Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

I did too. Some of the content seems newer and taped over several times...i.e. there was one tape marked "Wilkos" (meaning Steve Wilkos) in one of the pictures.
There was also a big lot in Liberty Lake being sold on craigslist, but alas I got no response from the woman who was selling the tapes. They had hundreds' worth.
Going to catch some more yard and estate sales today, hopefully I will find more KIMA/KAPP/KNDO content.
I was able to email one of KNDO's old reporters (she now works in a completely different setting) asking about the 1992 KNDO news clip I found on that "Danielle Steel's Secrets" tape...the anchor never said his name during the broadcast or in the teasers. The anchor was Jim Lewis, who would later be Yakima County Commissioner, and worked at KNDO for many years in the '90s.

This will be next Saturday...no need to go to any other sales... http://mega993online.com/category/events/yakimas-biggest-yard-sale/

Didn't catch the Steve Wilkos tape in that lot. I'm wondering if that would have had any season one (2007-2008) episodes of his show when it was taped at the NBC Tower in Chicago and Richard Dominick was the executive producer. The first season episodes seem to be the most obscure, as a lot of markets didn't show it during the first season (WUAB didn't show it until the start of the second season).

No luck at the Smithville community yard sales today. On top of that, the parking around town was a bit of a pain. Several streets didn't allow for roadside parking, which means I passed by a lot of the sales without getting a chance to browse through them, so who knows if the ones I missed had any tapes. Plus, many of the streets that did allow parking were already pretty full when I got there. Nice little town though. It's just north of Orrville, which has its community yard sales every year in October, and when I was there last year, I had better luck finding tapes.

I went to "Yakima's Biggest Yard Sale" today...and found a ton of blank VHS tapes to boot. Here's the finds I made:

Nice mix again. Unfortunately, I missed out on what could have been a good opportunity to pick up some more tapes this weekend. The city of Berea, Ohio (Cleveland suburb) held its 17th annual city-wide garage sale. The consolation, though, is that the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea has a flea market every weekend from April through October weather permitting, so depending on which vendors are selling what, there's always that potential.

My garage sale VHS haul this past Thursday was small, but interesting.

TAPE 1: Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration taped from a C-band satellite wildfeed for PBS in 1993. Tape started with the opening slate and countdown, and in the spots where the pledge breaks would be inserted were slides listing the length of each segment, date of recording, etc.--neat find!

TAPE 2: Episodes of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, A League of Their Own (short-lived CBS sitcom based on the movie), Brooklyn Bridge, Raven and most of Newscenter 8 at 11:00 with Dave Buckel and later NBC News correspondent Kelly O'Donnell taped from WJW in Cleveland on 4/10/1993 with commercials; end of The Arsenio Hall Show, The Whoopi Goldberg Show (guest Robert Palmer), The Joan Rivers Show (guests LaToya Jackson and Kevin Cyrus) and a few minutes of CBS News Up to the Minute (anchored by Russ Mitchell, who would later become an anchor for rival station WKYC) taped from WJW on 2/1/1993 with commercials

TAPE 3: The Prince of Tides (1991) taped from Request 2 Pay-Per-View in June 1992 with a few minutes of promos afterward; partially taped over episode of Another World taped from WHEC in Rochester in March 1992 with commercials; partially taped over episode of Beetlejuice, Tiny Toon Adventures and Growing Pains taped from WUHF in Rochester in March 1992 with commercials. The WUHF footage has a fuzzy, black-and-white picture throughout due to poor OTA reception.

Even smaller haul for me today. But also interesting. Went to at least five sales, but only one had a blank VHS tape (meaning just one lonely Maxell GX-Silver T-120).

Tape 1 - Good Grief, Charlie Brown: A Tribute to Charles Schultz taped off CBS/WTVF NASHVILLE (!) on 2/11/2000 with commercials; most of a Biography episode on Charles Schultz taped off A&E in 2000 minus ads; Here's to You Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years! taped off CBS/WTVF on 5/10/2000 with commercials (last ever Peanuts special on CBS); partial episode of Nash Bridges taped off CBS/WTVF sometime in 2000 with commercials leading up to the first minute or so of News Channel 5 at 10 before the tape goes blank

While in Barberton earlier today, I went to a flea market and picked up another tape--a Sony T-120. Here's what was on it:

-Partial showing (about an hour or so) of Catwoman (2004) taped from AMC in May 2009 minus most commercials--SP mode with Hi-Fi stereo audio
-Last few minutes of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) taped from TCM (The Essentials) in summer 2003 with several promos afterward--SLP mode
-Partially taped over episode of Everybody Loves Raymond and partial episode of High School Reunion taped from WBNX in Akron on 1/9/2003 with commercials--SLP mode

I also picked up an audiocassette with a label that reads "Country 103.5 Charleston, S.C. April 1992." I have yet to listen to it and don't know what station that refers to, but there could be a good chance of finding airchecks from that station on this tape.

