Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

And if there ever comes a day where the fine folks at Google yank us all off and the website becomes nothing but a showcase for million-subscriber nerds and PewDiePie, we'll all go to Internet Archive and live happily ever after, the end.

Just received another strike this morning on one of my channels. This time, it was Fox for an early Divorce Court episode that I posted YEARS ago and it had well over 100,000 views. My biggest hit ever on any of my channels and they finally yanked it off even though it's not like you can find Mablean Ephraim reruns on television currently. Ugh.

Was this the FOX version or the 1980s version? I've got a couple episodes from that earlier version posted on a couple of my remaining channels. No strikes on those as of this morning.

Meanwhile, I've made my first eBay purchase of the year, 14 Betas from a seller based out of the small Tri-Cities market of Northeast Tennessee. While the seller photo doesn't seem interesting at first as none of the box covers are present, it does reveal the true age of many of those tapes: More than half contain the first generation label with "Betamax" spelled out on the upper right, and the remainder have the second generation Beta letter with the square box on the right, indicating that the tape stock certainly dates from the disco years (although I'd be finding Hee Haw or That Nashville Music more likely in that market). The seller mentioned that he tended to leave the tape rolling rather than zapping out the commercials, so there's certainly some interesting potential coming up. The wait may take a little longer than usual due to the backlog of all those online returns from Santa, but its certainly worth the look! The Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport area had no indy stations, just the Big 3 and PBS at the time (late '70s/early '80s), so movies would be restricted to certain hours.

Fox version, 1999-present. Unless they are going to put all those Mablean Ephraim episodes on a streaming service, it's just another studio getting greedy again. I can't count how many talk shows, game shows and daytime programming, in general, is now on the 'no-no' list. It was a season 1 episode taped in the summer of 2000. It got around 300 likes and around 110K views...
Many stations are still showing her 'fake' Byron Allen show, Justice with Judge Mablean.

I don't know for sure but it may be on Nosey, a streaming channel with repeats of daytime (mainly trash) talk shows and courtroom shows.

Looks like someone snatched up another of his 1970s lots before I could message you about it. There may be another lot up there but it looks totally unmarked so treasure hunt of sorts.

One more tape from my dad's personal archive, this one I partially taped over as youth, though some of my tapeover patterns I found strange:

1992-12-28 Freedom Bowl 2nd Half--Raycom syndicated on WRDC28
1992-12-25 Aloha Bowl WTVD11 only 14 minute partial this partially taped over...

1990-12-23 ABC Network airing of "The Golden Child" (not the network premiere) only 1:30 in length so I must have taped over the first 30 minutes which is odd since the tapeover was a total of 90 minutes?!?!?

The last thing on the tape I was quite excited for, and surprised, I never saw this film until way after my dad died, and it quickly became one of my favorites, so I was quite puzzled when I found out he taped this but never talked about it...

1991-1-21 Fox Night at the Movies "License to Drive" (was this the network premiere?) complete WLFL22

It was a fun coincidence to see something nearly 30 years to the date it aired, I don't do that often and strictly by accident. Oddly enough the section of the tape with The Golden Child airing tracked terribly, but the other stuff seemed to play ok on my VCR. This was originally recorded with a 1985 era 4 head Panasonic Mono VCR that we had until it broke in 1996. I've heard that tapes play back best on the VCR they were originally recorded on but this VCR was junked decades ago.

That lot of vintage Betas from NE TN came in today. Unfortunately, this seller goes on my "do not buy" list, and frankly I'm glad I missed out on those other lots by her. After beginner's luck with the first tape, the remaining 13 (unlucky!?!) were all duds: old movies (mostly starring John Wayne) without commercials/pay TV, many of them rental duds. An individual performance of Suzi Quattro's "Stumblin' In" was also found, but as you may expect, that was it. Also, four scoped episodes of The Muppet Show with no commercials and some without the credits even. What a shame; so many folks (especially in the sticks) taped those gun-weaving flicks around the time of Mr. Wayne's death, unaware with the foresight about how rare the "good" stuff could become like daytime TV, news, and even late night music shows.

Beta Tape: Flame of Barbary Coast (1945) taped off WTCG (now TBS) circa 1979 without commercials (likely a dub due to dead air before and after), followed by about two-thirds of Mork and Mindy taped off WJZ/ABC on 1/25/1979 with two commercial breaks, missing approximately the first six minutes and the close. There are a couple brief news segments taped over during this broadcast (about 20-30 seconds, one off WJHL and another off WBAL).

