2 - First of two tapes marked 'Flood 96'. Starts with a partial broadcast of the 2/10/1996 KAPP Northwest Now with commercials; followed by clips of The Weather Channel, Headline News and CNN from the same day (early evening); followed by partial broadcasts of KNDO's First at Five, KAPP 35 News at 5:30 and KIMA News at 6 taped 2/12/1996, with very few commercials on all broadcasts; clips of KNDO First at Five, KAPP 35 News at 5:30 and KIMA News at 6 taped 2/13/1996 (same situation with ads); most of 'To Each His Own' (1946) taped off AMC 2/14/1996 with some promos at the end. Maxell T-120. This tape was loaded with goodies on it. The February 1996 floods were some of the worst to ever hit central Washington. Many places were under feet of water, hundreds lost their homes, Nile was cut off from the rest of the world for weeks after the bridge leading out of the area collapsed, and Ellensburg had its worst flooding event in recent history too. This was the same system that sparked the much-more-catastrophic flooding in Portland and the Willamette Valley.

Tape 5 - Starts with 11 minutes of a KNDO First at Five broadcast taped sometime in mid February 1996 with one commercial break (flood coverage); KIMA Flood of '96 special with commercials (already have the retail copy of this); ends with partial broadcast of 'The Last of the Mohicans' (1992) taped off HBO 10/9/1993 with promos afterwards. Laser T-120
Tape 6 - Coverage of the 1989 National Finals Rodeo and about 30 minutes of second round coverage from the Chrysler Team Championships taped off ESPN 12/8/1989 with commercials; partial coverage of the 1987 National Finals Rodeo taped off ESPN sometime in December 1987 with commercials; part of 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Next week I'm back in Yakima for another estate sale that will be on Craigslist this Thursday. (Some of the estate sale folks down there let me know in advance about where the next sale is approximately.) This one is just loaded with home-recorded VHS. I don't know how many, probably several dozen however. Looks like cherry pickin' time.

Also, for those of you who are familiar with the AOA DVD Ripper, for whatever reason, my software has not been working with a couple of DVD+Rs I finalized of some of the more recent finds I want to put on YouTube. The DVD will load into the ripper, but when I try to rip anything, it won't rip or convert anything from said discs. I did install a different piece of software called WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, and it does work with the latest discs I put together, but it is not nearly as user-friendly as AOA is. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem I'm having with AOA could be and what I should do? When I try to rip, it will stall for a minute or two, and then a message will appear that says "Unable to read" or something to that effect.
