Chandler keeps finding amazing stuff. Early '80s Donahue, SNL (Siskel & Ebert were on an episode?!), American Bandstand specials...Star Trek TNG, etc etc.
I've still got about 20 tapes to check from the latest Boise lots. In fact, I grabbed another dozen+ tapes on Saturday in Boise's North End before I left Monday morning for Yakima WA. So far there are some pay-TV/AMC duds, but I did find a 1991 TNT broadcast of "Tip on a Dead Jockey" and most of a Gilligan's Island episode with commercials, and the 12/3/1989 "Shell Seekers" Hallmark Hall of Fame w/ commercials off KIVI/ABC. I already have it from KOMO-4 Seattle.
On my way to Yakima I pulled into the Pasco Goodwill Outlet and picked out five home-recorded tapes, no VCR at the moment so I can't check them. Actually, there were quite a few rental/retail VHS tapes in the bins and conveyors on Monday morning. I picked up "Midnight Crossing" with Faye Dunaway, original Vestron release. No horror films.

I just checked out another 22 Beta tape lot from a seller from the Denver suburbs. A bonus included eight extra tapes, all retail and without their cases, so except for a copy of Rambo: First Blood that had about six minutes of promos after movie, aren't really worth keeping were also included. There were a fair number of rental duds as well as a few "pass pile" tapes, including one tape with parts of the 1986 Fresno and Anastasia miniseries that I've already found on two of the tapes as well as a broadcast of Death Of The Nile from Labor Day weekend 1986 that only had a few commercials. Two other pass pile tapes included one tape, with a label of "Videos 85" along the side label that included a bit by bit (to quote Stephanie Mills whose video was on that tape) approach to recording a few videos at a time, then recording more later for another day. This consisted of a bunch of videos recorded circa May-October 1985 mostly off episodes of Friday Night Videos, New York Hot Tracks, and even a little from KBDI's Teletunes (see the unusual programming on PBS educational stations more for more details). Just one complete commercial break as well as a couple others with lone spots for Agree shampoo and the Chevy Chase movie "Fletch". Another tape had a similar "little by little" approach that said "Videos Done" on the side label and essentially was a continuation of that other tape and continued on through around the summer of 1986, including Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" video. These are what I call "nice to casually watch, but not to collect"-type tapes. Still, there were a few finds:

TAPE 1: Ewoks: The Battle For Endor (ABC premiere presentation) taped off KUSA/ABC on 11/23/1985 with most commercials (no closing), followed by Flashdance (1983) taped off KCNC/NBC on 2/17/1986 with commercials (I've already got this off KYW, which was one of my first finds back in 2015), followed by a brief clip from a local PM Magazine show and the first 20 minutes of Bizarre circa February/March 1986 off KDVR with commercials. Sony L-750, BIII mode

TAPE 2: The Wizard Of Oz (1939) presumably taped off KMGH/CBS on 3/1986 with no commercials, followed by The Colbys and the opening to 20/20 taped off KUSA/ABC on 2/27/1986 with commercials, followed by the last hour or so of an unknown movie off KDVR circa early 1986 with no commercials, followed by most of Miami Vice (begins ten minutes into the episode) recorded off KCNC/NBC on 1/3/1986 (a rerun of the 10/18/85 episode) with commercials. Sony Dynamicron ES HG L-750, BIII mode

TAPE 3: Stand By Me (1986) copied by a rental, followed by part of the raw CBS C-band feed broadcast of Super Bowl XXI between the Denver Broncos and New York Giants (begins just after halftime) from 1/25/1987 with footage during the commercial breaks (often blimp shots), except during the postgame with has just blank video, followed by clips of the Broncos Super Bowl parade off KCNC and KUSA from later that week with no commercials (despite being defeated; anybody know of any other stations that broadcast coverage of these parades for non-winning teams?) from later that week. Fuji Super HG L-750, BIII mode

TAPE 4: Starts off with a six minute clip of KBDI Lilias' exercise show from sometime in the late '80s, followed by short clips of Hard Copy and Barney Miller off unknown stations circa 1990, followed by about the last two hours of Zulu (1964) and the first ten minutes of Carson's Comedy Classics recorded off KDVR on 3/9/1987 with commercials. Sony L-750, BIII mode

TAPE 5: The Buccaneer (1938) along with most of a classic episode of Make Room For Daddy taped off KOVR circa 1988, commercial-free during the movie and two commercial breaks intact during the '50s sitcom, followed by most of part two of Shaka Zulu (1987, begins about 15 minutes into the miniseries installment) recorded off KDVR on 5/10/1988 with commercials, followed by most of the KUSA 5 PM News and the first few minutes of the sitcom Throb taped off Denver's channel 9 on 10/3/1987 with commercials. Sony L-750, BIII mode

