By the way, if any of you have old telecasts of Star Search with Ed McMahon? Let me know in this thread!

Someday, and I think *soon*, used VHS tapes and recorders will demand quite a high price in the used market. There are already titles of releases that have had their title's rights sold and digital releases actually altered from the original, thereby making the analog titles virtual collector's items (Monty Python's Life of Brian had an entire sketch removed in all releases- hold on to those VHS tapes!! You can command a princely sum for it)

Another great example of a title changed from videotape to DVD is "The Fugitive". Season 1 had much of the music changed on DVD, but it's as broadcast on VHS.

There are also a lot of titles (both TV and film) never released on DVD that are on videotape. Some of them are already commanding high prices on Ebay.

yes exactly! I brought up the same issue on another board about VHS only releases- I know they exist, but any chance of a listing of those titles complete somewhere online? I've only had luck finding VHS only releases for particular titles, but not an actual compilation of releases that don't exist on digital media. Our local thrift store has scads of VHS tapes, but I never know which one to snatch up. I'm not an eBayer, I keep the things I buy from thrift stores. That's another thorn in my side- fleabay snatchers! They grab up EVERYTHING with the most intrinsic of values for resale. I'd bet those fleabay jerks walk right by used VHS tapes though, considering they can't make any $$ off of those. Uh oh- don't give them any ideas!

but yeah, I'll try another web search for VHS only releases list. Maybe I'm not searching for it with the right terms.

never mind.. found lotsa lists

Looked at my Tape 3 again - at the very end of the tape is about ten minutes or so of a KCPQ "Cleopatra" broadcast -around 1988 or 1989 with a commercial break featuring ads for Cal Worthington Ford in Federal Way and an optical store. SP mode so it is a very short recording.

I also have a tape with both parts of Cleopatra, recorded from WEWS (ABC) in Cleveland on January 11 and 12, 1992 with ads. The first part also has the last 15 minutes of that night's broadcast of Nightline beforehand (special edition called The Gulf War: Untold Stories) also with ads.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Picked up a small amount of tapes at a garage sale a few days ago.

TAPE 1: Dr. Andrew Weil: Eight Weeks to Optimum Health (PBS special) taped from KLRN in San Antonio sometime in 1997, including part of a pledge drive intermission

TAPE 2: Four and a half hours of CNN coverage of Bill Clinton's grand jury testimony taped on 9/21/1998, features Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff at the anchor desk

TAPE 3: Not exactly a home-recorded VHS, but kind of looks like one: A tape of a broadcast of Tim Russert on CNBC from 8/7/1999 (interviews with Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, reporters of the Watergate Scandal) made by Burrelle's Information Services (they used to make copies of broadcasts of newsmagazines and talk shows for those who would order them, most of us probably remember seeing plugs for transcripts and videotapes during some of these shows)...tape starts with a few seconds of color bars, then the show starts; of course the commercial breaks were cut out, but strangely enough, a couple of the commercials weren't edited out all that well; then color bars for a few seconds after the show before the tape ends

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Do you ever find personal videos? I don't mean porn, but tapes of weddings or birthday parties or family vacations. For instance, the tape had been used to record something off TV and was labeled as such, but then the owner decided to reuse the tape in a camera and forgot to re-label the event.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I spotted a T-30 VHS (JVC) at the record store I usually hit in Everett that said "Christmas Morning 1987" on it. Since it was only a T-30 and it looked family event-like, I never have picked it up. I don't need to have a tape showing some other family's Christmas presents on it from 25 years ago!

Scott2011, speaking of those transcript tapes, I found two VHS tapes at the same place with two different episodes of Jerry Springer from 1995. Around a 60 minute tape for each. Also another tape had an episode of the former KOMO show "Northwest Afternoon" from 1999, also copied from broadcast by some tape duplication company. Since it was not a home-recorded tape, I did not pick up any of them.

Also, my tape with the "Cleopatra" snippet was recorded in AUGUST 1987 - looking back at the Cal Worthington ad, in the fine print it said "TAKE DELIVERY BY 8/31/87".