I actually have a small amount of Nashville TV footage as well, but it's actually even more minuscule than your latest find in terms of local content/advertising. The tape I'm referring to has the first few minutes and first commercial break of the Simpsons episode "Homer at the Bat" (summer rerun) taped from WZTV in July 1992. At the scene where Homer starts choking on the donuts, the rest of the episode got taped over with a Disney Channel showing of A Goofy Movie (1995).

More finds from more garage sales this weekend!

TAPE 1: The Big Sleep (1946) taped from WOIO in Cleveland in February 1988, one commercial break intact, all others cut out; Lethal Weapon (1987) taped from unknown pay TV channel sometime in 1988; most of a broadcast of Smythe Cramer's Sunday Showcase of Homes and first couple minutes of CBS News Sunday Morning taped from WJW in Cleveland on 5/1/1988 with commercials

TAPE 2: In Concert '91 with Don Henley, Southside, Little Steven and Bon Jovi taped from WAKC in Akron on 11/1/1991 with commercials

TAPE 3: Four episodes of The Outer Limits (original version) taped from TNT in February 1992 with commercials

TAPE 4: Episode of Miracles and Other Wonders taped from TLC on 7/1/1995 with commercials

TAPE 5: Behind the Music episode on Stevie Nicks taped from VH1 on 11/1/1998 with commercials; A Look Back at the '70s taped from the History Channel on 11/1/1998 with commercials

TAPE 6: Don Henley Live By Request encore presentation taped from A&E on 5/25/2000 with commercials; partially taped over ABC Big Picture Show presentation of Air Force One (1997) taped from WEWS in Cleveland on 5/21/2000 with commercials

Here comes another haul of tapes. This came from a church rummage sale about two miles from my house. This lot is interesting...because NONE OF THE TAPES WERE FROM YAKIMA!! Yes, content from KIMA, KAPP and KNDO were MIA at this sale. Bought ten, but some were duds (off rentals or pay-TV w/ no promos), so I'm only posting the real keepers.

Tape 1 - "Child's Play 2" (1991) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; The World's Scariest Police Chases 3 taped off WFLD Chicago/Fox on 11/13/1997 with commercials; "The Blob" (1958) taped off Showtime in November 1993 with promos before the movie
Tape 2 - "The Other Sister" (1999) taped off TBS Superstation in Februrary 2003 with commercials. In SP mode, so the movie is incomplete.
Tape 3 - "Little Monsters" (1989) taped off unknown pay-TV channel, starts with a brief jumble of previous recordings including the intro montage to Roseanne; part of an episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson taped off KNBC Los Angeles/NBC on 5/25/1988 with commercials (incomplete due to SP mode)
Tape 4 - "Enemy of the State" taped off Viewer's Choice PPV in September 1999 w/ promos after the movie
Tape 5 - "The Return of Jafar" (1994) copied off the Walt Disney Home Video rental tape; partial episode and three full episodes of The Brady Bunch taped off WPWR-50 Chicago in May 1994 with commercials; partial broadcast of Horton Hears a Who (1970 cartoon) taped off TNT in the early 1990s with no commercials, and oddly enough, taped again afterwards; part of "Storm in a Teacup" (1937) taped off a late night Movie Greats Network airing and aired on KABC-7 Los Angeles in 1988 with commercials, and sign off (includes a vintage 1960s test pattern!)

Some of the best finds of the year so far. Found at one particular yard sale in Yakima today. The sellers, an older couple, were selling tons of antiques and collectibles.

