Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Surprised no episodes of Star Trek TOS in that lot, given the Star Trek II and III recordings you found. The irony, as I have just finished going through three tapes from the June 2024 Montana trip that had many Star Trek episodes (and one TNG) taped off WTVZ ch 33 Norfolk in the summer of 1992. Mostly season 1 with some season 2 episodes.

No new tapes since November. There was an estate sale in Boise on November 3rd that netted some late '90s recordings, mostly Babylon 5 repeats off TNT with commercials. Also one tape with Nagano Olympics coverage from KBCI/CBS. Also...I acquired several VHS tapes from one of my good friends who just opened an antique store in Yakima. He bought out a storage unit, and there were 3-4 tubs with several dozen tapes in them, about 50-50 retail/home-recorded. On those tapes I have found some cool stuff...mostly 1997-1999 recordings. There's a Tom Snyder Late Late Show on one of them (off KIMA), plus the Woodstock '99 special (Fox, via KCPQ-13), two Judge Judy episodes from July 1999 taped off KCPQ, Wonder Years reruns from Nick at Nite, etc. most w/ commercials.

Trying to clear them out is a challenge because nobody wants them on the "Mer..." site!! I have had one recorded VHS and one recorded Beta lot up w/ no takers on either.

Great stuff as always Pannoni1, I wonder what year they decided to keep primetime blocks as is, and not "join them in progress"? These days the NFL games always seem to run long on Sundays but 60 Minutes seems to be shown in its entirety but that definitely was not the case in the 1990s. I'd love to see some of those TV movies in the future...
I'd say it was the mid-90s, as i remember NBC showing the premiere of "Earth 2" in its entirety after "bonus coverage" of a Bengals-Seahawks game in 1994 or 95 (can't remember the year). I wonder if the only reason that they joined the movie in progress was that the President's speech wasn't planned until like the day before whereas they knew football was going to run long a bit in advance.

I recently found a copy of Earth 2, which aired on November 6, 1994, the same night of the network premiere of Star Trek VI that I also found in my latest VHS tape lot last week. The recording began during the intro however, so I can't confirm that it was the Bengals-Seahawks gain, but I take your word for it. Oddly, despite airing on the same night on the same station, WTHR, the recorder used a different tape for each movie. There was also pre-emptions for a Presidential address the following month and I have special reports from both ABC and NBC from the same night, where ABC aired Elvis: The Tribute uncut by simply rejoining at the point where they broke while NBC simply aired the special report between the end of Friends and the Start of Seinfeld. I also have an episode of Falcon Crest from May 1989 which had a break-in for the Tiananmen Square protests a few minutes into the episode, but CBS aired the remainder of the show in its entirety. All that would mean was a few minutes of CBS News Nightwatch would be pre-empt (and usually was repeated in part since the broadcast was two hours, with any additional time before the morning shows began being repeated). 60 Minutes easily had the luxury of airing those stories the following summer in case of pre-emption, but by the '90s, most primetime scripted shows and movies were shown in full, provided that a local affiliate didn't pre-empt them.

I got my Insignia back from the repair shop last week, but the audio problem was still present on the unit! I bought a unit of the exact same make and model from an eBay seller in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and verified with the seller that it was in good working condition. Only problem now--this new unit is stuck at the USPS regional distribution hub in Indianapolis--in the completely opposite direction of where this thing is supposed to go! After doing some digging, I found out this isn't a new thing at that particular center apparently, and I wish I would have known this before I had made this purchase.

I don't know what to be more upset at, the fact that I wasted $130 on a bogus repair job or the fact that I have no clue when this new VCR/DVD recorder is going to leave Indianapolis and get here. In the meantime, I have 48 unsearched VHS tapes sitting here and I'm hoping they don't degrade in any way, shape or form until I can get a decent problem-free machine to play them back on.

Do they have any warranties on their repairs? The last time I had to get a VCR repaired was 20 years ago and they had a 30 day warranty on any work they did. Since then I just bought any VCR unit that tested well at a thrift store, and lucky I did as they have been mostly absent from any thrift stores for the past 5 years or so. I've stacked up at least a dozen decks at this point, but few of the VHS/DVD variety.