Meanwhile, my uncle sent four VHS tapes from Florida yesterday for me that he recorded himself. Its too bad that about a year or so into tape hunting, he trashed the bulk of his collection: what a shame as I couldn't imagine how many other classic O's/Baltimore Colts/Washington Bullets games may have been found since he taped quite a bit. At least my latest trade includes several classic O's games with commercials, so at least there's something there. Typical ad zapper for the era with approximately two-thirds of all commercial breaks zapped.

VHS Tape 1: The 50th MLB All-Star Game, recorded off WAAT/NBC (formerly WCMC and later WMGM) with about 3/4ths of all commercials intact, followed by a clip of the opening and pregame of a 1983 USFL divisional round playoff game off an unknown ABC station with a few commercials. This supplants a copy that was recorded off a station in Puerto Rico that used the NBC feed with periodic commentary in Spanish, but that had tape issues and I could only get about two-thirds of the game, plus almost all commercials there were zapped. Still, its cool finding rare stuff from a now defunct station serving South Jersey.

VHS Tape 2: Game 5 of the 1983 World Series, recorded off WJZ/ABC w/commercials, followed by various news clips of the Orioles celebration off various Baltimore stations, followed by the Baltimore Colts-Philadelphia Eagles recorded off WMAR/NBC on 10/23/1983 with some commercials during the first quarter only. That was the final Colts game ever to be televised in Baltimore based upon personal recollections, as most home games that season were blacked out locally. I've already got a copy that I received in a trade that came off of WXYZ, but its cool having the winning team's affiliate as well.

VHS Tape 3: Games 3 and 4 of the World Series recorded off WJZ/ABC with a few commercials, followed by most of Saturday Night Live recorded off WMAR/NBC on 10/15/1983 with the last three commercial breaks intact. Among the locals included one for B104 FM, WMAR-FM 106, Tate Dodge ("nobody has what Tate has!"), and a local parade for the O's.

VHS Tape 4: Begins with a seven-minute clip of Donahue from circa fall 1983 featuring men with just their trunks while dancing to the then-contemporary hits of the day (including Michael Jackson's P.Y.T.), followed by Games 1 and 2 of the 1983 World Series recorded off WJZ/ABC without commercials, followed by most of Thicke of the Night of an unknown Baltimore station on 10/12/1983 with one commercial break, followed by most of an episode of Hill Street Blues presumably off WMAR/NBC with no commercials or closing. Most of this is junk and that I can probably trade for that game elsewhere since World Series games from the 1980s onwards are easy to find in the trading circuit, but that Alan Thick late night show is certainly worth keeping.

Thanks for letting me know about that Tennessee seller. I kept some of the Beta lots in mind but now I'll stick away from them because of the sheer amount of scoped recordings. I will be putting up another lot of tapes this weekend I hope...about 17 tapes. This will quickly be followed by another 25+. In the last 60 days I've sent out over 150 tapes in lots. Great to get more space cleared out of my collection.

Another old tape recorded by my dad pulled from the box, half the contents were what was labeled, half not...

1. 1990/11/21 Crocodile Dundee ABC Network airing WTVD11 EP complete minus last commercial break after movie ended

2. 1990/11/23 Great Performances Harry Connick Jr. WUNC4 This, like many of the older episodes of this show are quite hard to find. For some reason PBS has a spotty archive and almost never reairs old stuff. EP complete

3. 1985/9/13 Back to Next Saturday (only 3 minutes) this was taped over by the prior stuff, sadly this was in SP and in amazing shape, much better than the multi-generation copies on Youtube. WPTF28

4. Road to Total War, this looked to be a 1985? airing of this series, didn't find too much info online about it :15 tapeover)

5. 1986/5/27 Garfield in Paradise WRAL5 EP complete

6. 1986/5/27 Its Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown (I believe the original airing of this was in 1984, the second airing was done as an hour long block with the Garfield cartoon EP complete --Crazy to think in the 80s era CBS regularly did cartoon primetime specials

7. 1985/10/29 Garfield's Halloween Adventure :21 partial tapeover) WRAL5 EP looks like dad didn't watch this all the way through then taped it over with

8. 1985/11/6 You're A Good Man Charlie Brown :56 missing first minute or so) WRAL5 EP. I think this was the first airing of this particular Peanuts special

This was all on a Sony Dynamicron T120. This tape held up a lot better than the other ones I viewed from that era. Even after 35+ years the tracking held up and the colors were vibrant, and that is saying alot as this tape appeared to be taped over many times.

