Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Alright, some notes here:

394 - Have always wanted to find a taping of T&T. I don't think it was cleared here in Yakima (may have been in Boise), but the premise was simple: helping those who couldn't defend themselves. I don't think it's on DVD either.
398 - I already have a T-180 S-VHS tape. It has a bunch of February 1999 programs on it (Ally McBeal, Grammys, NYPD Blue) taped from Foxnet, WABC New York, and the WSEE C-Band feed ("SEE-CBS"). And yes, the quality is decent for SLP given S-VHS' higher resolution.
399 - Why tape a bunch of infomercials...in SP?
401 - Just weeks before PAX went to "i". Programming didn't start until 5 PM, with hours and hours of infomercials prior.
429 - I've got the E.T. broadcast (via KIMA Yakima). Has an 8-minute (?) Reading is Fundamental PSA video after the movie, with Fievel the Mouse.
430 - How many Heartland Music ads did you clock on that overnight TBS tape? I'll throw a prediction and say...eight? Including Slim Whitman?
440 - COOL FIND!!! If the ALCS game had the national ads on it, then this came from their East Coast satellite feed on Satcom F1, transponder 8. Most other NBC feeds would have been on Ku-Band. The slides/slates after the ALCS would have been in the 11/10c timeslot for local news. Normally, NBC would feed Skypath or whatever it was called, their news feed service. I assume NBC also fed pre-feeds, promos, and random stuff after David Letterman.

Wikipedia says T and T aired in syndication from 1988 to 1989. I'm not sure how that recording could have been from 1987. I do know it aired in reruns on the Family Channel later on though. Evidently, the Canadian counterpart of Adult Swim is still showing it in reruns.

The only T-180 I've ever found was a recording of overnight programs (documentaries) from the Classroom Channel, a.k.a. the Channel One Connection that many middle schools and high schools had in the '90s and 2000s. This recording was from 1996.
I have found a couple of T-200s as well. Both of those came from my mom's friend who has been slowly passing his VHS collection along to me. One has an episode of Boston Public from 2003 and the other has a Starz presentation of Ride with the Devil from 2001.

I guess you could say I'm currently in the middle of a VHS overload at the moment because I'm still going through some of the latest tapes my mom's friend sent me plus a lot more finds from two estate sales in Akron and Medina, respectively. I haven't found myself with as much time to go through many of them as of late, but I've previewed many of the latest estate sale tapes and have found quite a mixed bag of programming--ABC Sunday Night Movie presentation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind circa 1983, NCIS episodes, CSI episodes, Dateline, Late Show with David Letterman, what appears to be Raymond Burr's last Perry Mason movie on NBC (The Case of the Killer Kiss), Real TV marathon on TNN circa 2002, Superstation WGN rebroadcast of The World's Most Shocking Moments Caught on Tape 3 with Sheriff John Bunnell, some public access programming from Hudson Community TV on Time Warner Cable, America's Funniest Home Videos circa 2003, a couple of David Copperfield specials on CBS, 60 Minutes 35th anniversary special, History of Rock and Roll documentary on PBS circa 1995, Moody Blues concert on PBS, The Benny Hill Show on WUAB circa 1989, Hunter on WUAB circa 2003 (didn't know any stations were still airing that in syndication during that time), Fox News Channel coverage of the Space Shuttle Discovery launch in 2008, Touched by an Angel episodes, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies circa 2016, Through the Bible with Les Feldick, etc. Will elaborate on more specific details after I get through all of these, whenever that may be.

Good question about T and T I dated it 1987 based on car and movie commercials that were in the breaks its possible it was late 1987 as a preview. I've noticed that records for episodes for syndicated shows like that one are hard to come by sometimes.

Some sappy lady was recording sappy Hallmark Christmas movies on VHS in 2016? I'd put that straight up to the "M" site in a bulk lot and wouldn't even bother digitizing it. The Close Encounters taping is a good find if it has most or all of the commercials.

Here's an estate sale in Tallmadge I wish I could have stopped by today and won't be able to tomorrow because of work. I singled out this one picture in particular. The labels on these tapes are easier to read if you look at it on a phone screen rather than a computer screen (the ones written in thicker marker and larger print, at least). Quite a few short-lived programs on some of these (Max Headroom, Thea, Dark Angel). I'm wondering if either of those are even able to stream anywhere now. Bonus points if those ABC shows were taped from WAKC rather than WEWS since Tallmadge is a suburb of Akron. And it's a somewhat amusing irony seeing Red Shoe Diaries (tapes labeled "Red Shoes 1" and "Red Shoes 2") and gospel music awards shows in the same VHS collection.

The full series of Max Headroom is available on DVD, but I don’t know if the others you listed are, or if they’re streaming.

*CAN A DREAM COME TRUE?*

Breaking news: I just bought 13 L-750/830 Beta tapes from eBay. They are from GLENDIVE, MONTANA!!! I am praying for no disappointments in this lot. Could I finally, after 10+ years of digitizing and buying recorded VHS/Betas, find some classic, one-of-a-kind airchecks from KXGN?! I paid $36+ with shipping and they arrive next week. The seller said he found them locally in Dawson County too......

Stay tuned!
It is hard to overstate just how HUGE of a find that is.

I don't suppose you'd consider uploading any of it to YouTube?

