Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I checked the SNL/Red Shoe Diaries tape and only about 1/2 hour of SNL is on the tape, with one commercial break w/ sound. It immediately follows on the tape by Red Shoe Diaries (erotic). Maybe I should refund it.

At the moment I don't have all the blank tapes since some were packed in other boxes and put into storage. Here's what I have...
Tape 10: The Beast/UFO Incident movies taped off an unknown channel (no commercials or promos)
Tape 28: A Touch of Frost: Fun Times for Swingers/Dalziel & Pascoe: Child's Play/Touch of Frost: House Calls, all A&E mystery movie programs taped around 1997 or 98
Tape 29: Several eps of the short-lived "Savage Dragon" cartoon taped off USA in 1995-96
Tape 30: Dalziel & Pascoe: An Advancement of Learning/Cracker: Brotherly Love/Sherlock Holmes: Wisteria Lodge also taped off A&E around 1997
Tape 31: Dalziel & Pascoe: Ruling Passion/Inspector Alleyn: Dead Water/Inspector Morse: Promised Land (A&E)
Tape 32: Silent Witness: Darkness Visible/Touch of Frost: Deep Waters/Dalziel & Pascoe: A Killing Kindness (A&E around 1997/98)
Tape 33: Cracker: White Ghost/Dalziel & Pascoe: An Autumn Shroud/A Touch of Frost: Stranger in the House/Inspector Morse: The Secret of Bay 5B (A&E)
Tape 34: Inspector Morse: Dead on Time/Dalziel & Pascoe: Deadheads/Silent Witness: Cease Upon the Midnight (A&E)
Tape 35: Fuzz (1972 film w/ Burt Reynolds, taped off TBS in 1999) and Start the Revolution Without Me (taped off AMC)
Tape 36: Dalziel & Pascoe: Recalled to Life (taped off A&E 2000). After this there's about 15 min. of an episode of A&E Top 10, followed by several episodes of Dark Shadows (reruns, taped off Sci-Fi around 1996)
Tape 37: Shadow Chasers (off Encore Mystery in the late 90s)/The Big Lebowski (taped off Showtime around 1999) and Small Vices (taped off A&E)
Tape 38: Dalziel & Pascoe: Bones and Silence/Inspector Morse: Twilight of the Gods/A Touch of Frost: One Man's Meat (A&E)
Tape 39: Inspector Morse: Day of The Devil/Touch of Frost: Appendix Man/Dalziel & Pascoe: The Wood Beyond/Touch of Frost: Private Lives (A&E)
Tape 40: Touch of Frost: Care & Protection/Pale Horse/Midsummer Murders (A&E, but not sure about the other two)
Tape 41: Strange Luck episodes (off Fox, WFXR 27 Roanoke, VA 1995-96)
Tape 42: Cracker: The Madwoman in the Attic/Touch of Frost: Widows & Orphans/Dalziel & Pascoe: A Clubbable Woman (A&E)
Tape 44: Rebecca of Stonybrook Farm/Born to Run etc (unknown)
Tape 45/47: tapes I recorded, Royal Wedding 2011 and Oprah's finale
Tape 46: Spitfire/Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom (HBO/unknown)
Tape 48/49: Kingdome implosion/SNL

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

A couple of weeks ago I went to one of the local flea markets and found a tape containing the last three parts of the ABC miniseries North and South: Book II from May 1986. They were recorded from WDHO (now WNWO) Channel 24 in Toledo (now an NBC affiliate) and contained the original commercials.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I too know a flea market where many of these things are available.

Unfortunately those vendors LEAVE THEM OUT BAKING IN THE HOT SUN for hours on end
(along with the vinyl records they are trying to sell) :(

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I took back the SNL VHS and another tape with three movies on it with no ads or any bumpers, etc. (maybe a copy of the rental VHSs?) I got five blanks today from the same record store where the hoarder's lot was.