Kind of surprising to hear of a local program being professionally copied and distributed. I don't think I've ever heard of any other local shows being professionally made like that, but I know episodes of a lot of nationally broadcast talk shows like Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, Montel Williams, Dr. Phil, etc. and broadcasts of national news programs like Nightline, Dateline NBC, Tim Russert, etc. have been made available for viewers to order by phone.

I did some research on Northwest Afternoon. Apparently KOMO cancelled the show in 2008 after 24 years on the air because the show was getting killed in the local ratings, as it aired opposite such nationally syndicated programs as Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, and Maury Povich. Looking at the show's article on Wikipedia, it seems like it was pretty similar to The Morning Exchange on WEWS in Cleveland, which ran from 1972 to 1999.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I miss Cindi Rinehart and the Soaps! My mother used to watch her recaps of GH and Y&R on NW Afternoon for years. When she missed an episode she got to see Cindi Rinehart's recap.

Goodwill stores seems to be a bit picky these days and would rather just throw away things like video tapes instead of stocking them on the shelves. The little local thrift shops are the ones to shop. A few years ago, I picked up a few tapes at a little local thrift store which had CNN coverage of the Space Shuttle Challanger explosion from 1986 as well as coverage of the 1986 Statue of Liberty centennial celebration, followed by a complete NYC 11pm newscast (I think it was WCBS-TV 2)

Unfortunatly all the great VHS tapes I have sit in the closet because neither one of my VCRs are in working condition and no one repairs them locally anymore. I'd just buy another one, but I haven't had the luck you guys have had in finding VCRs.

I got a pretty good 4 head HiFi stereo JVC off of ebay a couple months back. I've got a lot and I mean a lot of old VHS tapes with movies and tv show from the late 80s into the late 90s. I also use to use VHS tapes for recording live nightclub broadcasts from the radio (all Hifi stereo). I bought it to transfer the audio to hard drive. They all still sound amazing

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I looked over my tapes again and found a couple of new goodies.

Tape 92 - After the movie "Sugar Hill" with Wesley Snipes, the tape goes into *recorded* blue screen for a few minutes before switching to the last ten minutes of a 1997 episode of "Leeza" taped off KING with commercials, including breaking news of a Bremerton earthquake. Also has Rosie O'Donnell taped from KING with commercials.
Tape 101 - Not only are "The Simpsons" on this tape, but a couple of episodes of "The Drew Carey Show" - one taped off KTTV 11, and the other taped off KOMO 4 Seattle - wonder why? Also had some KCPQ-taped Simpsons reruns as well.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I went to an estate sale early this week and came across a great find -- for me, at least. I got a tape of "Ann Jillian," a short-lived 1989-1990 sitcom. As far as I can tell, it's the only show on the homemade tape (in SP speed), as it's static immediately following the end of the show. I have no idea if the episode was recorded off my local NBC affiliate (WTMJ-TV, Milwaukee), as commercials were removed. However, there was a voice-over promo during the credits, urging viewers to stay tuned to "Sister Kate." (There was a special appearance by Milli Vanilli! :D) I remember catching Jillian's sitcom back in the day, so it was a treat to see it again.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Sister Kate was also an NBC show, lasting 19 eps and 1 season.

The Rosie show I mentioned was from June 1997, had Julia Roberts on it and was promoting "My Best Friend's Wedding." Very nice to see!

I vividly recall "Sister Kate." I have an episode of it on tape, recorded off Lifetime when they were showing reruns. Like Jillian's sitcom, "Sister Kate" never quite caught on during the initial NBC run. NBC burned off unaired episodes of both sitcoms in the summer of 1990.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Since my posts may be lost forever, here goes YET AGAIN for my VHS finds from last week...
W/C - commercials
N/C - no commercials
S/C - partial commercials