TAPE 6: The opening sequence to Private Resort (1985), followed about the last ten minutes of a roundtable talk show, a promo break, and most of Lilias' (fitness show) taped off KBDI in 1989. Sony Dynamicron HG L-125, BIII mode

TAPE 7: Most of a rerun of COPS taped off KDVR/FOX on 12/22/1990 with commercials, followed by a brief clip of Hard Copy (featuring fashion models) circa early 1991, followed by just over half of Knots Landing off KMGH/CBS on 9/20/1990 with commercials, followed by an episode of the CBS documentary series Top Cops recorded off presumably KMGH circa late summer/early fall 1990 with no commercials or closing, followed by Knots Landing and the first several minutes of the KMGH 10 PM News (top story is about an MLB expansion team) off KMGH/CBS on 5/10/1990 with commercials, followed by most of Night Heat and most of Love Connection off KMGH just after Thanksgiving 1989 with commercials. Sony L-750, BIIII mode. Unfortunately, the quality on this tape has seen better days, and the late night block has occasional video dropouts. I've also already got that 5/10/90 Knots Landing episode from a previous find.

TAPE 8: Starts off with The Trials of Rosie O'Neill and Knots Landing taped off KMGH/CBS on Halloween 1991 with commercials, followed by the last few minutes of Knots Landing, the KMGH 10 PM News, Love Connection, round one highlights of The Masters, the second episode of the Crimetime After Primetime series Fly By Night, and the first couple minutes of The Challengers recorded off KMGH/CBS on 4/11/1991 with commercials. Sony Dynamicron ES HG L-750, BIII mode

Wowza great content on Tape 8! Fly By Night does not exist in any home video form, and many episodes are STILL missing 30+ years later in all archives, so I'd love to see that. Crimetime After Primetime recordings in general are rare finds no matter the show though at least Silk Stalkings and Forever Knight got DVD releases. Trials of Rosie O'Neill is also another rare show that was never released on DVD. Those late night "leave it recording" finds are always gold and are probably the only reason old episodes of Love Connection and the late news even exist.

I don't think that was the main CBS affiliate feed you found. Sounds like a backhaul feed, given no commercials. Transmitted from the stadium to the CBS master control in NYC who would then cut to the commercial breaks and promos.
On my road trip back to WA, I stopped at some sales on the way back in north central ID (and also got tapes from the Pasco Goodwill 'bins'). Some of them were from Las Vegas stations, one of which was another "went to bed, left the VCR on" tape. Full 3/19-20/1991 aircheck of KLAS Las Vegas/CBS with commercials...The Wizard of Oz, Rescue 911, 11:00 news, Entertainment Tonight, CBS News America Tonight, Wiseguy and about 2/3rds of Night Heat!! That theme song is pure '80s gold!

Great find on that 1991/3/19-3/20 tape Crainbebo, interesting CBS sort of resurrected the long time CBS Late Night programming post failure of the Pat Sajak Show and before they started airing the Crimetime After Primetime schedule in April 1991. Night Heat was a staple of CBS Late Night in the 1980s, usually with 1 or 2 low budget TV movies from the 1970s or early 80s. I almost never find those blocks and I'm always looking online for them.

Michael, I just finished watching The Quiz Kids Challenge pilot and sizzle reel that The Game Show Vault formerly Wink Martindale’s channel posted. Quite coincidental you have the first few minutes of Throb a show that QKC’s host Jonathan Prince was on.

Long list of updates on my latest finds.

Schindler's List was shown on NBC that Sunday night without commercial interruption.
I've got the Beaches, Eloise at the Plaza, Dream West (1996 rerun, Family Channel), Disney's Greatest Hits on Ice, and "Jesus" broadcasts already. Surprised they didn't record Lonesome Dove, like 2-3 million other VCR owners across the US.

I am nearing a full list of the finds I have made over the past few weeks. Those Las Vegas recordings are really paying off. Ended up finding another "let it run" from KVVU (Fox 5), March 4th-5th, 1996. It includes personal first finds of Mark Walberg and Gabrielle's talk shows (Carteris, of Beverly Hills 90210 fame). Both lasted one season and had low ratings.