After selling nearly 120 tapes in the past month and half, I was able to successfully win my first eBay lot of the year. Twenty-six Betamax tapes came to my door yesterday from Anacortes WA. I've been near that town but have not visited it. It's on Fidalgo Island, north of Whidbey Island and W of Mount Vernon. It's 15 miles to KVOS' transmitter on Mt. Constitution, 35 miles to Victoria, 50 to Vancouver, and 60 to Seattle. Here's the finds I've made so far. Some cool finds and new records for oldest Seattle recordings personally found! Also my first find from a CTV station (CHAN/BCTV 8).
Tape 1 - Four episodes of All Creatures Great and Small - two off KCTS without promos, another taped off KCTS/PBS in January 1989 with promos; and a fourth episode taped off A&E in June 1990 with commercials. Fuji L-750
Tape 2 - ABC World News Tonight clip on the 50th anniversary of the DC-3, taped 12/17/1985 off KOMO; NOVA episode on the 50th anniversary of the DC-3, taped off KCTS/PBS later that night; various other aircraft documentaries follow: Ghosts of the Sky with Glenn Ford (special on Confederate Air Force planes), The Red Baron (documentary on Manfred von Richthofen), and Air Force One: The Planes and the Presidents, all taped in the mid-late '80s, no promos. Sony L-750
Tape 3 - 'Dances with Wolves' (1990) taped off CHAN-8/CTV Vancouver (BCTV) on 11/7/1993 with commercials...first find from a Canadian station outside of CBC. Also: partial broadcast of Chopper Wars (war documentary) taped off unknown channel with no commercials, likely Discovery Channel; and part of 'Sergeant York' (1941) taped off unknown channel with no ads or promos. Kodak L-750
Tape 4 - Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals preseason game, an NFL Films 2000 Seahawks season recap, Ultimate Performances of the 2000 Season and open to the Lighter Side of Sports taped off KTWB-22 on 8/18-19/2001 with commercials
Tape 5 - 'Laura Lansing Slept Here' (1988) taped off KING/NBC on 3/7/1988 with commercials; ends with several minutes of a KIRO Eyewitness News broadcast circa early 1988, but the video is very poor and the audio is in and out. Maxell L-750
Tape 6 - 'Shane' (1953) taped off KSTW-11 on 1/17/1988 with commercials and news open (Beta II); part of 'Sophie's Choice' (1982) taped off KIRO/CBS on 8/20/1986 with commercials; partial episode of Cagney & Lacey and open to KIRO Eyewitness News taped off KIRO/CBS on 10/15/1984 with commercials. Sony L-750 HG
Tape 7 - 'Marriage On the Rocks' (1965) and open to the Apollo Comedy Hour taped off KTZZ-22 in February 1994 with commercials. BASF L-750
Tape 8 - Arizona State vs. California football game taped off KIRO-7 on 11/9/1996 with commercials; part of 'The Witches' (1990) taped off unknown channel, no commercials or promos. Sony ESX L-750
Tape 9 - Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles NFL game and The 5th Quarter (locally-produced recap) taped off KCPQ/Fox on 9/23/2001 with commercials, the day that NFL resumed games after 9/11. SKC L-750
Tape 10 - Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers NFL game and The Locker Room with Tim Healey taped off KIRO/CBS on 11/15/1987 with commercials. Fuji L-750
Tape 11 - 'Twins' (1988) taped off KSTW-11 on 5/8/1994 with commercials; end of 'Firefox' (1982) off unknown pay-TV channel; 'The Cat from Outer Space' (1978) taped off The Disney Channel in the mid-late 1980s; episode of Mr. Ed taped off Nick at Nite minus commercials; and ends with my oldest ever find from CMT(V)...about eight or nine minutes worth from late 1987 with commercials! Kodak L-750
Tape 12 - Seven 30 with Steve Raible, Davis Rules and Brooklyn Bridge episodes taped off KIRO/CBS on 3/4/1992 with commercials; Davis Rules and Brooklyn Bridge taped off KIRO/CBS on 3/11/1992 with commercials. Polaroid L-750
Tape 13 - Starts with the end of 'Baby Take a Bow' (1934 - colorized) taped off unknown channel, and part of 'Flight of the Navigator' (1986) taped off unknown channel; cuts to 'Perry Mason: The Case of the Jealous Jokester' (1995) taped off KING/NBC on 4/10/1995 with commercials; part of 'The Magnificent Ambersons' (1942) taped off unknown channel; nearly all of 'The Little Princess' (1939) taped off Disney Channel in the late '80s. TDK L-750