I just checked another batch of tapes this weekend from that local seller that I had previously dealt with from posts #2243, #2246 #2258, and #2264. I won't list everything that I've found, but here is a sampling (all with commercials except as noted):

-A partial broadcast of the 700 Club off WDCA in December 1983 or 1984
-Three pledge breaks off WDCA on 3/10/1984 (from for Who The Bell Tolls)
-A full newscast off WDVM on 11/13/1984 (tape contained the first two installments of the Ellis Island miniseries, with most of the commercial breaks paused out except for the last two, the tape continues with about the first ten minutes of a CBS Late Night airing of The Fall Guy)
-A summer rerun of Spenser: For Hire from 7/1/1986 off WJLA
-More 1986 Liberty Weekend coverage that I don't have from 7/4/1986, about 30 minutes off KFMB/CBS and about an hour off KGTV/ABC, my only off-market find
-A syndicated rerun of Knight Rider on Halloween Day 1989 off WNUV
-Partial episodes of Sally Jessy Raphael and The Price Is Right from October 1989 with commercials. The TPIR episode is from 10/11/1989 off W*USA and begins near the end of the first Showcase Showdown and continues through the sixth Pricing Game
-Most of Dallas, the W*USA 11 PM News, and the first 17 minutes of Music Video Connection off W*USA 9 on 3/30/1990. I've already got that Dallas broadcast, but local music shows are rare finds
-Part of Herman's Head from 8/16/1992 off WTTG/FOX (a summer rerun), as well as nearly half of Geraldo and about the first ten minutes of ABC's Home off WJLA on 2/10/1992, with that clip of Home featuring a sampler of some of the latest toys courtesy of the National Toy Fair
-The last ten minutes of the WJLA 5 PM News, the WJLA 6 PM News, and about the first ten minutes of ABC World News Tonight from 11/3/1993
-A partial episode of The Gordon Elliott Show from April 1996 off WTTG
-The Mysteries of the Millennium special as well as the network premiere of Silence of the Lambs off W*USA/CBS on 5/1/1996 with commercials, followed by an episode of Sightings and NHRA action with the Pennzoil Nationals off WJLA on 5/4/1996

A couple dozen tapes with anywhere from a single commercial break to several on them from the mid-80s to the late '90s as well as a few with PBS promos, with the newest recorded tape containing an episode of Charlie Rose from 3/4/2000. There were some disappoints of course, such as a couple more adult video tapes (even including a retail RCA copy of the 1986 Stevie Nicks music video collection taped over), along with the usual collection of movie and PBS duds, along with two VHS rewinders that turned out to have bitten the dust. Well, I'm back in the office full-time next month, so I may slow down a bit, but I wasn't teleworking until COVID hit, so I'll still have plenty of new stuff to come across, plus hopefully, yard sale season isn't too far away.

Well, I finally got the "new" Insignia I ordered from eBay and I have a HUGE backlog of content just from two estate sales in two weeks at one house in Parma, not counting the tapes I've obtained since then that I haven't gone through yet. This one house in Parma in particular had not only a lot of VHS tapes but a lot of Betamax tapes as well. The first time I stopped by this place was in December, and then just after the holidays, they held the sale for a second week where I found even more tapes than I did the last time. All the Beta tapes I have listed below are from the second week the sale was held. The VHS tapes are from both the first and second weeks of the sale.
As I may have mentioned after I first stopped by there, I found quite a few recordings of Cinemax After Dark shows and movies ranging from the early '90s to the early 2010s, along with a Beta tape of Playboy Channel shows and movies from 1983. Now that I got that out of the way, here's what else I ended up finding just from this house alone.

I'm nowhere near done searching through tapes, as I have bought more from two other estate sales and a seller on M****** in Goshen, Indiana since that time, but I'll get to logging those later.