Interesting 'blank tape' story today...I have a new job cleaning vacation homes, either until I get another teaching job or (worst case scenario) I keep it through the fall and into winter 2026. It pays really well. Was out cleaning a vacation home up towards McCall today. The upstairs living space has an HDTV, a VCR-DVD combo (Magnavox), and a whole bunch of VHS and DVD movies for the guests (and their kids). One of them was in a Memorex box and was marked "Casablanca". Lo and behold, during my lunch break, and after I sprayed and dusted and cleaned the upstairs, I checked the tape out. It ended up being the 12/12/1989 broadcast from TBS with commercials. So if the guests want, they can watch a time capsule on vacation. There's also a TDK tape marked "Austin Powers", and I'm leaning towards a pay cable or rental copy. The rest are commercial releases, usual '90s comedy/action and classic Westerns, including a bunch of Disney clamshells and random cartoon compilations. In the bunk bedroom is a Panasonic TV with a built-in VCR.

That blows my mind they have anything that plays physical formats, no less a VCR! The last 3 vacation places we stayed at it was a chore even getting the WiFi to work which was a necessity to do personal log-ins to Netflix, Hulu, etc. Having a physical option would have been great, as we just ended up watching Step Brothers anyways...

Over the past week, I've been busy checking three separate VHS lots, the first being a four-tape lot from Traverse City, the second a set of 15 from Newville, PA, and the third being a lot of 20 from Wichita. Mixed results on these tapes, with the first containing just early 2000s recordings despite being mid-80s Panasonic stock (and of course having Motor City recordings despite being located in a much smaller market), the second having a nice mix of finds including NHL games, a college football game, and some primetime content, with the Wichita lot being a mix of college sports, primetime, HBO, and even a couple personal camcorder recordings.

Traverse City lot (All recorded in EP mode)

TAPE 1: Starts off with the last few minutes of Dateline NBC followed by Detroit's Hudson's Fireworks on the Riverfront taped off WDIV on 6/28/2000 with commercials, followed by WJBK's 8th annual Salute to America from 7/2/2000 with commercials.

TAPE 2: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and part one of the Arabian Nights miniseries taped off WXYZ/ABC on 4/30/2000 with commercials, followed by another episode of WWTBAM and the second part of Arabian Nights off WXYZ/ABC on 5/1/2000 with commercials. The second Millionaire episode on this tape turned out to be the first ever celebrity episode, and while it was funny the first time, especially with Live co-host Kathie Lee Gifford as a contestant, I'd wish ABC would bring back civilian contestants for the current Jimmy Kimmel run.

The other two tapes from this lot had a couple episodes of The Practice and NYPD Blue from fall 2001 off WXYZ with commercials, but the quality was mediocre and I passed on those.

Newville, PA lot

Despite being located in South Central Pennsylvania, most recordings came off of Pittsburgh stations, with one tape coming out of the Scranton market.

TAPE 1: HBO World Championship Boxing featuring George Foreman and Michael More from 11/5/1994 with no promos, followed by the last few minutes of Face The Nation and most of The Penn State Football Story taped off KDKA/CBS on 11/6/1994 with commercials. LP mode for the boxing fight, SP mode for the KDKA portion

TAPE 2: Sphere (1998) recorded off HBO circa March 1999 with no promos, followed by most of Game 1 of the 1992 Patrick Division Finals NHL game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers taped off CAC Sports/KPL on 5/3/1992 with most commercials and part of the first intermission intact. EP mode

TAPE 3: Most of Full House, Home Improvement, Roseanne, and Coach (missing the closing) taped off WNEP/ABC on 2/18/1992 with commercials, followed by a complete primetime block of the same four sitcoms plus the ABC special Mobs and Mobsters taped off WNEP on 2/25/1992 with commercials, then it jumps to the last ten minutes of Whitney Houston's Welcome Home Heroes concert off HBO in March 1991, followed by the last ten minutes of Coach and the first few minutes of thirtysomething recorded off WTAE/ABC in early 1990 with commercials. EP mode for the 1992 ABC primetime blocks, SP for the rest. Unfortunately, the video quality is quite snowy for the 1992 blocks given that the recorder was probably visiting either a friend or family member who didn't have cable and was quite a hike or blocked by hills/mountains to pick up those stations. Still, the audio is clear and the video quality acceptable enough that you could imagine the quality in nicer condition or be reminded about living on the edge of a reception area.