Tape 1 - "The Jewel of the Nile" (1985) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; part of America's Funniest Home Videos: An Inside Look and part of an episode of Gabriel's Fire taped off KAPP-35 Yakima/ABC on 9/12/1990 w/ commercials - blank after only 2 hours, 5 min of content
Tape 2 - "The Whereabouts of Jenny" (1991 TV-movie) taped off KAPP-35/ABC on 1/14/1991 w/ commercials; "Julie" (1956) taped off KIMA-29 Yakima in January 1991 with commercials and part of the sign-off, which was a syndicated airing; about 4 minutes of a KNDO NewsCenter 23 at 11 newscast from January 1991 ends the tape. Tape is a little damaged. I've already posted the KIMA sign-off which was the same one (minus the "Dream of the Blue Turtles" video) on my YouTube channel, taped in 1997.
Tape 3 - "Cluny Brown" (1946), "Ride a Northbound Horse" (1969) and "The Man from Snowy River" (1982) taped off The Disney Channel on 5/3-5/4/1988 w/ promos in between the movies, ends with a long intershow, an announcement that they would be leaving the air for maintenance, and about 30 minutes of color bars before the tape ends
Tape 4 - "The Great Outdoors" (1988) taped off KSTW-11 Tacoma/Seattle on 4/30/1993 with commercials (based off a news teaser about the Monica Seles stabbing); part of "36 Hours" (1965) taped off Encore with an intermission bumper, circa 1992/93; part of "Back to the Future II" (1990) taped off KAPP-35/ABC on 5/3/1992 with commercials. Accidentally taped in SP mode although the broadcast lasted 2 1/2 hours with ads.
Tape 5 - The Mouse on the Mayflower (1968 Rankin-Bass Thanksgiving special) and part of the KAPP/KVEW Weekend Report with Robert Kennedy taped off KAPP-35 on 11/23/1991 with commercials; part of an episode of 60 Minutes (just the mailbag segment with Ed Bradley, a commercial break and the end credits), LOCAL (not CBS) showing of "Arthur" (1981), CBS Sunday Night News with Bill Plante, Entertainment Tonight Weekend and 12:15AM sign-off taped off KIMA-29 Yakima on 10/27/1991 with commercials. The movie was aired due to the World Series on CBS that night. It took up primetime on the east coast.
Tape 6 - Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers taped off KNDO-23/NBC on 12/9/1990 with commercials; part of Amazing Grace with Bill Moyers and most of A Girl of the Limberlost/Wonderworks Family Movie taped off KYVE-47 Yakima in December 1990 w/ local pledge breaks
Tape 7 - "Popeye" (1980) taped off A&E in May 1992 with commercials. In SP mode, so it's incomplete.
Tape 8 - "Goodbye, Miss 4th of July" (1988) taped off The Disney Channel's Fall Preview Weekend around October 1989 with a few promos after the show; "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961) also taped off the Fall Preview Weekend in October 1989 with promos; part of "Fantastic Voyage" before the tape goes blank

This is turning out to be a banner year for me when it comes to blank tapes. Just got a nice lot from Fairfax, VA where my oldest tape record was broken, AGAIN! I took out the tapes that had no ads or were entirely copied from rentals.

Tape 1 - "Pride & Prejudice", the BBC miniseries, taped off A&E in January 1996 minus ads; partial episode of The Rosie O'Donnell Show (guest Mark Curry) and first couple of minutes of Ricki Lake taped off WJLA-7 Washington, DC on 8/12/1996 with ads; taped over Pride & Prejudice afterwards, off A&E in January 1996 WITH commercials.
Tape 2 - "61*" taped off HBO Plus in May 2001 with promos before the movie
Tape 3 - 1999 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony taped off VH1 3/17/1999 with commercials; episode of Touched by An Angel and part of the TV-movie "Blue Moon" taped off WUSA-9/CBS Washington, DC on 4/11/1999 with ads. Signal was taped off antenna and is poor at times with interference.
Tape 4 - Two episodes of The X-Files taped off WTTG-5/Fox Washington, DC on 2/7/1999 and 2/14/1999 with commercials; episode of French & Saunders taped off WETA-26/PBS 2/14/1999 with promos after the show; episode of Frasier, the first few minutes of Veronica's Closet, an episode of ER and part of News 4 at 11 taped off WRC-4/NBC 2/18/1999 with commercials

Tape 7 - "Guys & Dolls" (1955) and "Kentucky Moonshine" (1938) taped off AMC around May 1992 with Bob Dorian's intro and conclusion segments. LP mode and in C-grade quality, unfortunately. Originally had St. Elsewhere and various other network shows on it, and frankly, I would have rather seen that.
Tape 8 - 100 Women of the Century taped off WJLA/ABC on 4/30/1999 with commercials; part 2 of "The '60s" taped off WRC/4 NBC on 2/8/1999 with some commercials (not all are included)

