Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Looks like you've found a pretty good mix of content lately. I haven't been finding nearly as much as of late. Last successful estate sale I went to was early this month when I found the two tapes of WUAB Star Movies from the mid-'80s and the MTV Top Videos of 1986 special tape that turned out to be defective.

I saw a listing on Craigslist for an estate sale in North Royalton last week and one of the photos I saw showed a couple of boxes full of tapes. The only label I was able to read in that photo was one tape labeled "All in the Family," but I could tell just about all of the tapes in that photo were home-recorded. Unfortunately, I wasn't even in town most of that week due to a personal family commitment. That photo also featured a sign on one of the boxes indicating the tapes were 25 cents each, so I could have probably bought quite a few of them for not much money.

I went to one estate sale in Medina yesterday, but there were no tapes there, although there was a Panasonic Omnivision VCR for sale.

I spotted this lot on eBay being sold just outside of Nashville. There are several other listings for other lots of the same quantity of tapes from the same seller, so the photo shown is probably a stock photo, but it looks like a pretty good mix in terms of the time periods in which these tapes were recorded.

You also seem to be doing better than I am in terms of finding Super Bowl recordings. I only have two Super Bowl tapes right now. One is Super Bowl XXIV taped from WUSA in Washington, D.C. on 1/28/1990 minus commercials and the halftime show. The other one I have is Super Bowl XXIX taped from KNTV in San Jose on 1/29/1995 with commercials. The latter also has some bonus footage afterward, including a partial KNTV News broadcast with commercials, the night's broadcast of NewsCenter 4 Sports Final on KRON with commercials, and some of KTVU's coverage of the San Francisco 49ers victory parade the next day.

Yeah, some people are like that. 'Must take all, no exceptions, no cherry-picking.' I can understand for 25 or 50 but not for 1,000+.
It's in Parsippany, NJ not far from NYC, so everything is off the network O&Os, (W)WOR, WPIX, WNEW/WNYW etc. I probably wouldn't take it because YouTube is saturated with New York content anyways. If this lot was in Boise, or Billings, or Rapid City, that would drive the price up more because older content from small towns is very hard to find. Someone had an eBay lot up in Lima, OH a while back (very small market). And I bought a 47-tape lot last month from a suburb near Boise! Nothing extremely old but I did find KIVI/KTVB/KTRV content from 1992. Quite a few tapes were rental copies and pay-TV minus intershows.

well then who is going to take it, because this could contain some raritites here

Sorry about that. I meant local programming. Sure, finding old game shows, talk shows, etc. is fun, even if they are from the NY, LA or Chicago affiliate. But local commercials, news and public affairs programming is more rarer the smaller the market it gets. I could easily find an old WCBS or KCBS newscast on YouTube. Try searching for an old 1980s newscast from KNOP/North Platte, or KIDK/Idaho Falls, or KGAN/Cedar Rapids. Much harder to find clips isn't it? The larger population and trading base in NY, LA, Chicago, SF, Seattle etc. makes it easier to find local programming from those places. Being in Yakima, all of the local stuff I find is extremely rare because we are below 100 in the Nielsen market ratings.
I found a copy of the Yakima Centennial Parade from 6/8/1985 last year. This was a local KIMA presentation, a parade celebrating 100 years of Yakima as a city. I'm sure there's only two or three copies left in existence in the Yakima/Ellensburg region. Being from 1985 makes it more rarer because there weren't as many VCRs back then. The rich people in Yakima consist of doctors, orthodontists, and owners of the big apple packing companies around here. We don't have a population of millionaire television executives like Los Angeles or New York City.

Anyhow, I got some more tapes today (yard sale) and yesterday (estate sale). A few duds which I have taken out of the listing.

Estate sale 3/31/17
Tape 1 - Part of 'Kelly's Heroes' (1970) and full episode of It's Garry Shandling's Show taped off Showtime 9/26/1989 with promos after each program
Tape 2 - 'Wall Street' (1987) taped off Showtime 1/11/1989 with promos before the movie
Tape 3 - 'The China Syndrome' (1979), 'Swing Kids' (1993) and 'International Velvet' (1978) taped off Showtime 6/5/1994 with promos in between the first and second movies
Tape 4 - Most of an episode of Richie Rich taped off KCYU-LP 68 Yakima in February 1997 with commercials. Rest of the tape is erased.