Tape 1: A TDK tape with the A&E special Las Vegas: Gamble in the Desert, originally aired in 1996, taped in the spring of 1998 with commercials.
Tape 2: A BASF T-160 with episodes of Dinosaurs (ABC sitcom) from the early 1990s. Except for one partial break with ads for Kix and Diet Coke, it has no commercials , so I will be taking it back.
Tape 3: A TDK HS with 9/11 coverage from ABC (KOMO-TV 4 in Seattle) and CNN. Starts near the first tower collapse.
Tape 4: A Maxell S-VHS with episodes of the BBC sitcom called Red Dwarf, taped off KCTS 9 in the late 90s. PBS programming is not my thing, and the tape is VERY distorted, so this is going back as well.
Tape 5: A Fuji, supposably with X-Files, but taped over with one episode of Tripping The Rift off Sci-Fi (no ads), Lost in Translation with Bill Murray (no ads), motorcycle racing off the Speed Channel (2004, with original commercials), a few minutes of Inside the Nextel Cup (also Speed), then another motorcycle race (again, Speed, with commercials, 2004)

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Anyone ever spot any specific tapes at any flea markets and not pick them up then regret it later? Seems to happen to me a lot. This usually happens to me because A) I only have so much money in my wallet when I go to these things, and B) these tapes I'm buying are already starting to fill up my bedroom shelves.

At an indoor flea market I went to early this year, one of the vendors had a HUGE lot of VHS tapes (mostly homemade!) It was the same guy I bought the tapes of MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday and all the Zorro episodes from, but there were numerous others. I remember one of the tapes had "Mr. Bean" written on the label (BBC sitcom presumably recorded from PBS, probably WVIZ in Cleveland). Most of the rest had movie titles written on the labels. The only specific one of those tapes I seem to remember had "Dances with Wolves" and two other movies on the label, but there were a lot of others. That may have only been the tip of the iceberg though.

More recently, at another flea market, a couple had a tent set up with their merchandise (mostly VHS tapes, cassette tapes, CDs, and records). This was where I got the tapes of Gilmore Girls, Will & Grace, MTV music videos, Legends of Laughter, and the tape of "Casper," "101 Dalmatians," and "Get Shorty." They had two other homemade tapes that had movie titles like "Lethal Weapon 2," "The Sting," and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" written on the labels, but I didn't buy those.

At the garage sale where I bought the two tapes of Cleveland Browns games and two tapes of movies ("Firewalker" and "The Goonies"), the guy who sold them actually had two big boxes of homemade VHS tapes which he said were all recorded from TV. Most of the tapes had movie titles on the labels, but there were also several tapes that looked like they had more Browns games on them. One of those also had "Total Request Live" written on the label, but I think that was crossed out, which hinted that it may have been taped over with one of those games. The guy also had a smaller box of Betamax tapes that he said contained episodes of the CBS show Tour of Duty, but I don't have a Betamax VCR. He said I could actually buy both of the VHS boxes for $10, but I opted to only buy four of the tapes for 50 cents each.

Most recently, at another flea market, one of the regular vendors has another big lot of VHS tapes, and while I did pick up a tape containing the movies "Summer Rental" and "In Harm's Way" from him, another homemade tape had "Blue's Clues" written on the label, which would have been nice mainly for the classic Nickelodeon/Nick Jr. commercials from my childhood that may have been on it, but I didn't get it. He also had a tape with "Small Soldiers" written on the label, but I already have that movie on retail VHS. Another vendor also had a few homemade tapes with movie titles on the labels. This was the guy I bought the tape of "Under Siege" and "The Westerner" from, but he also had two tapes containing such movies as "Tommy Boy" and "Happy Gilmore," along with other titles, but I already have those two movies on DVD or retail VHS. He also had an unlabeled tape, but I tend to shy away from tapes that don't have labels. Another vendor, the guy I bought the tape of KTLA movies ("The Viking Queen" and "Knights of the Round Table") and the '92 Presidential Debate from, had another tape in which the label hinted of the presence of a WJW Big Chuck and Lil John airing of the movie "Christine" and episodes of Babewatch, a bikini contest show (presumably taped from WAX/WAOH in Akron). If anything, I would have wanted to pick up the latter tape for the Big Chuck and Lil John show because those guys are always good for a laugh.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I finally got another batch of tapes!! Bought a lot off eBay (and asked the seller about particular tapes) and got some good stuff! Eighteen tapes came to my door, and here's whats on them. I haven't even viewed 20 min of any of these tapes.

Tape 52: Moses (biblical TNT original movie, taped in 1996), an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess, an episode of Hercules: The Incredible Journeys, and two episodes of Cops (from mid 1990s).
Tape 53: The Adventures of Robin Hood (probably 1938 version), The Savage Bees (1976 TV movie), and Hey Abbott (1978), all movies
Tape 54: An episode of the Simpsons (Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment, taped off Fox 2/7/91), an episode of the short-lived comedy Babes (with Susan Peretz, taped 2/7/91), an episode of Family Matters (Life of The Party, 2/8/91) and The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday (a 1976 movie).