One of the things about that aforementioned site above is that the location of the seller is at some form a surprise, sometimes providing just the state, other times, nothing at all. As it turns out, I just bought a lot of tapes from that same site, and as it turned out, the seller was from your own market. The latest VHS lot that I hunted was within easy yard sale distance from Scott2013, with one tape having a Medina, OH address label on it (Harding Street, full of 1950s-60s ranchers). 50 tapes were searched, with about half being duds and about seven being sell pile items, with the newest recorded content being multiple presentations of Lethal Weapon 4 and We Were Soldiers off TNT on 11/7/2004, with the Dinotopia special off WEWS/ABC on 12/19/2002 also among the finds. There was also a tape with TBS commercials from 1991 from a non-original movie, about the last 15 minutes of a 1999 episode of As The World Turns, a partial Disney Channel preview special from 2/17/1991, and a few commercials from a 1990 compilation of Dick Van Dyke Show recordings off WOIO.

All finds are in EP mode unless otherwise stated.

TAPE 1: Begins with The Devil's Advocate (1997) taped off Request Pay-Per-View in April 1998 with a few minutes of promos following the movie, followed by approximately the last 25 minutes of Guiding Light off WOIO/CBS on 4/24/1997 with commercials, followed by episodes of The Young and the Restless and Guiding Light off WOIO/CBS on 4/25/1997 with commercials, followed by the last several minutes of Guiding Light and the first few minutes of In Person off WOIO on 10/17/1996 with a few commercials. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 2: China Syndrome taped off TNT on 3/21/1996 with commercials, followed by Mermaids (1990) taped off Lifetime on 3/23/1996 with commercials. Kodak T-120.

TAPE 3: Two sets of episodes of The Young & The Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful and Guiding Light on consecutive days off WOIO/CBS on 2/3 and 2/4/1997 with commercials, followed by another episode of Guiding Light off WOIO/CBS on 1/24/1997 with commercials. TDK T-120.

TDK T-120.

TAPE 5: Motown 30: What's Goin' On recorded off WKYC/NBC on 11/25/1990 with no commercials, followed by the Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) taped off Showtime circa late 1990 with no promos, followed by ABC News Nightline on 12/3/1990 with commercials (Madonna interview and "Justify My Love" world premiere video, I've recently found part of this in B&W with commercials along with the last few minutes, so I now have a complete broadcast), followed by part of the 3rd Annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards off WGN on 9/5/1997 with no commercials, followed by The World's Greatest Magic taped off WKYC/NBC in 1997 with no commercials. Kodak T-120.

TAPE 6: 4 1/2 hours from the HBO Def Comedy Jam New Year's marathon, followed by Chimps, The Making of Blank, and part of Beethoven Lives Upstairs taped off HBO on New Year's Day 1996 with promos after each program. Memorex T-120.

TAPE 7: A rerun of the first free parts Lonesome Dove off WJW/CBS on 1/20, 1/22, and 1/23/1991 with commercials. There's also a very brief tapeover of a Cavs NBA game and a snippet of Preview Guide early in part III. I've already got the original airings off KREM from a 2017 Beta lot. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 8: Six hours worth of footage from the 1994 Winter Olympics from Lillehammer, mostly featuring the figure skating events, but also includes a bit of the Speed Skating competition and part of the closing ceremony. Recorded off WJW/CBS on 2/21/1994 with most commercials when applicable, including a lengthy newsbreak. BASF T-120

TAPE 9: High Plains Drifter (1973) and Two Mules For Sister Sara (1970) taped off TBS in 1992 with commercials, followed by the last ten minutes of the short-lived medical drama Human Factor and the first 20 minutes of the WJW 11 PM News from 5/28/1992 with commercials, then it cuts to about the last 25 minutes of One Life To Live, General Hospital, and the first couple minutes of Oprah Winfrey off WEWS/ABC on 5/26/1992 with commercials. I've already got that day's GH episode off WTSP from a 2020 lot. Focal T-120.

TAPE 10: Messenger of Death (1988), Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987), and Running Wild (1975) copied off rentals or pay TV with no promos, followed by about the last 20 minutes of the ABC Monday Night Movie presentation of Rock Hudson off WEWS on 1/8/1990 with a few commercials, followed by most of an episode of Days of our Lives off WKYC/NBC in January 1990 with commercials. GE T-120.