Tape 1 - Part 12 of "I Cladius" taped off KCTS n/c as well as two episodes of Northern Exposure taped off KIRO 1991 w/c.
Tape 2 - The 10th Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival taped off KITV 4 Honolulu w/c, all are local ads for Honolulu. Also an episode of Murphy Brown off KGMB w/c, partial Designing Women off KGMB s/c, a special on Louisiana Politics taped off PBS (probably KHET) n/c, an episode of Home Improvement taped off KITV w/c, and a 1994 KING/5 5PM newscast w/c. The tape switches from SLP to SP so the newscast takes up the rest of the tape.
Tape 3 - Many episodes of "The Late Mr. Pete Show", a short-lived comedy/late night show with grade C guests, taped off USA in 1992, all w/c. Also many ads for Honolulu. It precedes a five-minute CBS This Morning clip with Paula Zahn and a volleyball team.
Tape 4 - A few A&E Mystery Movies taped off A&E in Feb 2003 w/c.
Tape 5 - A Seattle Symphony special taped off KCTS in 1993 w/ pledge break, episode of Twin Peaks taped off KOMO 1991 w/c.
Tape 6 - Five episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, all season 1 episodes, taped off KVOS 12 w/c and KCPQ 13 w/c, syndicated reruns from 1990.
Tape 7 - A Kilauea Volcano special taped off what I believe was KITV in the early 90s, this precedes a few minutes of Murphy Brown. Also includes two episodes of Married...with Children taped off KHNL/13 w/c in 1989, both had to do with Christmas. Also two episodes of the Canadian series "Diamonds" with Nicholas Campbell, taped off USA, 1990 w/c.
Tape 8 - Superman I, Superman II and Superman III taped off an unknown source n/c.
Tape 9 - ALCS Game 4 from 1995, with the Mariners playing against the Cleveland Indians, taped off KING-NBC w/c. Precedes the last several minutes of an episode of Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures taped off KING s/c.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Don't know what happened to my last post on this thread, but here's what I found on some tapes I picked up within the past few weeks, all from garage sales.

TAPE 1: A very rare find...this tape contained a few documentaries that were broadcast on the Classroom Channel, a service that was part of the controversial Channel One Network that many middle and high schools used to have access to. In addition to the daily broadcasts of Channel One News, the network would run documentaries during the evening that teachers and school librarians could record for classroom use. This tape in particular started with a promotional video for the Classroom Channel programming, then a documentary called Camp Bluebird (produced by Ozarks Public Television), followed by a few episodes of a series called WorldWise, which was produced by the United States Peace Corps. All of this content was recorded on March 7, 1996, as indicated by the color bars at the start of the tape.

TAPE 2: Alias season finale, 9 News at 11, Nightline broadcast (Women Warriors), Jimmy Kimmel Live (J.J. Abrams and the cast of Lost), Inside Edition broadcast, Oprah episode, and an hour and a half of ABC World News Now, taped from WCPO in Cincinnati on May 25-26, 2005 all with ads

TAPE 3: Most of an episode of Oprah and 9 News at 5, 5:30, and most of 6, taped from WCPO on 9/19/2005 with ads

TAPE 4: First few minutes of an episode of Las Vegas taped from WLWT in Cincinnati in November 2003 with a few ads; most of an episode of Karen Sisco taped from WCPO on 10/29/2003 with ads; 9 News at 11, Nightline broadcast (Critical Condition: Healthcare in America), Jimmy Kimmel Live, episode of Living It Up with Ali and Jack, Tornado Fuel Saver infomercial, and an hour and a half of ABC World News Now, taped from WCPO on October 22-23, 2003 all with ads

TAPE 5: Mr. Bean episode "Mind the Baby," taped circa 1994 (since no on-screen idents were found during the program, I can only presume this was taped from either WCET in Cincinnati or WPTD in Dayton, it was found at the same garage sale I found the rest of the Cincinnati tapes at); last 30 minutes of The Knots Landing Block Party (CBS special), all of the final episode of Knots Landing, and first few minutes of 9 News at 11, taped from WCPO (was Cincinnati's CBS affiliate prior to 1996) on 5/13/1993 with ads; most of an episode of Days of Our Lives taped from WLWT in July 1991 with ads; last few minutes of Saturday Night Live and half of an episode of Pump It Up (old hip-hop music video show) taped from WKEF in Dayton on 4/21/1991 with ads

TAPE 6: Dances with Wolves (1990), found uncut and without commercials, unknown if this was taped from premium cable or copied from a rental tape