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

more tapes

Tape 57: Three movies, Rhinestone (1984, Sylvester Stallone), On Golden Pond (1981, Katherine Hepburn) and Jewel of the Nile (1985, Michael Douglas), not sure where taped off of
Tape 58: The TV movie Perry Mason: The Case of the Musical Murder (off WBIR 10 Knoxville, TN, 1989), an episode of Roseanne (probably off WATE-TV6, haven't checked yet, and the movie version of Island of the Blue Dolphins
Tape 59: Roxanne-The Prize Pulitzer (off NBC, 1989), Class Cruise (1989 TV movie), and False Witness (another TV movie).
Tape 60: Batman (the original 1966 movie, not the '89 version), taped off WGN-TV9 Chicago on Fri., July 28th, 1989 (it has a partial Illinois Lottery drawing that says in big letters JULY 28, 1989), as well as several episodes of the Batman TV series (from the 60s, but says 8/7/89, 8/9/89, etc. on the labels).
Tape 61: Wake of the Red Witch (1948 movie, off unknown channel but has an IN STEREO graphic at the beginning, says 1989 at the end), Fighting Back: Life of Rocky Bleire (a movie taped off of the "Eight O'Clock Movie" on WKBD-TV50 Detroit, MI) and the movie Bill Cosby-Himself.
Tape 62: Starts with a travelogue video of Venezuela (I do NOT know why, it's 20 min. in length), then cuts to Four Days in November, a documentary about the Kennedy assassination taped in 1988 off WJBK-TV2 Detroit (CBS), then the movie Spies, Lies and N* (don't want to get in trouble) Thighs (TV movie?) then an episode of Murder, She Wrote probably off WJBK as well but I haven't checked. Oldest tape I've found in the lot.
Tape 63: Five Blondie comedy movies, Blondie Goes to College, Blondie's Blessed Event, Blondie for Victory, Blondie's Holiday and Blondie's In The Dough, taped off an unknown source.
Tape 64 and 65: Two tapes, and 11 hours of Beavis & Butthead episodes taped off MTV (one is dated 11/21/95).
Tape 66: Several episodes of the old 1960s Batman TV series, taped off the Family Channel around 1989 or 1990.
Some parts of this tape have commercials, while others don't or have partial cut-off breaks.
Tape 67: Movies; Neverending Story, Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead, Summer of My German Soldier and something written "Johnny Appleseed" but I'm not sure if it's Tall Tales & Legends, or another show. Question: Were the episodes of Tall Tales & Legends (Showtime) 1 hour long?
Tape 68: Come Back Little Sheba, Witness (Harrison Ford) and Rear Window, all movies.
Tape 69: I Married A Witch, Zachariah, M*A*S*H (theatrical version) and Ma & Pa Kettle on Vacation, all taped off AMC with no commercials.

Forgot to say for Tape 54, the Simpsons and Babes episodes were taped off WKCH Fox 43 in Knoxville, TN, Family Matters off WATE-TV6 Knoxville. For Tape 52, Xena and Hercules were taped off the same station after it switched calls from WKCH to WTNZ.

Scott: I have Folks! on a pre-recorded VHS, but it's in storage. I've got TWENTY more tapes coming in from Omaha, Nebraska, so hopefully I find some goodies taped off KMTV 3, WOWT 6, KETV 7 or KPTM 42 (Big Four affiliates).

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Got my tapes today. Lots of labels that say "Fox Kids" (one tape had an ad with a KXVO 15 promo from 2000 or so) and "WB Kids", and the tapes mostly look late 90s-early 2000s, but I am finding a tape with the Fox special "When Animals Attack" from 1996 with commercials. Will be back later to describe more detail.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Looks like I got a little disappointed with my purchases, most tapes were cartoons (Kids WB, Adult Swim, etc.) One tape had UFC Wrestling from 2007 taped off Spike TV, and one tape has Tiny Toons on it, but I've looked back 20 minutes or more and found nothing but static until an episode kicks in taped off KPTM 42 Omaha in 1990. Maybe they WILL go to the thrift store/flea market after all. Only good tape I've found was the When Animals Attack tape (off KPTM), that tape also had an episode of the Simpsons. I haven't completely checked the tape yet.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

At a self storage in downtown Everett, WA (one of the most boring jobs of my life), I generally babysitted the front desk and passed the time away between phone calls, general office work inquiries and occasional assistance with watching daytime TV and reading. This was in 1997 and the computer in the office was an old DOS behemoth. Business internet was still dial-up, very rare and largely unneeded for our purposes then. I could have REALLY used it then.