Tape 12 - Several episodes of Absolutely Fabulous (British sitcom) and partial episode of The Critic taped off Comedy Central in January 1997 with most commercials included; taped-over showing of "Easter Parade" (1948) from unknown channel, no ads (AMC?); "Explorers" (1985) taped off Showtime in July 1986 with a couple of promos before the movie

Tape 5 - Peter Pan (the 1954 NBC live-action adaptation with Mary Martin) minus ads; episode of Great Performances (Irving Berlin's America) taped off PBS in March 1986 (no promos to tell which station, probably WETA); short aircheck of MTV from June 1986 with one commercial break and two music videos (Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years" and Bryan Adams' "Heaven"); Linda Ronstadt concert taped off unknown pay-TV channel in 1986; "Gremlins" (1984) taped off HBO in June 1986 with about 10 minutes of promos after the movie; ends with a making of segment for Return of the Jedi taped off unknown pay-TV channel
Tape 6 - "The Color Purple" (1985) taped off HBO in January 1988 with promos before the movie; Penn & Teller Go Public taped off Maryland Public Television sometime in 1988; "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986) taped off HBO in January 1988 with a couple of promos

Tape 11 - MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour taped off WNET-13/PBS New York on 9/19/1991; another broadcast taped 9/20/1991 from WNET; several episodes of Murphy Brown taped off WCBS-2/CBS in September 1992 minus ads; partial broadcast of Channel 2 News at 11 from 9/22/1992; rest of tape seems to be clips of MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and part of the LBJ/American Experience documentary
Tape 13 - "Monterey Pop" (1968) taped off AMC in July 2000 with promos before the movie; Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain taped off KQED-9/PBS San Francisco in July 2000 with promos before the program; part of An American Love Story taped off KQED in September 1999
Tape 14 - Part 1 of "Peter the Great" taped off WRC/NBC on 2/2/1986 with commercials
Tape 15 - An American in Paris and The Wizard of Oz copied from rentals; episode of Godzilla (cartoon series) and partial episode of Hong Kong Phooey taped off WRC/NBC's Saturday Morning cartoon block, 1/17/1981 with ads!!!! Oldest tape yet...and what a rare find!
Tape 16 - "My Fair Lady" copied from rental tape; part of a Frank Sinatra special taped off The Disney Channel in December 1992 with some promos at the end; part of "Curly Top" (with Shirley Temple) copied from rental tape
Tape 17 - Two showings of The Honeymooners' Lost Episodes taped off Showtime in November 1985 with promos, in between the showings is a partial commercial break from Nickelodeon circa November 1985; the 1st Annual American Comedy Awards taped off ABC/WJZ-13 Baltimore 5/19/1987 with commercials
Tape 18 - End of the 3rd and all of the 4th quarter of Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals, taped off WRC-4/NBC 6/7/1998 with commercials; short Bulls-related clips from WGN News taped the same evening; Game 4 of the 1998 NBA Finals taped off WRC-4/NBC 6/10/1998 with commercials
Tape 19 - Part 1 of "Cleopatra" (1999) taped off WJLA/ABC 5/23/1999 with commercials (SP mode)

I also have a recorded tape of 61* and Game 4 of 1998 NBA Finals, the latter recorded from WNWO in Toledo.

Neat find with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. That would have been neat for me to find since I live only about 45 minutes away from Cleveland.

I have a partially taped-over recording of part three of Peter the Great taped from WPSD in Paducah, Kentucky. During one of the commercial breaks in that part, NBC experienced technical difficulties, and after the announcer said "please stand by" over the technical difficulties slide, he had forgotten to turn off his microphone and everyone watching the show heard some rather, um, awkward sounds coming from him.

I bought several tapes from the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds flea market in Berea, Ohio (suburb of Cleveland) this morning. They all came from a vendor who was selling several boxes full of VHS tapes, both store-bought and home-recorded, along with storage shelves and a VCR. Here's what I found on some of the tapes I did buy from him.