April Fool's Day 2017 (A bit of luck on the seven tapes, but mostly fools...) - yard sale
Tape 1 - 'Ernest Scared Stupid' (1991), 'Heartbreak Ridge' (1982) and 'Beetlejuice' (1988) taped off unknown pay-TV channels; partial broadcasts of One Night Stand (stand-up comedy) taped off HBO New Year's Day 1990 with promos. Bill Maher was in the first broadcast, with Dom Irrera in the second episode.
Tape 2 - This is a rare 9-hour T-180 tape! 'Home Alone' (1990) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; last few minutes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and partial episode of Wheel of Fortune (Teen Week) taped off KNDO-23 Yakima in April 1992 with commercials; partial stand-up comedy segment follows taped off unknown pay-TV channel; 'Predator 2' (1991); partial episodes of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation taped off KNDO-23 5/9/1992 with commercials; another partial episode of Star Trek: TNG taped off KNDO 5/14/1992 with commercials; partial broadcast of the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, Star Trek: TNG, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! and most of Matlock taped off KNDO 5/22/1992 with commercials
Tape 3 - Michelle Kwan: Princess on Ice taped off KAPP/ABC 1/20/2001 with commercials (The same day as George W. Bush's 1st inauguration)

Has anyone tried posting in local Freecycle, Craigslist, or Nextdoor apps/websites looking for home recorded VHS?

I've done it from time to time over the last couple of years, and I've gotten about 50 or 60 tapes over 2 or 3 lots. I always explain to people that local thrift stores toss these tapes out, so it would go to a good home.

I just picked up a local lot today with a similar ad on the Nextdoor website. So far, the 1st tape I went through was recorded in SP (which is quite rare for home recorded tapes) and it included:

-A first run episode of Law & Order from 1998 off WNCN 17 (a few years after the channel was created when NBC left WRDC 28) complete with commercials
-Series finale of Seinfeld, which would be May 14, 1998 (after a quick search of Wikipedia), this looks to be from a NY affiliate (Channel 4), strange considering on the same tape it comes from the local affiliate, then all the way to a NY NBC affiliate for the next recording. I'm a bit surprised that more people haven't posted tapes containing the series finale of Seinfeld, especially given the nearly as big as Super Bowl ratings. Maybe its because it was rated so poorly that people later taped over it? Johnny Carson's finale seems to be quite common by comparison.

LetGo always has tape lots but I don't reply to them most of the time because they usually won't ship (local only). Craigslist always has tapes in various parts of the country. This is how I got a Dallas VHS lot in late 2014 and 50 tapes from the Seattle area last year. I also used CL to inquire on a VHS lot in Grants Pass, OR, but the woman was having health problems and couldn't ship boxes out to the PO - so that didn't work. Lots of great stuff on those tapes on the other hand...
Perhaps someone either had a C-Band dish or the out-of-market affiliates on DirecTV/Dish and received WNBC NY that way. Or they moved to NY/NJ/CT shortly after the Law & Order recording.
I should keep looking at the rural Craigslist sites for small town VHS fun. Two lots up in Klamath Falls, OR right now - one has over 300 retail tapes for 50c each with a bunch of home-recorded tapes for free; and another has recorded tapes for 50c each...but will they ship?

I went to some estate sales as well as a rummage sale at the local United Methodist Church this morning. I picked up six tapes from the church sale, but unfortunately, five out of six turned out to be duds. The only keeper contained a special broadcast of Inner View (local newsmagazine on WJW hosted by Newscenter 8 anchors Tim Taylor and Denise Dufala) about crimes against children taped sometime in 1993 (probably during one of the sweeps periods) with commercials. While I don't really know anything about the Inner View program (I was only five years old in '93), my guess is the show aired on the weekends.

One of the other tapes wouldn't have been a dud if it didn't cause my VCR to shut itself off after rewinding it to the beginning (I was able to power it back up and the tape ejected itself, still operates normally with other tapes). The culprit was a Maxell T-160 tape containing a partial broadcast of Primal Fear (1996) taped from USA circa 1999 with commercials, followed by some MTV Spring Break footage afterwards, presumably from the same year (didn't see any ads from that, but couldn't look at the whole tape, so there might have been some).

Also found were two home videos (one with footage of a church service, could it have been from the same church that held the sale?), We Will Stand (Gaither Gospel Series concert with special guest T.D. Jakes) copied from DVD, and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), the latter of which wouldn't go all the way in my VCR, had to have either been copied from a DVD or rental VHS or taped from a premium cable channel. Also worth noting is that three of the six tapes I found were unlabeled, specifically the defective Spring Break tape and the two home videos.

Below the table where these tapes were placed at the sale were two boxes of tapes without cases, both prerecorded and home-recorded. Since most of the tapes in those boxes were covered in dirt and mold, I didn't bother picking any of them up, but some of the home-recorded tape labels included Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), Money Train (1995) and Get Shorty (1995), the latter of which I already have a recording of, specifically the NBC network premiere of said movie in November 1998 taped from WKJG (now WISE) in Fort Wayne. A few unlabeled tapes were in the boxes as well.