But sometimes a renter would skip out on his/her bill and I'd have to cut their locks and replace them with red colored locks and a notice to see the office. If their bills were still unpaid (after exhausting and documenting every effort to contact/negotiate with the renter), then everything in their unit (aside from personal effects, photos and papers) would have to go up for auction to recoup the debt on the storage bill.

Since myself and the other employees there had full run of the place (the owner only showed up once a week to collect the rent), we'd have to go into these abandoned/unpaid storage units to inventory and sort everything in them and arranged for the auction house to come and pick up furniture. Or anything left behind as we usually plundered everything in there first (I upgraded nearly everything I had within the first few months of working there.)

The stuff people actually leave behind will AMAZE you.

I once found an unlabeled video tape that had homemade hardcore amateur porn on it. [EDIT]

[EDIT-offensive content]

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I'd love to go into a storage and find vintage furniture, glassware, and about a hundred blank VHS tapes with TV shows on them (even though it's of not much value)

The tape with hardcore content-I once found a tape with a movie taped off Showtime many years ago, and after that, porn! I took it RIGHT BACK...
To find these wonderful goodies, start searching little dumpy thrift stores (not Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul, but little dumpy ones that have no one checking the shelves...) and flea markets, as well as craigslist, etc. From the mostly cartoon lot I was sharing, I also found a tape with the premiere of Star Trek Voyager on it from 1995.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I found five more tapes at another flea market last weekend. Here's what I found on them:

TAPE 2: 2002 Academy Awards Live from the Red Carpet special (taped on 3/24/2002 from E!, some ad breaks included, others cut out) and most of the Oscars ceremony itself (taped from WEWS in Cleveland with no ads)

TAPE 4: Game 3 of the 1995 World Series (Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Indians) taped on 10/24/1995 from WKYC in Cleveland with ads, also includes last few minutes of Entertainment Tonight prior to the game, Channel 3 News broadcast after the game also with ads (Judd Hambrick, Dawn Stensland, Amy Hasten, and Jim Donovan), and first half of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno with ads

TAPE 5: Part one of Intensity (1997) based on Dean Koontz's novel, taped on 8/5/1997 from WJW in Cleveland with ads also including the first three minutes of Fox 8 News at 10 (Tim Taylor and Wilma Smith)

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Never thought I'd be back in this thread, but here it goes:

Plus a show called "Comedy Break" and ends with first 10 mins of INN from 1986
  • TV Movie, "Red River" with James Arness along with WCBS-TV Channel 2 News with Reggie Harris and Jane Velez-Mitchell (yes, that one!) plus taped over Spring Training Braves Baseball from WTBS and taped over George Michael Sports Machine
  • Evergreen TV Movie along with News 4 NY and Tonight Show with guest-host Jay Leno and Dave Barry
  • Perry Mason TV Movie from 1992 off WPTV

Nice finds! How did you find all of that WNBC/WCBS stuff, since you're 1000+ mi S? I have a Perry Mason movie, "The Case of the Musical Murder" from 1989, off of WBIR-TV10 in Knoxville, TN. It does have commercials, and an episode of Roseanne (off WATE 6) follows it.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I went to the local Buck or Two several weeks ago and found a lot of good self-made blank VHS tapes. Here are some good finds I came across at that store:

* I found a tape that contained the entire miniseries of "Fresno" starring Carol Burnett and Dabney Coleman. Some of the scenes are missing, but does contain the original commercials. It was recorded off of WBIR-TV10 in Knoxville and also includes a local newsbreak with Ken Schwall.

* I also found a tape that contained most of the Inaguration of George Bush as President of the United States that aired on NBC in 1989. The program does contain at least some original commercials and local commercials. It was recorded off of WBIR-TV10 and contains a quick ID slide featuring a list of ten-watt translators that simulcasted WBIR at the time. One of them was W04BM which operated on channel 4 from La Follette, Tennessee.

* I also found a tape that contained clips of programs that aired on CBS during a Sunday night sometime in 1988 or 1989. The programs shown were an episode of "Murder, She Wrote" and the CBS Sunday Night Movie presentation of "Cocoon". It contains some commercials, network promos, and local commercials. It was recorded off WTVK-TV26 at the time they were affiliated with CBS.

* I even found a tape that contained a special entitled "An All-Star Party for Carol Burnett" which aired on December 5th, 1982 via the CBS television network. The program contains all of the original commercials, network promos, and local commercials. It was recorded off KNXT-TV2 in Los Angeles and even includes the first several minutes of "Circus of the Stars" which aired on the same night.