TAPE 1: Moll Flanders (1996) taped from Showtime circa 1997; partially taped over broadcast of WCW Monday Nitro taped from TNT on 11/3/1997 with commercials; last few minutes of WWF Summerslam taped from Cox Pay-Per-View on 8/3/1997; partially taped over episode of Jerry Springer ("Give Up Your Sexy Job!") and partial episode of Days of Our Lives taped from WKYC on 5/21/1997 with commercials, including a couple of promos for the final episode of Wings, which aired that evening

TAPE 2: Part of History of Music Videos A to Z (VH1 special) taped on 7/4/1998 minus commercials; Behind the Music episode on Gloria Estefan taped from VH1 on 7/5/1998 with commercials; last few minutes of VH1 Storytellers concert with Bonnie Raitt and rerun of Behind the Music episode on Bonnie Raitt taped on 7/12/1998 with commercials

TAPE 3: Milk Money (1994) copied from rental tape; partially taped over episode of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman taped from WJW in May 1994 with commercials

TAPE 4: Several episodes of South Park taped from Comedy Central between September and December 1998 with commercials, including several local ads from the Denver area shown via TCI Cable

There were a few duds in the mix as well, including one supposedly containing the movie What Dreams May Come (1998) that caused my VCR to turn itself off after just a few seconds of playback! :O Luckily, my VCR did not experience any other problems playing back the other tapes.

We are having the same VCR problems!
I bought several tapes from two Yakima yard sales today. But at least a few of those tapes are messy...and I didn't know it until I pressed play. My JVC VCR's picture went completely away. Audio was still 100%. Deep cleaning with chamois swabs and isopropyl alcohol didn't work, as did a head cleaner. Then all of a sudden, I put another tape (unlabeled) in, and the damn VCR started malfunctioning! It would fast-forward on the cassette all on its own, and pressing any button did NO difference whatsoever. It finally shut off and I was able to pull the tape out. I tried one that I knew worked, and it did the same thing.
RIP JVC HR-A55U. Circa 1998/1999-July 2nd, 2016. Unfortunately, the funeral will be held either near a garbage can, or at an electronics recycling place.

Before it died, I was able to pick out a few keepers.
- "Batman Returns" (1992) taped off KNDO/NBC 2/12/1995 with commercials
- "Footloose" (1984) taped off KCYU-LP/Fox 9/25/1997 with commercials (somewhat fuzzy video however NOT due to bad heads, but due to reception of ch 68...remember, it was an LPTV!)
- "I'll Do Anything" (1994) taped off Cinemax in April 1995 with lots of promos afterwards, it was a free preview weekend

So now all I have is my newish Funai VCR/DVD Recorder unit, which I use to transfer videos to DVDs (I then sell the tapes). I have emailed a Craigslist seller about an S-VHS VCR for $25 in NH...but will he ship it? We shall see. I NEED an S-VHS compatible VCR due to four Kansas City tapes that were recorded in Super VHS, oddly enough (Fuji brand). Two of them I haven't finished going through (one has a Price is Right episode from early September 1994 on it, plus a WDAF newscast). The other has various programming including more newscasts, two episodes of Real Stories of the Highway Patrol off KCTV with ads, and a partial People's Court off WGN with ads.
Wish me luck. It has been a bad day for me.

Luckily, when that happened, I was able to power my VCR back up, and the What Dreams May Come tape ejected itself when I did so, so I was able to take the tape out and throw it away. No problems since then, even when I played back a newer tape I recorded myself, and even when I tried recording a few minutes of TV to test it out.

I spotted a few S-VHS VCRs on eBay. At first I thought this one would have been a good one to go for, but then I saw that it didn't have a remote--shoot.

If U-Matic tapes were to count, I got a CBC recording from May 9, 1978. Couldn't play it for 10 years from the moment I first obtained it (in 2006) but it finally got transferred about 6 weeks ago to DVD. Prior to finally knowing and seeing the contents, my previous old old was a few VHS tapes from 1984 (which also had CBC recordings on them).

I have other recordings between 1978 and 1984 but I got them off other people and were already transferred to DVD by the time I got them.

I went to a moving sale in Brunswick yesterday that included, among other things, a HUGE amount of VHS tapes! There were a few boxes full of them, along with several inside a cabinet. Here's what I found on that ones I ended up buying:

TAPE 1: Both parts of Anne of Green Gables (1985 PBS miniseries) taped from WVIZ in July 2000; both parts of Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987 PBS miniseries) taped from WVIZ in July 2000 with pledge breaks. Part of the second part of the former miniseries had been taped over with most of an episode of Gardener's Journal taped from HGTV in June 2001 with commercials, including the network's sign-on before the show started.