TAPE 11: Tecumseh: The Last Warrior (1995) taped off TNT on 6/6/1995 with commercials and local Cleveland inserts (most TNT recordings from the '90s had them), followed by Legends of the Fall (1994) recorded TWICE off an unknown pay TV station; the first recording was missing the first couple minutes while the tape ran out during the credits on the second copy. Fuji Super HG T-120.

TAPE 12: Winter is giving way to spring, but when it returns, I'll certainly be enjoying these festive shows once again, starting off with a Bob Hope Christmas special from Hawaii off WKYC/NBC on 12/16/1989 with commercials, followed by a rerun of A Christmas Carol (1984) off WJW/CBS on 12/24/1989 with ads, followed by a WEWS Singing Angels special on Christmas night 1989 with a few ads, followed by Walt Disney World's Very Merry Christmas Parade off WEWS/ABC from Christmas morning 1989 with commercials, cutting off right before the credits. FUJI Super HG T-120.

TAPE 13: Starts off with the Guns of Diablo (1964) taped off TNT on 3/21/1992 with commercials, followed by about 25 minutes of Prevue Guide footage from the same day, then it cuts to the last 25 minutes of Rude Awakening (1989), Hard Copy, and the first five minutes of the short-lived 1991-92 version of Candid Camera, taped off WEWS on 3/13-14/1992 with commercials. Polaroid T-120

TAPE 14: The Lifetime Original Movie of Sudie & Simpson from 9/17/1990 with commercials, followed by about the last 30 minutes of How The West Was Won (1962) off TBS on 11/26/1990 with commercials, followed by about the last ten minutes of Days of Our Lives, a brief clip of Prevue Guide, and episodes of One Life To Live and General Hospital off WKYC/NBC and WEWS/ABC on 9/19/1990 with commercials. Focal T-120.

TAPE 15: Kickboxer (1989) taped off of Showtime circa 1990 with no promos, followed by about the first 15 minutes of Days of our Lives off WKYC/NBC in September 1990 with a few promos, followed by about 10 minutes of Prevue Guide footage on 9/8/1990, followed by about 40 minutes of WCW Wrestling off TBS and Dallas (1950) from the same day with some commercials, followed by about another 40 minutes of WCW Wrestling off TBS from late September 1990 with a few commercials. I thought I'd get the "J.R. Show" based on the label, but as it turns out, it was that obscure Gary Cooper flick. Memorex T-120.

TAPE 16: The 1994 European Figure Skating Champions taped off WKYC/NBC on 2/5/1994 with commercials, followed by IBM Skates Of Gold off WEWS/ABC from the same day with ads, followed by about two hours worth of Lillehammer Winter Olympics footage of various figure skating competitions off TNT and WJW/CBS on 2/16 and 2/20/1994 with some commercials. Memorex T-120

TAPE 17: Starts off with about 35 minutes of static, then it jumps to around 40 minutes worth of footage from the CBS Sunday Movie presentation off WJW 11/29/1987 with commercials, followed by about the last eight minutes of My Two Dads, the NBC Sunday Night At The Movies flick Downpayment of Murder (those mall scenes really take me back), along with most of the WKYC 11 PM News from 12/6/1987 with commercials, then it jumps to just over an hour from the NBC Monday Movie presentation of In Love In War off WKYC on 3/16/1987 with commercials. Unfortunately, the tape stock was a circa 1984 Scotch T-120 which tend to be snappy (even more so on Beta tapes), and had to manually rewind with about 40 minutes remaining on the tape, so I'll have to wait until I record this tape to see if the rest of the movie, including another possible channel 3 newscast is present.

TAPE 18: Porgy and Bess (1993) taped off WVIZ/PBS with no promos, followed by Ain't No Children Here, the ABC Theater presentation off WEWS on 11/28/93 with no commercials, followed by the 26th annual NAACP Image Awards off WKYC/NBC on 1/22/1994 with no commercials. Sony T-160. Even though there's no ads on this tape, there are only a few scattered clips from that special online, and this stood in for SNL that night.

