Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores
Episode #5.
Episode #5.
I saw a couple of episodes of that PBS "Television" documentary in my TV As Pop Culture class my junior year of college.crainbebo said:I got a MASSIVE load of blank tapes today from Everett. Some AWESOME stuff found! Here they are.
Tape 1 - five episodes of Star Trek: TNG, including the episode "Heart of Glory" from 1988, taped off both KVOS-TV Bellingham and KCPQ 13 Tacoma around 1990 with ads. There is a piece of paper inside with the episode listings.
Tape 2 - several M*A*S*H reruns taped off KSTW (back when it was called KSTWashington in the WA/BC superstation days) around 1989 with ads included. The tape looked older than that - at first I thought it was going to be earlier!
Tape 3 - My oldest blank tape YET!! The movie "On the Town" with Gene Kelly taped off WFLD 32 Chicago around April of 1983 with ads!! (based off a Pontiac Chicagoland ad with "take stock by April 30" mention and mention of the '83 Firebirds)
Tape 4 - A few hours of the "Lonesome Dove" miniseries originally broadcast on CBS in 1989, but this is a TNT rerun from 1995 (based on ads and bumpers). Includes all commercials.
Tape 5 - A tape of the the "Met" PBS opera program with a Don Giovanni opera performance, taped in 1990 off KCTS 9 Seattle, including promos after the show. Also includes an episode of the documentary "Television" with Edwin Newman also off KCTS and produced by KCET and WNET. This episode is part one of two about TV news and includes a feature on the JFK assassination.
Tape 6 - The movie "South Central" (1992) and "Sugar Hill" (1994) taped off an unknown channel without commercials.
Tape 7 - The movies "The Outlaw Josey Wales", "Hang 'Em High" and "Joe Kid" taped off unknown channel without commercials.
Tape 8 - The movies "Braddock: Missing in Action III" and "Red Sonja" taped off unknown channel without commercials.
Don't worry, I've got eight more tapes coming in tomorrow from Florida! I'll tell you what they are once I get them.

Tape 1 - "Airplane II" and "Private School", both '80s movies, taped off an unknown channel (Airplane II) and HBO (Private School) without any promos.
Tape 2 - "The Final Option" [1982] taped off HBO with promos before the movie (from around late 1984), "Krull" [1983] taped off HBO also around late 1984 with promos before the movie, the cartoon musical "Stanley the Ugly Duckling" from 1982, taped from the HBO Family Showcase in 1984, and an episode of Charlie's Angels taped off WOFL-TV 35 Orlando (when they were IND) back in 1984 with ads.
Tape 3 - "Space Riders" [1984], "Table for Five" [1983] and "Children of the Corn" [1984] taped off HBO in both 1984 and 1985 with promos before the movies.
Does the Quincy episode have ads?
Tape 4 - "The Ski Bum" [1971] taped off USA around 1984, commercials cut out, and the Highway to Heaven episode "To Touch the Moon" taped off WESH-TV 2 Daytona Beach on 9/26/1984 with all ads included, plus an episode of Quincy taped off WOFL in 1984 (syndicated repeat).
Tape 5 - "Revenge of the Ninja" [1982] taped off HBO around 1984.
Tape 6 - "Story of Jacob and Joseph" taped off WMOD 43 Melbourne, FL around 1985 without commercials. Unfortunately, not only was WMOD a poor signal, but this tape is BLANK for the remaining 4.5 hours.
Tape 7 - "The Promise" [1979] and Sakharov [1984] taped off HBO in 1984 with promos before the movie.
Tape 8 - The first two "Highway to Heaven" episodes, taped off WESH in September 1984 with ads; an episode of Night Gallery taped off WMOD with ads; an episode of "Twilight Zone" taped off WMOD with ads; and an episode of Kojak taped off WMOD with ads, all were in 1984.

crainbebo said:Self-made means the tapes were not store-bought tapes, and were recorded off a home-based TV. I.E. if you find some movies on VHS that have HBO promos on them, that means that they were home-recorded movie tapes, and not store-bought (with previews, FBI warnings, etc.)
In Houston, I'd check online for flea markets and maybe some very local thrift stores. I.E. stores that are not owned by a large organization (like Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul etc). Many of those "local" thrift stores stock everything, and don't check for home-recorded material. I've seen many T-120 VHS tapes, used with recordings, while going through thrift stores (but I've never bought any from a thrift store).