TAPE 2: Ice Age (2002) copied from rental tape; last several minutes of the fourth quarter of the Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers and part of the first quarter of Cincinnati Bengals vs. Los Angeles Raiders joined in progress (NFL on NBC coverage) taped from WKYC on 11/5/1989 with commercials; partially taped over episode of Falcon Crest taped from WJW in October 1989 with commercials and start of Newscenter 8 at 11:00 with Tim Taylor and Eleanor Hayes (the latter anchor filling in for Robin Swoboda)

TAPE 3: The Path to 9/11 (ABC miniseries) taped from WEWS on September 10 and 11, 2006, shown by ABC without commercials--crainbebo has the West Coast feed of this miniseries, but the East Coast feed included something different. During the second part, ABC halted the program on the East Coast to broadcast President Bush's speech on the fifth anniversary of 9/11. Unfortunately, very little of that coverage is on my tape, as these were taped from recordings on a Time Warner Cable DVR and the speech started in the last couple minutes of the scheduled DVR recording. For that reason, I'm missing part of the second part of the miniseries as well. After the miniseries on the tape is one partially taped-over episode and one full episode of NYPD Blue in its first season taped from WEWS sometime in early 1994 minus commercials.

TAPE 4: First six parts of Carrier (PBS miniseries) taped from WVIZ on April 27-29, 2008, short promo blocks are shown between parts, as PBS aired this miniseries two parts at a time, these were taped from DVR recordings

TAPE 5: Last four parts of Carrier taped from WVIZ on April 30-May 1, 2008 with promo blocks in between back-to-back parts (two parts at a time like the rest of the miniseries), also taped from DVR recordings; partially taped-over episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent taped from WKYC on 1/5/2003 with a few commercials; episode of CSI: Miami taped from WOIO on 1/6/2003 with commercials; partially taped-over episode of Third Watch taped from WKYC on 10/28/2002 with a few commercials; most of an episode of 24 (season two premiere) taped from WJW on 10/29/2002, shown by Fox without commercial interruptions

TAPE 6: The Green Mile (1999) and Girl, Interrupted (1999) copied from rental tapes--after the second movie ends, there are two partial episodes of Dragon Tales taped from WVIZ in summer 2000 separated by a 15-minute-long pledge break, this footage was shown through the second VCR used to copy the movies

TAPE 7: Nova episode "Decoding Nazi Secrets" copied from PBS Home Video retail tape, the episode originally aired on PBS on 11/9/1999; World War II Battle Force episode "U-Boat" copied from PBS Home Video retail tape, originally aired on PBS sometime in 1998--after the second tape ends, there are partial broadcasts of Gillette World Sport and Beyond the Glory taped from Fox Sports Net sometime in 2001 (apparently that was when these retail tapes were transferred to this tape) with a few commercials, again that footage was shown through the second VCR used to copy the retail tapes

TAPE 8: Return to Me (2000) and 12:01 (1993) copied from rental tapes--after the second movie ends, there is a late-night aircheck of WEWS in January 2001, which includes a partial Movie 5 presentation of Calendar Girl, Cop, Killer?: The Bambi Bembenek Story (1992 ABC movie), an infomercial for the Building Wealth Workshop, and a couple minutes of ABC World News Now, all with commercials, all shown through the second VCR used to copy the movies from rentals; at the end is a partial showing of Nuremberg (TNT miniseries) taped from TNT on 7/17/2000 with a few commercials

TAPE 9: Last few minutes of an episode of Touched by an Angel, Take Me Home: The John Denver Story (CBS made-for-TV movie), and most of Hometeam 19 News at 11 with Rick Jackson and Alicia Booth taped from WOIO on 4/30/2000 with commercials; episode of NYPD Blue and first few minutes of News Channel 5 at 11:00 (Robin Swoboda and Adam Shapiro, the latter filling in for Ted Henry) taped from WEWS on 5/3/2000 with commercials; episodes of The West Wing, Law & Order and first ten minutes of Channel 3 News at 11 with Romona Robinson and Tim White taped from WKYC on 5/4/2000 with commercials

Defective tapes:
TAPE 1: Neil Diamond: Hot August Night (1977 TV special) copied from retail tape; Neil Diamond: Hello Again taped from WJW on 5/25/1986 minus commercials; Neil Diamond singing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXI taped from WJW on 1/25/1987; Neil Diamond: I'm Glad You're Here with Me Tonight (1977 TV special) copied from retail tape; Neil Diamond: Greatest Hits Live (1988) copied from retail tape. I was able to play this one back all the way through, but after I rewound it to the beginning and briefly tested it out again, my VCR started making awful squealing sounds when it played any tape. Thankfully, I was able to fix that by cleaning the heads with a new blank tape.