Nice find on that partial NBC Saturday Morning block, Scott from 1989, and its always touching to find anything Roy Orbison shortly before his unexpected fatal heart attack.

The National Toy Fair was that Marc Summers of Double Dare and Unerspped fame covering it?

No, but another game show personality was featured in that clip: Vanna White to promote the latest home version of Wheel of Fortune by Tyco. Land of the Lost's Stink also made a cameo.

A quick lot of 11 Betas came in the mail yesterday, arriving barely 24 hours after I purchased it on eBay. Many of the labels consisted of thinks ranging from "Walt Disney" to "Christmas Shows" to "He-Man" to "Children's Shows". Ten of the tapes were off-air recordings, the 11th (which the seller forgot to place in a special file that consisted of digitized family movie recordings), consisted of Betacam family movies from the early to-mid '80s, with a mostly unremarkable assortment of footage as you may expect (birthday party, Christmas, summer at the home swimming pool and the beach), although there was a brief trip to South America, including a trip to Machu Picchu circa 1981 (a brief snippet of Reagan's first Inauguration is also present, as is a scene at Baltimore's then-new Harborplace). There was even a scene with a preschool-aged boy riding on a rocking horse set to then-modern Top 40 songs such as "Wet My Whistle" and "Love Is A Battlefield", but the audio quality of course was noticeably out of tune. One of the other tapes was a total dud. Two tapes consisted of two The Wonderful World of Disney syndicated broadcasts recorded off WMPT in 1988 with one tape having a few minutes of promos near the end, another having a long promo break in between the two shows, including a network promo for the shows that Maryland Public Television produced, including the upcoming series Time Line. Another consisted of Pete's Dragon (1977) taped off WDCA circa 1989 with almost no commercials as well an episode of Slimer! And The Real Ghostbusters from late 1988 or 1989 off WJLA or WJZ with only one commercial break intact (too bad, it's akin to finding a lose Slimer figure at a store, but with only the card from the back of the original packaging). Another tape suffered from a sticky reverse that caused the tape to snap and kept on snapping frequently until well past the halfway mark before it settled down, only yielding the last 30 minutes of Disney's "The Flight Of The Grey Wolf" off WJZ on 4/30/88 with a couple commercial breaks before ending during the intro to the PBA's $250,000 Tournament of Champions. But the other five tapes mostly delivered:

TAPE 1: Begins with a 1973 documentary on Hanukkah, followed by the classic children's specials The Velveteen Rabbit and The Snowman off WETA on 12/7/1985 with promos after each program along with a pledge break, followed by a syndicated rerun of the Wonderful World of Disney's Dumbo and the first half of a syndicated rerun of The Fall Guy off WTTG on 12/8/1989 with commercials. BIII mode, mid-80s Sony L-750

TAPE 2: Charlotte's Web (1973) taped off WTTG on 11/10/1985 with commercials (including one for Heart's 1985 album), followed by the classic Rankin-Bass holiday specials The Little Drummer Boy Book II (1976), Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey (1976), and part of Pinocchio's Christmas (1980) taped off presumably WTTG circa December 1985 with no commercials. Too bad that He-Man didn't appear despite what label said, getting instead "Wilbur" as written below it. BII mode, mid-80s Sony L-750

TAPE 3: My pick of the lot, begins with The Wizard Of Oz (1939) taped off WDVM/CBS in 1985 with commercials (I've found the '84 and '86 broadcasts with ads already, but this compilation includes the full version of the Lionel Richie Pepsi ad), followed by part of the We Are The World music video (hard to believe that this Friday is the 40th anniversary of the single's release), followed by the Witch's Night Out special taped off WTTG on 10/26/1986 with commercials, followed by most of Fat Albert's Halloween Special (1984) taped off WTTG on 10/27/1986 with commercials. BII mode, mid-80s Sony L-750

