Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Great finds! I never see self-made VHS tapes anymore up here at the thrift stores, but could that be because Goodwill, St. Vincent won't take any? I actually saw one on Thursday at the St. Vincent in Renton, with no price tag, and it had a label that said "It's A Wonderful Life", "Under the Umbrella Tree" (Disney Channel show) and Full House, but can anyone say, "taped over by inapporiate content"? It had no box, I left it there.

Nice finds! How did you find all of that WNBC/WCBS stuff, since you're 1000+ mi S? I have a Perry Mason movie, "The Case of the Musical Murder" from 1989, off of WBIR-TV10 in Knoxville, TN. It does have commercials, and an episode of Roseanne (off WATE 6) follows it.

Well it was a matter of looking at the tape itself based on the label, as well as scanning the tapes to see if there was any...you know...objectionable content.

I'm just not the person that buys tapes at thrift stores. I don't know if it was taped over, but sometimes it can be (imagine buying a tape with porn instead of a movie). I don't take those chances. I usually buy lots from eBay and craigslist, because I can ask the seller and trust the seller. I don't know who brought in that tape, but it could have been taped over (it had no box). I'm trying not to lie.

I used to do that also, but again it's actually a wild card when it comes to blank tapes at thrift stores. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Not so, this week.

To be honest, its more harder than it looks. Tried to find used VHS tapes on eBay, specifically more episodes of "Star Search". Guess its all a matter on how you look.

TAPE 2: Four episodes of All in the Family (taped from TV Land's All in the Family 35th Anniversary Marathon on 1/15/2006 with ads)

TAPE 3: Intro and small part of "Fatal Deception: Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald" (taped from NBC [presumably WKYC in Cleveland] on 11/15/1993); most of "A Family of Strangers" (taped from WJW in Cleveland on 2/21/1993 with ads, including the first few minutes of Newscenter 8 at 11:00 with Dave Buckel and Kelly O'Donnell)

TAPE 4: Three episodes of NYPD Blue (two without ads, one with ads and the start of a Forensic Files episode, taped from Court TV in March 2006); last few minutes of "The Jerk" (1979) taped from AMC sometime in 2006 with no ads; last few minutes of "Wall Street" (1987) taped from Bravo sometime in 2006 with no ads

TAPE 5: Taken parts 7, 8 and 9 (Sci-Fi Channel miniseries taped on December 10, 11, 12, 2002 with ads)

I'm a bit late on this one, but I found six more tapes at one of our local flea markets a couple of weekends ago. Here's the rundown of what I found:

TAPE 1: 2/11/2002 WEWS News Channel 5 at Noon newscast (Brad Harvey, Danita Harris, and Mark Johnson), episodes of Port Charles, All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, and part of Oprah from that afternoon, all w/c; last 30 minutes of another GH episode from another day in February 2002 on WEWS with ads; last 45 minutes of a broadcast of Mother Angelica Live on EWTN sometime in 2000, some promos followed

TAPE 2: Small part of "The Nutty Professor" (1996) taped from WJW in Cleveland in March 1999 with some ads; "Mr. Roberts" (1955) taped from AMC in March 1999, no promos or bumpers; part of "The 'Burbs" (1989) taped from WUAB in Cleveland in March 1999 with ads; most of "Visit to a Small Planet" (1960), followed by the first 15 minutes of an episode of Wild Things taped from WBNX in Akron in March 1999 with ads; first 20 minutes of an episode of General Hospital taped from WEWS in December 1997 with ads

TAPE 3: Full episode of One Life to Live and partial episode of General Hospital taped in August 2002 (strange recording because whoever taped this switched back and forth from WEWS in Cleveland to WTVG in Toledo from segment to segment, few ads were included); last 15 minutes of another GH episode and first 10 minutes of an episode of the Rosie O'Donnell Show taped from WTVG in July 2002 with ads; last 10 minutes or so of a History Channel documentary called Founding Fathers taped sometime in summer 2001 with some ads; first 10 minutes or so of an episode of American Eats: History on a Bun taped from the History Channel sometime in summer 2001 with some ads

TAPE 4: Reruns of M*A*S*H, NewsRadio, and The Nanny taped from WJW in November 1999 with ads; most of "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992) taped from WJW on 11/25/1997 with ads and first five minutes of Fox 8 News at Ten (Tim Taylor and Wilma Smith)

TAPE 5: "Fire Down Below" (1997), this one looks like it was copied from a rental VHS, as the opening previews were included, but at the end of the tape is most of an episode of the Adventures of Superman and most of an episode of The New Monkees, both taped from WOIO in Cleveland sometime in November 1987 with ads

TAPE 6: All four parts of the Stephen King miniseries "The Stand" taped from WEWS on May 8, 9, 11 and 12, 1994 with ads and News Channel 5 at 11:00 openings from all but one evening

TAPE 1: Three Men and a Baby (1987) and When Harry Met Sally (1989) recorded from the Movie Channel in July 1990, a 17-minute promo block separates the two films