TAPE 2: The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2005 made-for-TV movie) taped from ABC Family. After briefly rewinding the tape while playing it back, I noticed the memory counter wasn't moving, so my guess is the tape must have been damaged somehow. Didn't affect the playback of other tapes on my VCR, but I'm still throwing it out. According to the tape label, it originally contained episodes of The Simpsons and Married with Children before the ABC Family movie taped over it.

TAPE 3: Unknown PBS documentary about Italy taped from WVIZ (tape label reads "Italy--WVIZ 3-4-02"). This one has the same problem as Tape 2, damaged tape and memory counter not moving while rewinding. Again, no problems with my VCR after briefly playing this one, but it's not worth keeping. When I played the tape, it was cued up to a pledge break shown during or after the documentary.

Extras (non-home-recorded VHS tapes):
TAPE 1: Your Heart: Choices You Can Live With (documentary made by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and hosted by former WKYC anchor and later CBS News anchor Dawn Stensland) recorded in 1995

TAPE 2: A T-5 tape made by WJW!--It contains a promo for the station's coverage of the 1992 American Legion Christmas Parade. The look of the videocassette itself was different as well, as it was BLUE and had "WJW TV8" marked on the tape guard. Wish I knew how the homeowner at this moving sale came across this tape!

Tapes left behind at the sale:
-WEWS 50th anniversary special shown in December 1997, already available to view on YouTube here with original commercials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoMWjSK1uJg
-Numerous tapes of St. Elsewhere episodes, I doubt that these were original broadcasts on NBC, but you never know--all recorded on Maxell brand tapes
-Nine tapes of NYPD Blue episodes, I have a feeling all these were probably original broadcasts on ABC since the ones I found on the tapes above were
-The Civil War miniseries (already have part of it)
-Several James Bond movies
-Several movies I already have copies of (e.g. Oklahoma, Dances with Wolves, etc.)
-Several tapes that appeared to include instructional videos copied from retail tapes

I just got a new VCR - an S-VHS Panasonic VCR, model # PV-S7670, manufactured in October 1997. It runs very well! I just posted an entire WDAF newscast off one of the S-VHS tapes. In the first Missouri eBay lot, I received four tapes that were Fuji S-VHS tapes.

Glad you found some more good finds.
I wonder if the homeowner was related to WJW-8 in some way? Maybe a family member or friend worked at WJW and they sold it to her...or maybe someone she knew was in the Christmas parade and WJW gave the owner the tape.
You should have grabbed a couple of the St. Elsewhere tapes. That show does not rerun at all anymore. If the Maxell's were from the 1990s, they were probably taped off the early days of TV Land, as they reran them for a while. Bravo also reran the show in the early '00s.
It's too bad that "12:01" was copied onto a blank. The original tape is worth $20 on eBay. New Line and Columbia Tristar Home Video released it in 1993 or 94.

I've got sales to hit tomorrow. Maybe some tapes will come out of it. Hopefully none will screw up my VCR, like last Saturday.

I was able to copy off the Batman Returns tape (from KNDO) to DVD. Turns out it also has a full episode of George Michael Sports Machine, and about 10 minutes of Jack Van Impe before the tape ends. None of the Yakima stations had local news on Sundays during the 1990s.

I also have a tape of that NBC broadcast of Batman Returns, taped from WKYC. It also has the Channel 3 News broadcast that aired afterward with Cory Thompson and the late Lisa Colagrossi, along with a partial broadcast of Hard Copy after that.

In Cleveland, George Michael Sports Machine aired on WEWS. Jack Van Impe still airs on WOIO at 1AM Sunday nights/Monday mornings.

I'm glad I was able to fix that problem with my VCR after playing that Neil Diamond tape I got. Strange that I was able to scan through the whole tape without any problems and the squealing sounds it made didn't start until after I had rewound the tape all the way.

On the recording of the CBS special "Neil Diamond: Hello Again," a lower-third at the bottom of the screen in the first couple minutes of the show read "Simulcast on Easy 104 WQAL," now known as "Q104," a top 40 format.