TAPE 4: Another broadcast of The Snowman off WETA circa 1986, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978) taped off presumably WETA on 12/14/1986 with no promos, followed by Rudolph's Shiny New Year taped off WTTG on 12/16/1986 with commercials, followed by How The Grinch Stole Christmas and about half of T'was The Night Before Christmas taped off W*USA/CBS on 12/17/1986 with commercials. BII mode, Memorex L-750

TAPE 5: A Disney Christmas Gift (1983) taped off an unknown station circa 1987 with no commercials, followed by Frosty The Snowman and another broadcast of T'was The Night Before Christmas taped off W*USA/CBS on 12/9/1987 with some commercials, followed by A Mouse, A Mystery and Me recorded off presumably WRC/NBC on 12/13/1987 with no commercials. BII mode, Maxell L-750

Ah, Harding Street, I know where that is in Medina. I'm sure you probably found some local inserts from Armstrong Cable in the cable recordings from that lot. I feel like it's been a little while since I've been to an estate sale in Medina, as many of the sales I've been to lately have been in Parma or Parma Heights near one of my jobs because, well, that's where many of them have been popping up lately compared to Medina.
My aunt used to do the same thing with the CBS soap operas like on the first tape in your Medina lot, where she would record Y&R, B&B and GL but not ATWT. I wonder if she still has any of her tapes. She hasn't used a VCR in quite some time, so I personally doubt it, but you never know. She got her first VCR in the mid '80s but didn't get cable until 1999. She lives in Broadview Heights, so she had Cox Cable, but for the last ten years or so, she's had U-Verse. I remember my mom would occasionally tape some shows on cable channels and give the tapes to my aunt before she subscribed to Cox. If I remember correctly, one of them was an Ed Sullivan special on the Family Channel in the mid '90s and another was an A&E documentary called Big Dogs, Little Dogs.

Here's what I ended up finding from another estate sale in Parma a few weeks back. This one in particular had several boxes and tubs worth of these tapes, so I feel like I didn't even scratch the surface of what was there.
TAPE 1: Rerun of a special two-hour episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition taped from TV Land on 10/4/2008 with commercials. Fuji T-120.

TAPE 2: Seven episodes of Quincy taped from WCLQ in March 1986 with commercials on the first, second and seventh episodes only. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 3: The Dog Who Saved Christmas (made-for-TV movie) taped from ABC Family on 11/29/2009 with commercials; partial UPN Friday Movie presentation of Bad Boys (1995) taped from WUAB on 10/26/2001 with commercials; Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge (made-for-TV movie) taped from the Disney Channel on 10/26/2001 with promos; end of Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire taped from the Disney Channel on 10/26/2001 with promos; Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video taped from MTV on 10/27/2001, includes a bit of scrolling through the Cox Digital Cable program guide; Saturday Night Live Halloween Special taped from WKYC on October 27-28, 2001 minus commercials; partial broadcast of Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922) taped from IFC in October 2001 with promos. JVC T-120.

TAPE 4: Eight episodes of Maury taped from WJW on 7/21/1999, 7/22/1999, 7/27/1999, 7/29/1999, 8/4/1999, 8/9/1999, 8/10/1999 and 8/13/1999 with commercials. Sony T-160.

TAPE 5: CMT Comedy Stage: Terry Fator Live from Las Vegas taped from CMT on 8/29/2009 with commercials. Sony T-120.

TAPE 6: Weekend Movie presentation of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (1984 made-for-TV movie) taped from WUAB in December 1985 with commercials; almost four hours of the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon taped from WJKW on 9/2/1985 complete with local segments with Dick Goddard, Denise D'Ascenzo and Big Chuck and Lil John. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 7: Partial broadcast of $20 Kitchen Basics, Quick & Easy Cooking and partial broadcast of Problem Solvers taped from QVC on October 17-18, 1999 with commercials. Sony T-160.