TAPE 2: Cry Freedom (1987) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1989 (includes a three-minute intermission in the middle of the film of nothing but a title slide, a rather strange find); Gunga Din (1939) taped from WOIO in Cleveland in April 1990 with ads, ends with an Entertainment Time-Out segment with Don Stotter on the movie I Love You to Death; first half of some French documentary film on Cinemax taped circa 1989 with Cinemax Imports intro (I'll have to look at the tape again to find out the movie title in English)

TAPE 3: Return to Me (2000) taped from iN Demand Pay-Per-View with iN Demand Feature Presentation intro

TAPE 4: Last 15 minutes of Nightline special "The Gulf War: Untold Stories" taped from WEWS in Cleveland on 1/10/1992 with ads, right afterward is part one of Cleopatra (1963) with ads, then part two of Cleopatra from the next night with ads

TAPE 1: Catholic Diocese of Cleveland TV Mass from 1/9/2005 taped from WJW in Cleveland; last few minutes of In a Stranger's Hand (1991) taped from Lifetime sometime in 2002; The Babysitter (1995) taped from Lifetime in July 2002 with ads, leads up to the first few minutes of Body Language (1992); first ten minutes of an episode of The Young and the Restless taped from WOIO in May 2001 with a few ads before the tape runs out

TAPE 2: Miscellaneous Animal Planet shows (Emergency Vets, A Pet Story, The Jeff Corwin Experience, Animal Cops Detroit, The Crocodile Hunter, Good Dog U, K-9 to 5, and The Planet's Funniest Animals) taped in July 2004, most shows had commercials on them, including some local ads from Nashville broadcast through Comcast

Just one tape at this one: Two incomplete episodes of Dancing with the Stars taped from WEWS, one from 11/27/2007 with ads and leading up to the start of News Channel 5 at 11:00 (Ted Henry and Danita Harris), the other from 10/30/2007 and including most of the day's episode of Boston Legal, also with ads

TAPE 1: The American Experience broadcast "The Bombing of Germany" taped from WOSU in Columbus on 2/8/2010; episode of WWII in HD (History Channel miniseries from 2009) taped in February 2010 with ads

TAPE 2: This one was rather disappointing (but then again, so was the last one given how recently it was recorded): This one had only two Looney Tunes cartoons (one Bugs Bunny cartoon and one Road Runner cartoon) taped from ABC circa 1997, but that was all that was on the tape

TAPE 3: Thunder Alley (1967) taped from Speedvision's Lost Drive In with Bruce Dern in June 1999 with ads

TAPE 4: Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) another Speedvision Lost Drive In presentation taped in April 1999 with ads

Things happen. I found that one REALLY....Umm....Interesting tape whilst working at the self-storage. But it goes to show you never can tell. Although I'm 99% sure you WON'T find stuff like this in your typical Goodwill bag, but who knows? Who pre-screens these things? All I'm saying it HAS happened. I could have donated this all to Goodwill and who knows who could have found it? Maybe YOU? But for the most part, people LABEL these things and if the label read anything.....interesting, it would have gotten tossed or destroyed. But for the most part, it's anything goes in an unlabeled (presumably) blank video tape. You take your chances.

I went to a yard sale right down the street from me today, and I did find one single 8-hour tape with no label. I asked the man what was on it, and he said not to worry about it and they can just throw it away. I told him I wanted it, and he sold it to me for 25¢. Anyway. here's what was on the tape:

Yeah, I've actually found tapes of recordings that recent at garage sales and flea markets recently. I found one tape that started out with a short clip of a History Channel documentary that looked like it was taped sometime in the late '90s or early 2000s, but the rest of it got taped over with a WOSU broadcast of The American Experience and a History Channel special called WWII in HD. Both were recorded in February 2010. I also found a tape of episodes of Dancing with the Stars and half an episode of Boston Legal taped from WEWS in 2007. And then I also found another tape that had a USA presentation of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End that aired in October 2009, but there were also remnants of some '90s recordings after the movie, specifically TBN programs.

I usually don't buy tapes that don't have labels on them, although I do see them around at flea market vendors' tables sometimes. I like to have a rough idea of what's on the tapes, even though what's on the label could have easily been taped over with other content.

TAPE 3: Some Like It Hot (1959) taped from TBS in January 1991 with ads, the recording starts with the last few minutes of the 48th Annual Golden Globe Awards which was simulcast from NBC; Cat Ballou (1965) taped from Showtime in January 1991; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) taped from unknown pay TV channel

TAPE 4: My Fair Lady (1964) taped from HBO circa 1989; Oklahoma (1955) taped from unknown pay TV channel (well, most of it anyway, My Fair Lady was taped in SLP speed, but Oklahoma was taped in SP speed, so that's why the latter movie is incomplete)

A bought a part of a two piece converter that the old rogers cable system used to use. $5 for the box that says Wait, Data Error, Okay. At the Blanco and 410 Goodwill. I took it apart, and my mom probably threw it out, I didn't pack it on my move to Houston.

I still have the $8 8-Track Recorder that needs new belts from there. It also eats tapes.