The one tape of Super Bowl XXV I got a couple of months ago had a similar problem. I played it back for about a minute during Hank Williams Jr.'s theme song at the beginning, then tried rewinding it, but when I did that, my VCR ejected the tape and shut off by itself. Turns out the inside of that tape was very dusty. Unfortunately I'm kind of reluctant to try to play that tape again because I'm afraid of damaging my VCR.crainbebo said:I keep finding my tapes at a local record store up in Everett. The owner sells TONS of VHS tapes, and at any given time boxes are in the store, full of VHS, as high as the ceiling (10 feet!) Most of the time I look through the boxes for tapes that are interesting. The "On the Town" Gene Kelly tape from 1983 off WFLD was in a box that was easy to dig through (on top!) The no-commercial "Missing in Action III" tape - well, not so much. Had to go through a few boxes to get that. Seems like that box had a couple other movie tapes, and then tons of (old!) tapes that someone recorded gameplays of video games over. (i.e. hooked up the VCR to the PlayStation or XBOX and let it run)
It was also easy to find the M*A*S*H and Star Trek tapes, as they were in a pile right on top. For some reason however, the M*A*S*H tape has #1: been reduced to "some commercials" as some episodes have ads cut out, and #2: has a fast forward problem. When I fast forward through, when taking it out the tape looks like it was ate up bad. When I carefully place the tape back in it's area, it works fine until I click FF. Wonder what the issue is there...no other tapes I have had that problem.

Scott2011 said:Picked up some more VHS tapes a couple of weekends ago. Here's what I found on them:
TAPE 1: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) taped from Showtime circa 1992

TAPE 3: This one was basically a hodgepodge of children's shows taped between December 1993 and March 1994: Super Mario Bros. Super Show on the Family Channel; The Bugs Bunny Show on TBS; Popeye on the Family Channel; Muppet Babies, David the Gnome, and Eureka's Castle on Nick Jr.; Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs on WPGH in Pittsburgh; and two episodes of Tom and Jerry Kids, one taped from WWCP in Johnstown, PA, the other taped from WPGH...some of these shows included the commercials, but most did not
TAPE 4: Last 30 minutes of Blue Chips (1994) and all of You've Got Mail (1998) taped from Cinemax in August 2000 with an 11-minute promo block in between the two movies
TAPE 5: The Wizard of Oz (1939) and CBS special The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 50 Years of Magic taped from WJW on 2/28/1990 minus ads except for a Ronald McDonald Children's Charities ad and a CBS Read More About It PSA with Angela Lansbury after the special; Love Story (1970) taped from the Movie Channel circa 1990
TAPE 6: Donahue episode (Gloria Pitzer and her replicas of famous recipes, the recording actually starts about six minutes into the show) taped from WKYC in April 1993 with ads and first three minutes of Channel 3 News at 6; most of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation taped from WUAB on 10/18/1992 minus ads; The Texan Meets Calamity Jane (1950) taped from the Movie Channel in July 1992 with promos before the movie
TAPE 7: The Woman in Green (1945) unknown if this was taped from premium cable or copied from a rental tape
TAPE 8: Angels in the Outfield (1951), The Winning Team (1952), and Clash By Night (1952) taped from TCM circa 2000 with promos shown in between the first two movies and Robert Osborne's opening and closing factoids before and after each movie
TAPE 9: A&E Biography of Princess Diana taped on 1/3/2002 minus ads, hosted by Harry Smith; Christmas in July (1940) taped from TCM in January 2002 with opening and closing segments with Robert Osborne
TAPE 10: Metropolis (1927) taped from TCM in February 2003 with Robert Osborne's segments before and after the movie; A&E Biography of Humphrey Bogart taped in February 2003 minus ads, hosted by Bridget Fonda; most of The Mummy (1932) with Osborne's closing and TCM promos followed by The Raven (1935)
TAPE 11: Broadcast of The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet taped from WJW on 5/1/2008 with ads and first five minutes of That's Life with Robin Swoboda (local program); 20/20 special on Steve Irwin taped from WEWS on 9/27/2006 with ads; Dateline NBC broadcast (To Catch a Predator investigation in Petaluma, California) taped from WKYC on 10/6/2006 with ads; pilot episode of Make Me Famous, Make Me Rich (short-lived Ohio Lottery game show) taped from WEWS on 10/7/2006 with ads and Ohio Lottery drawing with Cherie McClain; two-hour Dateline NBC broadcast taped from WKYC on 10/7/2006 with ads; last 30 minutes of another Dateline NBC taped from WKYC on 1/13/2006 with ads
I also picked up a tape that was supposed to have several episodes of The A-Team and was dated "2/28/2000," but when I played it, all I saw was a blank screen, even though the memory counter on my VCR was still running, so unfortunately, that one turned out to be a rip-off. I'm curious if anyone happens to know what cable network aired A-Team reruns in 2000.