At another estate sale, there were two boxes of prerecorded VHS movies/commercial releases, but I spotted two of such tapes that stood out from the rest. Two of those prerecorded tapes had apparently been taped over with movies recorded from TV with masking tape placed over the open space where a recording tab would be on a blank tape. Labels placed on the retail cases showed the movie titles that taped over the initial videos and the labels had hinted that the tapes were recorded on/over multiple times (i.e. there were several movie titles on the written label that were crossed off because they had likely been taped over). The recorded movies were Hope Floats (1998) and The Horse Whisperer (1998). One of the original contents of such tapes was a prerecorded release of an episode of Showtime's Red Shoe Diaries, that was the one taped over with Hope Floats. I believe the other tape originally contained some other erotic movie before it was taped over with The Horse Whisperer. My suspicion is these TV recordings were from premium channels like HBO or Showtime because one of the crossed-off/taped over titles on the Horse Whisperer label was Real Sex (HBO late night show). I didn't bother buying either of those.

Nothing at any sales this weekend including a church sale. But Zillah, WA is having their city-wide sale next Saturday. Zillah is in the Lower Valley about 20 miles from my place. Over 70 homes have signed up with what I presume are many more on the way. Last year they had 115 sales! I'm sure I'll find tapes there.

Couldn't make to Zillah due to circumstances beyond my control. Went to 2 sales last Saturday in Selah instead, also found two tapes today at a local antique store.
Selah sales 4/15, sale #1
Tape 1 - 'Thelma & Louise' (1991) taped off Showtime circa 1992; 'The Babe' (1992) taped off KCPQ/Fox 4th of July 1995 minus commercials (but does have an ID bump during programming that confirms it was taped off ch 13); partial broadcast of 'The Naked Gun' (1988) taped off HBO 7/16/1992 with promos after the movie
Tape 2 - Most of Dateline NBC: Michael Jackson Unmasked, KNDO Local News 11 at 11, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly and NBC All Night reruns of Leno and about 15 minutes of Conan taped off KNDO/NBC 2/17-2/18/2003 with commercials

Tape 6 - Starts with KNDU-25's Northwest Today newscast taped off 12/21/2004 with commercials; then cuts to a Days of Our Lives episode taped off KNBC-4 Los Angeles/NBC 12/8/2004 with commercials; another Days of Our Lives taped off KNBC/NBC 12/9/2004 with commercials; three more DOOLs taped off KNBC/NBC in November 2004 with commercials; partial clip of Passions taped off KNBC/NBC in July 2004; ends with a partial clip of ER taped off KNBC/NBC in 2004. Tape begins with a huge jumble of previous recordings, dating back to the '90s, so this tape was used over and over again.
Tape 7 - 'It's a Wonderful Life' (1946) taped off KTZZ/22 Seattle in December 1990 with commercials; 'Ernest Saves Christmas' (1988), 'No Holds Barred' and first several minutes of 'Deep Star Six' taped off Showtime 12/23/1990 with promos in between the movies

This is in reply to the VHS copy of the film Lost Souls recorded off the Fox Family Channel.

as the film has now been released on DVD in the USA, I was wondering If I could purchase your vhs copy of this recording from the airing on that channel.
I first saw this film on that channel and it holds a special place in my heart and would fill a missing piece of my childhood i cannot get back.

I'm afraid I no longer have the tape. I often have to get rid of many of these tapes after I go through them, as they take up a lot of space. Sorry I can't help you out.

I had to do that with some of my tapes too. some of my episodes of China Beach, American Gladiators, some sports telecasts, and other things i had. I didn't want to get rid of them, but i had to in order to save space.

Scott, do you just throw away the tapes afterwards? Or do they get put in a donation pile? I don't ever see you on eBay auctioning them off, which I think is a really good idea. You'll get $$$ off those tapes. I recommend 25 or more at a time for best dollar amount.

That's too bad, out of the four tapes the one with the rare MTV content just HAD to be broke. I had better luck last year at a moving/estate sale where I found #40-#1 of MTV's 1985 Top 100 countdown w/ commercials, and a partial broadcast of their New Year's Eve concert (with a central time countdown) from early morning January 1st, 1986 w/ commercials. The sale had other rarities like an entire episode of Eye on Hollywood taped off KAPP 8/14/1984 and an entire episode of The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime taped off KOMO 1/17/1986.

Just one tape from an estate sale yesterday. It has both parts of the "Dead by Sunset" miniseries taped off KNDO/NBC 11/19 and 11/20/1995 with commercials. The last couple minutes of Hope & Gloria precede part 1. One other tape at the sale had a home movie on it, and next to it was an entire box of Hi-8/Video 8 home movies...WHY didn't the family take these? According to the obit for the woman who died, she left behind a son and several other family members.

Ooh, I see you have Dead By Sunset movie with the original commercials on tape. Are you be able to make the tape available for sale? Thank you

I can send a DVD copy of the miniseries within the next 1-2 weeks, PM me for information. BTW, I watched the show and really enjoyed it. Lots of suspenseful scenes!