I'm glad you are continuing to find new tapes. For now, I have lost a bit of interest in that stuff, mostly because they go so high on eBay [saw a lot of 10 home-recorded tapes, used, w/ commercials, for $30 + shipping!!!].

Speaking of WCVB, I actually once had a tape with some WCVB content from 2006 on it. When my parents and I went on vacation in Plymouth in July 2006, the house we rented had a VCR, and my mom actually brought a blank tape with us so she could record General Hospital while we were out of the house. I remember the tape had a couple of severe weather cut-ins from NewsCenter 5 that were shown before GH. Unfortunately, she eventually taped over the WCVB stuff with more of her soaps recorded locally in our hometown in Ohio, which I eventually taped over with episodes of the Steve Wilkos Show in 2009. Kind of stinks that we don't have that footage anymore, even though the content wasn't that old anyway.

I remember she also did something similar when we went on vacation in rural Northern Pennsylvania (near the New York state line) in the summer of 2002. The house we rented there also had a VCR, and one day she actually taped the soaps she watches (Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live and General Hospital). She eventually erased the WGRZ and WKBW content that was on there though, including the WGRZ noon newscast shown before DOOL. :(

While on vacation with my family in Upstate New York near Lake Ontario last week, I did some more treasure hunting at an indoor flea market in Rochester. You wouldn't believe how many VHS tapes and other media were stocked on the shelves there! Of course most of them were prerecorded tapes, but there was also a HUGE amount of home-recorded tapes there, probably more than I've ever seen in a flea market before! I managed to pick up eight while I was there. Here's the rundown of what I found on them...

TAPE 1 (8 hours): Episodes of Men in Black and Max Steel taped from WRWB in Rochester with ads; two episodes of The Incurable Collector taped from A&E with ads; some short clips from episodes of A Wedding Story and A Makeover Story taped from TLC with a few ads; an episode of Clueless taped from WGN Superstation with ads; an episode of Oprah (with guest Tyra Banks) taped from WOKR in Rochester with ads; half of an episode of The View (with guest Bridget Fonda) taped from WOKR with ads; part of an episode of Sister Sister taped from WRWB with a few ads; episode of Entertainment Tonight taped from WROC in Rochester with ads; short part of an episode of Family Matters taped from WGN Superstation with a few ads; and most of the movie Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) taped from AMC--all of these were recorded between June and July 2001

TAPE 2: Sleeping with the Enemy (1991) taped from HBO in January 1992 with promos before the movie

TAPE 4: Super Bowl XXIV from 1/28/1990 taped from WUSA in Washington D.C. with no ads

TAPE 5: Most of Con Air (1997), an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway, broadcasts of WOKR News Source 13 at 11:00 (with Norma Holland and Peter Robbins) and Nightline, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, two infomercials, and half of an episode of The Roseanne Show (the talk show) all taped on July 5-6, 2000 with ads

TAPE 6: Evita (1996) and Turbulence (1997) taped from Viewer's Choice Pay-Per-View in 1997, promos after the second movie were found

TAPE 7: Episodes of The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, As the World Turns, and Guiding Light taped from WROC on 12/20/1994 with ads; half of an episode of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (opening segment and interview and performance by Kenny G) taped from WHEC in Rochester on 12/21/1994 with a partial ad break; Kathie Lee: Looking for Christmas (CBS Christmas Special) taped from WROC on 12/21/1994 with ads; second half of an episode of Due South and first ten minutes of an episode of Chicago Hope taped from WROC on 12/19/1994 with ads

TAPE 8: Scooby-Doo and Johnny Bravo (one episode each) taped from Cartoon Network in February 2001 with ads

As I said before though, there was a huge amount of other home-recorded tapes I saw on the shelves that I didn't pick up, mostly with movie titles written on the labels. The only non-movie title I recall seeing on a tape label that I didn't buy from there was Ken Burns' Civil War miniseries from PBS (supposedly on two different tapes found that were Scotch-taped together in their cases). I also saw a pretty good number of Betamax tapes there. You don't see those being sold at flea markets too much anymore.

Finally, I got some more tapes, from a store in Everett, WA. Just starting to look!

Tape 1-episode of Roseanne [11/10/1992] taped off KOMO 4 with commercials, an episode of Coach from the same night, part of an episode of Going to Extremes, then 20 min of an unknown Merryl Streep movie [she is singing at the end when the credits are rolling] taped off Showtime in late 1992 with intermission promos, followed by Emmanuel Around the World [1977] also taped off Showtime. Will look at the rest later. SLP mode.

Tape 2-the miniseries Nightmare Years, with both parts [1989]. LP mode.

Tape 3-an episode of Personal FX-The Collectables Show from 1995, then two episodes of Law and Order from early 2005.

Tape 4-the movie "Some Time Last Year" taped off Showtime sometime in the mid 1980s with a split-second of a PG bumper rating and the Showtime logo at the beginning. SP mode.

Did get a fifth tape that was labeled "All of the Family"-and had nine episodes labeled on it, but the person erased everything on the tape. To the recycling bin it goes!