I already have... a couple of KXGN break compilations already posted. More to come in November. Completely out of left field to see this Beta lot pop up in my eBay search. The hokey, low-quality ads are so fun to look at. Sidewalk sales at local businesses, insurance agents that have served the area for decades, herbicide for pastures, discounts on satellite TV systems (because this is middle-of-nowhere Montana after all)...
The caveat to super-rural finds is I could have just ended up with a bunch of '90s C-Band tapeovers from the Denver stations. But not this lot!

Previously, the smallest Nielsen market I had found on VHS was Helena (#205), the 12/11/03 Days of Our Lives via KTVH and Dr. Phil/Oprah from KXLH-LP (semi-satellite of Butte's KXLF).

One or two of Ed Agre's newscasts were on YouTube at one time, and then they disappeared. Not sure what was up with that.

Mr Agre and KXGN did the best they could with the resources they had, and it surely met a local need. Such localism was what the FCC envisioned when they made the original TV allocations in the 1950s. Sadly, everything has become homogenized today, and there exist very few redoubts of locally owned and operated programming anymore. WHKY's subchannel on WWJS in Hickory NC would be one example, thankfully the Long family was able to arrange a subchannel when they sold the station to the Swaggart organization. WYMT Hazard KY would be another, even though they are corporately-owned (Gray), they retain their localism, and have the resources of WKYT, WSAZ, and WVLT (which also serve Eastern Kentucky, there is much overlap) on which to draw on top of that. It works very well.

I've found three original broadcasts of Max Headroom, including the ABC premiere. Still, that is certainly something I would have purchased given the high amount of black-oriented material found on those labels. That tape with "Music" could have mid-'80s episodes of Soul Train or BET footage based on the tape stock. I also see "Cosby '87 V", so there's the chance for some more NBC sitcom gold there. Sadly for me, my last Beta lot that I searched last week was a 99.99% dud and ended up costing me shipping it back: 50 Beta tapes where after about 15 tapes, only a single commercial break (off of a Vegas station and one of the ads was for the Circus Circus casino which advertised $1.99 breakfast buffets, $2.99 lunch, and $3.99 dinner buffets), so it was like I was unfortunately dealt a 16 if this was Blackjack. I decided to "surrender" after seeing the labels had not much interesting, just movies taped off various stations/pay networks with a few PBS documentaries with almost no promos. Too bad as most of the recordings looked to be around 1982-84 based on the station ID's and tape stock. I had no clue what was on the labels, so as they say, you win some, but you lose some.

I've found material from markets as small as Harrisonburg, VA, Salisbury, MD, Hagerstown, MD, Plattsburgh, NY, and Greenville, NC on my side of the country.

I find it mind-boggling how many of these old VHS/Beta tapes of local TV content are out there. Back in the day, I taped individual shows, such as The X-Files, and seminal news events (elections, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and so on), but once I got a DVD recorder, I transferred them to DVD format and repurposed the tapes. But I didn't tape long runs of just whatever was on TV at any particular time. In retrospect, I wish I had.

Estate sale alert, Detroit area. Dig Detroit has been around for several years and specializes in cleaning out hoarder and "dirty dig" estates in the Detroit metro. Their next sale in Redford must have 200 or more tapes there, including TV tapings of ALF.
This sounds like a great opportunity for collectors, or even for Scott (albeit it's 2.5 hours away from Cleveland). I pray these tapes go to a collector and we get some classic Detroit TV on YouTube soon.

No Detroit content coming soon courtesy of me, but we are getting some Packers-land late '80s/early '90s TV down the road, thanks to my latest hunt this weekend courtesy of that M-initialed site. No Detroit content coming soon courtesy of me, but we are getting some Packers-land late '80s/early '90s TV down the road, thanks to my latest hunt this weekend courtesy of that M-initialed site. And quite a few 20/20's as well as a few 48 Hours. A few duds here and there including a couple tapes with retirement parties, a couple War and Remembrance miniseries tapes with no commercials and nothing else (besides a brief Geraldo clip on one tape), and another with the 1988 Newell CEO Award Presentation, but most keepers had the commercials intact. All tapes are in EP mode unless otherwise specified.

7/23/1986 was also the day yours truly came into this world and my mother was watching the wedding on TV!

Pannoni those are some great finds on 20/20! Practically any of those news magazine shows don't exist anymore outside of whatever people taped at home.
It's funny you said that because one of the estate sale tape hauls I've been slowly going through includes a ton of 20/20, 60 Minutes, Dateline NBC, 48 Hours, etc. Oldest I've found in this collection is a 20/20 from 1983 and the newest is a special two-hour edition of 48 Hours from 2007. Also quite a few "clip shows" in this mix (The Most Outrageous Live TV Moments, TV's Censored Bloopers with Dick Clark, Real TV with Ahmad Rashad, America's Funniest Home Videos with Tom Bergeron, The World's Most Shocking Moments Caught on Tape volumes 1-3 with Sheriff John Bunnell, etc.)

I have a couple of Dick Clark Bloopers specials (one ABC and one NBC) buried on tapes. I have found a couple of Saget-era AFVs and a few Bergeron, but no episodes from the Fuentes-Fugelsang era.

As time spent searching through my latest haul of tapes has become more sporadic on my end as of late and I still have more to look through, rather than keep everyone here in suspense, I'll start my backlog on this thread with the tapes I got from my mom's friend shortly before the two estate sales in Akron and Medina where I got about 30 more tapes total.