TAPE 4: Pens At The Point: A Stanley Cup Celebration taped off KDKA on 5/28/1991 with commercials (this locally pre-empted The Young and The Restless), followed by the NBC Monday Night At The Movies presentation of Carolina Skeleton recorded off WPXI on 9/30/1991 with commercials (last appearance of the 1987-91 "rising filmstrips" intro and bumpers), followed by Postcards From The Edge (1990) taped off HBO in fall 1991 with no promos, followed by episodes of The Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, M.D, Sibs, and about two-thirds of Anything But Love taped off WTAE/ABC on 10/2/1991 with most commercials. I've previously found the episodes of The Wonder Years and Doogie on this block previously. EP mode

TAPE 5: Penn State Football Story recorded off KDKA on 11/12/1989 with commercials (a highlights show), followed by another episode of Penn State Football Story from 11/26/1989 off KDKA, about half of the pilot of America's Funniest Home Videos taped off WTAE/ABC with commercials from the same night, followed by most of the Fifty Years Of Television special taped off KDKA/CBS also from the same night (also got this already). LP mode

TAPE 6: Moonlighting (missing the closing) taped off WTAE/ABC on 1/19/1988 with commercials, followed by the 1988 NHL All-Star Game taped off ESPN on 2/9/1988 with commercials (the intermissions however were cut), followed by the first few minutes of AWA Championship Wrestling from the same night. EP mode

TAPE 7: Another episode of Moonlight taped off WTAE/ABC on 4/19/1988 with commercials (I've got this already), followed by the fourth season finale of Miami Vice off WPXI/NBC on 5/6/1988 with commercials (the seller had another lot with several Miami Vice tapes, but someone else snatched those before me), followed by part of an overnight rebroadcast of an NHL game between the Hartford Whalers and Pittsburgh Penguins (the regular season finale), followed by episodes of Getting Fit with Denise Austin, Gilad's Bodies In Motion, and a little over an hour of The Nation's Business Today taped off ESPN on 4/4/1988 with commercials. I find it strange that something more fitting on FNN (pre-CNBC days) would end up on ESPN. EP mode

There were also three duds, two tapes with the 1994 Scarlett miniseries that I've already got, the first installment of Children of the Dust from 1995 that I also have, A Painted House (2003) taped off The Hallmark Channel in November 2004 (featuring the newly shrunken "Sears" logo in one of the commercials, signaling its sad demise), and camcorder footage of the 1991 Elizabeth Forward High School commencement ceremony that I plan to post.

Wichita Lot

Nine keepers out of 20 here, with some rental/pay TV/camcorder duds (among them personal footage of the 2001 U.S. Open (Golf) and the 1992 Winston 500 (Talldega), and several passers including a 2005 college football game between Minnesota and Tulsa off ESPN with only a few commercials, a tape with just a two minute promo from the Univ. of Tulsa entitled "Thank Heaven for the Hurricane" about the basketball player, with the rest blank, the 1994 NBC Reba special with only a couple commercials that I've already got, a couple short clips from ABC Primetime Live and NBC's Today from 1993 with Dennis Byrd, and part of the Saturday Night Live 15th anniversary special, although that features a few commercials off KSNT in Wichita, including the 1989 "Come Home To The Best" station promo that I'll convert and post and part of a news update with a set that looks like its from 1977.

TAPE 1: The last two+ hours of the 1997 (British) Open golf tournament taped off KPVI/ABC on 7/20/1997 with commercials, followed by episodes of Idaho Crossroads, Martha Stewart Living, Bob Vila's Home Again, and the first 10 minutes of World CART Racing from Toronto taped off KIFT and KPVI from the same afternoon with commercials. This is my first find from Southeast Idaho, although I find it strange to be switching from their ABC to NBC stations and back. There was an even a commercial about the Oregon Trail golf course in Soda Springs (go figure, since this lot also contained my first ever Wichita find, which is the site of the first river crossing in that classic Apple II game. LP mode

TAPE 2: Intimate Portrait: Reba MacIntire taped off Lifetime on 5/19/1997 with commercials (missing the first 15 minutes), followed by the last 50 minutes of Truman (1995) taped off HBO on 9/12/1995, with a 23-minute promo break and the first several minutes of the HBO Comedy Half Hour following the movie. LP mode

TAPE 3: Starts off with the Cheers 200th episode celebration taped off KSNW/NBC on 11/8/1990 with commercials (I've got this as well), followed by most of Elvis (got this too along with the episode of Roseanne that precedes it on another lot) and thirtysomething (no closing) taped off KAKE/ABC on 2/6/1990 with commercials. LP mode for Cheers, SP for the ABC shows

TAPE 4: Most of the NCAA basketball game between Tulsa and Kansas State taped off ESPN (with local Wichita inserts) on 12/14/1989 with commercials and halftime, oddly with the recording going blank with still over six minutes to play and the game reasonably close. LP mode