TAPE 8: The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975) taped from the Disney Channel circa 1990; Mister Ed, Bewitched, Green Acres, The Patty Duke Show, The Best of Saturday Night Live, Make Room for Daddy and Dennis the Menace taped from Nick at Nite on 7/1/1990 minus most commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 9: From Martha's Kitchen taped from Food Network in March 2001 with commercials; Simply Quilts and The Carol Duvall Show taped from HGTV in March 2001 with commercials; The Carol Duvall Show and most of Sew Perfect taped from HGTV in March 2001 with commercials; partial episode of Sew Perfect taped from HGTV in March 2001 with commercials; Simply Quilts taped from HGTV in March 2001 with commercials; The Carol Duvall Show taped from HGTV in March 2001 with commercials; Sew Perfect taped from HGTV on 3/30/2001 with commercials; DIY Crafts taped from DIY Network on 3/30/2001 minus commercials; most of From Martha's Kitchen taped from Food Network on 3/30/2001 with commercials; The Carol Duvall Show taped from HGTV on 3/31/2001 with commercials; Crafty Kids taped from DIY Network in April 2001 with commercials. Sony T-160.

TAPE 10: Partial episode of Oprah taped from WEWS on 5/12/1995 with commercials; Oprah, Live on Five and partial broadcast of News Channel 5 at 6:00 taped from WEWS on 5/19/1995 with commercials. Memorex T-120.

TAPE 11: Partial episode of Gomer Pyle USMC, Emergency, Dragnet and Adam-12 taped from TV Land in December 1999 with commercials; partial episode of Aleene's Creative Living taped from TNN in December 1999 with commercials; partial episode of Maude, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC and Emergency taped from TV Land in December 1999 with commercials; end of Maude, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle USMC and Emergency taped from TV Land in December 1999 with commercials; Maury ("I May Look Different...But I'm a Superstar!") taped from WJW on 2/8/2000 with commercials. Sony T-160.

TAPE 12: Partial episode of Emeril Live and In Food Today: The Way We Were taped from Food Network in July 1999 with commercials; Two Fat Ladies (special tribute to Jennifer Paterson) taped from Food Network in August 1999 with commercials; Two Fat Ladies taped from Food Network on April 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, 2000 with commercials; Jennifer Paterson: One Fat Lady, One Large Life taped from Food Network on 4/9/2000 with commercials. Sony T-160.

As I mentioned, a LOT more tapes were left behind. I saw several more with labels indicating more QVC and HGTV programming, more Quincy episodes and more that I can't think of now! There were even some T-180s and T-200s in at least one of the boxes, including a BASF T-200 supposedly containing HSN programming.

A more recent but much smaller estate sale haul yielded something really interesting--a tape of network shows recorded from affiliates in Honolulu, Hawaii! More on that later. And I still need to check out the stuff I got from Goshen, Indiana in more depth. At first glance, I've found some more '90s talk shows (Phil Donahue, Maury Povich), Denise Austin on Lifetime, mid-2000s Hallmark Channel movies, episodes of Due South and recordings of movies on HBO (not 18+ like quite a bit of what I've found recently in Parma).

Michael Jackson’s Thriller on MTV in 2001?! Say it ain’t so!

NICE find Scott! Jerry Lewis Telethon?! I've been searching for many years to find a local broadcast of the telethon. You'd think by now I'd find at least one broadcast from KAPP Yakima, given the immense star power. I still watch the clip where Dean Martin surprises Jerry, once in a while on YouTube (1976) and it never gets old.

I've found an over an hours' worth of coverage of the 1986 Jerry Lewis telethon way back in 2015 from that massive MA/RI lot I've mentioned several times, recorded off a Providence, RI station, but it didn't feature any local coverage.

I happened to do a quick hit at my local Goodwill today while waiting for carryout at the Berrtucci's right across the parking lot from it. For the first time in many years, the nearest Goodwill (not an outlet) actually had a blank tape in stock. With no hint of use other than the tape being about halfway wound up, I decided to give it a shot for a buck. It was nothing but net, and it's very seasonally appropriate:

VHS TAPE: Part of the Gonzaga vs. Maryland first round NCAA tournament game, recorded off WJZ/CBS on 3/16/1995 with commercials and halftime, beginning about a minute into the game before ending a couple minutes into the second half, followed by part of the Maryland-Duke NCAA regular season game (Joe Smith's buzzer-beater), beginning just before halftime, as well as part of the Syracuse-St. John's game (ends during halftime), recorded off ESPN on 3/1/1995 with commercials, with some Montgomery County, MD inserts. A VERY early commercial featuring the CBS web address (still www.cbs.com, with the http:// of course) was featured during one of the ads during the halftime break of the first game. Bonus coverage clips of the Michigan-Western Kentucky and Tulane-BYU games were featured during the intermission as well. Konica Super SR T-120, LP mode.