TAPE 7: Biography Extra episode on George Armstrong Custer and half of a Life Stories episode on Pele, taped from the Biography Channel in August 2003 with ads

TAPE 8: Ken Burns American Stories episode taped from WVIZ in Cleveland on 11/24/2003...during the end credits and the promos that were shown after the program, we see the original owner of the tape scrolling through the program guide on their Armstrong Digital Cable box, and after a few minutes, the channel changes to Fox News Channel during part of a broadcast of On the Record with Greta Van Susteren for a few minutes, along with a few ads; most of Company Man (2000) and first few minutes of Dr. T and the Women (2000) taped from The Movie Channel Xtra circa 2003 with promos in between the movies; last few minutes of The Junction Boys (ESPN movie) before the tape runs out

TAPE 9: Dateline NBC broadcast taped from WKYC in Cleveland on 8/30/1998 with ads and start of Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995); A&E Biography episode on Princess Diana taped on 8/30/1998 with ads (different from the 2002 Princess Diana Biography I have, as this one was two hours long)

TAPE 10: Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) taped from WRGT in Dayton in July 1986 with ads (last 30 minutes of the movie are missing because it was taped in SP speed)

TAPE 11: The Law and Harry McGraw episode taped from WBNS in Columbus on 1/12/1988 with ads; Magnum P.I. episode taped from WBNS on 1/13/1988 with ads

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

Hey Scott2011, have you glad you see a list of home-recorded Nick Jr tapes along with other home-recorded VHS tapes
at Kaylor's house in Haskell, Arkansas???

So, we'll give us a list of home-recorded tapes later today.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I recently got a good number of unopened - still in their shrink wrap - VHS tapes from a thrift store. I took two of the 4 Sony 12-Packs, and my sister took one too. I also took what was left of a TDK 10-pack. Each tape cost $1.00. When I want to watch something only once, I record on one of my VHS machines. If I want to keep something, I'll dub the VHS to DVD and cut the commercials out. It's nice to have these new tapes as the quality I've been getting is very good.

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

I sometimes record on VHS (but I haven't in months). I use Maxell T-120s and T-160s. Tapes are getting worse and worse with quality but still good.

Again, my favorites were the Sony V's from the late 1990s and early '00s, Scotch EG from the 80s and Memorex from the late 1980s. All were great tapes!

Re: Self-made VHS tapes at Thrift Stores

While on vacation in Western Kentucky last week, I managed to visit a flea market and pick up six tapes. Here's what I found:

TAPE 1: F/X (1986) taped from HBO; Blue Velvet (1986) taped from Showtime; Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986) taped from HBO, all circa 1988

TAPE 2: Traxx (1988), Young Guns (1988), Salvador (1986), and first 30 minutes of The Dead Pool (1988), all taped from HBO in July 1989 with promos found after the first three movies

TAPE 3: The Longest Day (1962) taped from SuperStation TBS in March 1988 with ads and first few minutes of Death Wish (1974); ABC post-race coverage of the 1987 Atlanta 500 and most of a broadcast of World News Sunday with Sam Donaldson taped from WSIL in Harrisburg, IL on 3/15/1987 with ads; most of part three of Peter the Great (NBC miniseries) taped from WPSD in Paducah on 2/4/1986 with ads, one of the ad breaks is cut short due to technical difficulties with the network, we see an NBC technical difficulties slide and hear an announcer say "Please stand by," then forget to turn off his microphone for about a minute...oops; tape ends with the first few minutes of Citizen Kane (1941) taped from Cinemax

TAPE 4: MASH (the 1972 movie that inspired the classic TV series) taped from TBS in December 1989 with ads and first few minutes of a broadcast of U.S. Olympic Gold; last hour of part two of Till We Meet Again (CBS miniseries) and first 20 minutes of Heartland News at Ten, taped from KFVS in Cape Girardeau on 11/21/1989 with ads; last 45 minutes of part four of War and Remembrance (ABC miniseries) and first few minutes of Newscenter 3 at 10:00 taped from WSIL on 11/17/1988 with a few ads