TAPE 5: Jurassic Park (1993) and the first 15 minutes of the KSNW 10 PM News taped off KSNW/NBC on 5/7/1995 with commercials. I've already farmed these ads off WRC, but nice to have a partial smaller market newscast as well. LP mode

TAPE 6: Another copy of The Story Of Will Rogers taped off CBN in 1983 with commercials. I've also got a copy from 9/23/84, but these ads are different. Unfortunately, after switching to part of the 1981-84 NBC movie intro after the special, the rest of the tape is blank. EP mode

TAPE 7: Willie Nelson & Family (from the Austin Opera House) taped off HBO in April 1983 with no promos, followed by the Neewoolah (small Kansas town) Country Music Fest special also taped off HBO in April/May 1983 with no promos, followed by Television's Greatest Commercials III special (missing the intro) taped off KSNW/NBC on 5/8/1983 with the real commercials, including a promo for a time change for the wiped game show Dream House. I've not got all four TV's Greatest Commercials specials from 1982-83 with this find. EP mode

TAPE 8: An NCAA football game between Tulsa and Kansas taped off presumably KTVH/CBS on 10/2/1982 with a few commercials and a limited portion of halftime. A Youtuber has posted part of the game, but has edited out a lot of the stoppages between plays, so its still seen an upgrade and about double the runtime found there. EP mode (good quality given the speed and age)

TAPE 9: Features a trio of NCAA basketball games, starting off with Tulsa vs. Bradley taped off KTVH/CBS on 1/22/1983 with most commercials and halftime, followed by Creighton vs. Tulsa taped off the syndicated Missouri Valley Conference network on 1/30/1983 with very few commercials and part of the halftime, followed by another game between Bradley and Tulsa also off Missouri Valley Conference on 2/12/1983 with very few commercials, then it cuts to about an hour off the KAKE Saturday Great Movie presentation of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1975) from March 1982 with commercials. EP mode.

Nostalgic factor. I find today's commercials obnoxious, annoying, and terrible, way more than commercials in the '80s and '90s. Give me Whitney Houston singing for Diet Coke ANY DAY over that terrible, no-good Limu Emu and the dorky Doug, Flo for Progressive, and "Jardiance: The Musical."

My recent finds are listed below. First, Caldwell on June 13th. This yard sale had a couple of boxes of VHS tapes, many of which had one movie with a typed label and a long description and actor list on the front of the tape. Obviously rental dubs, so I didn't touch those. These are the keepers, all Portland TV.

Tape 1 - 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998), The Chris Rock Show and part of Reverb taped off HBO on 11/9/1999 with promos (a preview of their digital cable network, HBO Zone). TDK T-120 in LP, Hi-Fi
Tape 2 - Part 1 of Return to Lonesome Dove taped off KOIN-6 Portland/CBS on 11/14/1993 with commercials, and part 2 taped off KOIN/CBS on 11/16/1993 with commercials - already have this from KIMA, but here we are, 325 miles from Portland and still finding TV recordings from there. I did notice that some of the ex-rental tapes there came from a video store in Newberg, 20 miles south of Portland. Scotch T-120
Tape 3 - Part 3 of Return to Lonesome Dove taped off KOIN/CBS on 11/18/1993 with commercials (Already have this broadcast from both KOIN and KIMA, but this includes the open to NewsRoom 6 at 11). Scotch T-120
Tape 4 - Part 6 of War & Remembrance taped off KATU/ABC on 11/22/1988 with commercials; part 7 of War & Remembrance taped off KATU/ABC on 11/23/1988 with commercials; part of North & South: Book II taped off KATU/ABC on 5/11/1986 with commercials. Scotch T-120
Tape 5 - Parts 3, 4 and 5 of War & Remembrance taped off KATU/ABC on 11/16, 11/17 and 11/20/1988 with some commercials; part of North & South Book II (part 3) taped off KATU/ABC on 5/6/1986 with commercials. Certron T-120

6/21 - Beta tapes found at the Reuseum store in Boise (!!) and multiple VHS tapes from two sales in the North End, a yard sale and an estate sale.

BETA
Tape 1 - Starts with a 5th grade classroom 'career day' program and a puppet show (unknown school), cuts to part of '2010: The Year We Make Contact' (1984) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; brief clip of a Wichita newscast (either KSNW, KAKE or KWCH) circa April 1986; 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure' (1985) taped off unknown pay-TV channel circa 1987; ends with a treat - episode of M.A.S.K. taped off WPIX-11 New York City in September 1986 with commercials! Konica L-750