Hopefully this is a good omen that the Terps will go far this year, given that they've been known to struggle in March in recent years!

Some AMAZING stuff Chandler. When are you getting this stuff uploaded to YouTube or the Archive?
283, 294 and 296 were most definitely from the Telstar 301 ABC east coast feed. Black screen during breaks? Color bars after the Weekend Report? Yup, can't be a local affiliate. What commercials were being cued up during the off-air period? I guess promos for ABC shows? Or were they random commercials for cars and fast food restaurants?

Ghost Dad is a terrible movie, and why anyone would tape it, I have no idea.

Whole weeks' worth of General Hospital is nice... is the Biography on the same Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame? I've got that same ET Weekend from 1994. Classic Nickelodeon - and game shows!!! I've collected recorded VHS for 10+ years and have only found a 5-minute bonus round clip from Double Dare in 1000+ tapes - nothing from any other Nick game show. No Guts, no Legends of the Hidden Temple, and no Figure it Out either. I've got 'What Love Sees' from KIMA. The Brisco County Jr. premiere is a great find! I've got the Friends finale and 10 Years of Friends as well (KNDO taping); which area did the Prevue Channel listings come from? And a KIRO Seattle find...in a North Carolina Goodwill bin?! My goodness, that must be a record for the "furthest distance a Seattle recording was found on VHS". I thought it was strange to find Portland and Seattle tapings on my last trip to western Montana. I'd figure most MT transplants were ex-Californians, just like a lot of the people in the Treasure Valley.

Nothing new this winter. Last week I went down to Nampa (Boise suburb) for possible VHS at an estate sale. They were gone when I got there. "Some old folks' home took them all." $%&@!! And there were RECORDED tapes in that bunch.
At least I got away with a ton of old postcards at another estate sale, plus some vintage magazines (1969 Car & Driver, etc.) I've got 300 tapes to go through anyway from old stock. Going through a KIRO recording of "Police Academy 3" this weekend, 8/29/1989 with commercials from that giant July 2020 Ellensburg estate sale where I loaded two cars with 500+ VHS tapes. One of the breaks has a custom "Get Ready for CBS" promo with KIRO personalities (Steve Raible, etc.) and clips of the talk shows they aired.

The Byron Allen show was called Kickin' It. Not "Hangin' with". I have a couple of opening segments from late '90s broadcasts of Entertainers.

The big problem I have right now is that the guy who used to do all my conversions stopped awhile back so tapes are piling in bins. Obviously anything I list here I'm keeping and hopefully eventually getting converted. I did a few conversions myself years ago but was not happy with the results, I assume the equipment has improved since then? I assume I'd need a newer laptop than the 4 year old Lenovo I have as memory would be a factor.

That being said, the few conversions of note I've posted to Archive are here: Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Texts, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine

Alot of what I have now is old backlog from a huge Greensboro Craigslist find I got all the way back in 2019, this artsy fellow was dumping his whole VHS collection, over a decade's worth starting maybe 1987 ending 1998 or so, maybe 500 tapes. About 100-150 were beyond saving as they were deeply caked in mold and had some sort of water damage but the other 350 weren't bad. Tape #320 comprises a typical find from his collection, all WFMY/WXII/WGHP some complete shows, some commercials cut, but nearly all jammed to the brim with 6+ hours of content.

Believe it or not I've not found anything from the Goodwill bins recently, but more thrift stores are starting to sell recorded blanks finally. Maybe its the fact that physical media will become rarer as more stores stop selling new DVDs, Blurays, etc.