Tape 14 - Washington State at Arizona State football game taped off KTWB-22 on 11/10/2001 with commercials
Tape 15 - 'Gunga Din' (1939) taped off KSTW-11 on 3/29/1987 with commercials; 'Captain Blood' (1935 - Colorized) and part of the Star Search to Stardom special taped off KCPQ-13 on 4/4/1987 with commercials. SKC L-750
Tape 16 - Four broadcasts of Meeting Place, a Canadian religious program featuring church services from around the country, taped off CBUT/CBC in summer 1994. The first broadcast comes from the Holy Family Parish in St, Albert AB, the second from United Church in Bridgewater, N.S., the third comes from a catholic church in Oshawa ON, and the fourth comes from an angelican church in Coquitlam, B.C, just miles east of Vancouver. While these were great finds and probably hard-to-find, they sadly tapeed over multiple episodes of ALF, which were likely first-run. Kodak L-750
Tape 17 - 'Von Ryan's Express' (1965) taped off KVOS-12 in January 1992 with commercials; part of 'The Paradine Case' (1947) taped off KCPQ-13 in July 1985 with a few commercials, but some breaks were paused out. BASF L-750
Tape 18 - 'Fiddler on the Roof' (1971) taped off KCPQ-13 circa September 1983 with a few commercials before the movie, all during the movie were paused out; most of 'Voices' (1979) taped off unknown channel without ads, perhaps HBO? Sears B-Vision L-750. The oldest tape in the lot, and while it was great to find my oldest Seattle recording, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more TV recordings or commercials on this tape...oh well, luck of the draw.
Tape 19 - Parts 1 and 2 of The Far Pavillions taped off KCPQ-13 on 9/17 and 9/18/1985 with commercials. Maxell L-750
Tape 20 - Seattle Seahawks at Oakland Raiders NFL game, the Seahawks Postgame Show with Paul Silvi, and open to KING 5 News at 5 taped off KING/NBC on 12/14/1997 with commercials; partial broadcast of Today taped off KING/NBC on 9/5/1986 with commercials (Jean Enersen sits in for Jane Pauley! Also includes updates on the Pan Am Flight 73 hostage situation, and an interesting local news break with a translator for the hearing-impaired.)
There are also two Ampex Betas in the lot. I am not going through these until I can get the tapes baked. Ampex's are well-known for sticky shed syndrome, and what I do not need is clogged Beta heads - or worse.

Hopefully one of these days I can find a Betamax VCR out in the wild. Would be nice if I could find a Beta VCR and tapes at the same time. Should be easy to connect it to my DVD recorder so I can digitize the contents of the Beta tapes.

Believe it or not, my Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder is still in the repair shop. The recent delays in mailing must have been causing the replacement parts needed to arrive later than usual. I just talked with the repairman on the phone on Monday and he said my machine is "next in line" to be fixed, but also said he's going to be out of town for a week, so that will delay that process even more. Diagnosis was bad belts and a weak clutch, likely caused just by how much it's been used in the close to eight years I've had it.
Once I get it back, I have nine tapes that I got since that time that haven't been searched through yet. Because of all this, though, I missed out on that lot from Mentor on Craigslist.

Lets try something different, a game of guess what is on this tape? The hint is what was actually scribbled on the tape label, but knowing my luck, it is never as its written or seems...

"Happy New Year (w/ Mel Torme, G.M. Orch.)
Mission Impossible (2 Epis.?)
Newhart"

Tape Stock is a T120 Silver Shadow distributed by Woolworths, retail price of $4.99 is part of the cardboard slipcover art.

Lets see those guesses in the next 48 hours as I finish checking what is actually on this. Best guess wins the pride of making me and others laugh.
