Oldies 100.9 flips to Y-100!

Anyone notice what time Oldies flipped? And by flipped, I mean in name only, since otherwise it sounds the same.

I could have sworn that at 4pm I heard the Oldies jingles--but by 9pm it was Y-100...somewhere in between my drive home and a visit to the lake it switched...but when?

It has been Oldies 100.9 for a long time--at least 10 years...

I wonder if the Y-100 configuration was to avoid the demographic confusion?

Since "oldies listeners" come in all shapes, sizes and demographic age groups, the last thing any radio station wants is to be accused of is catering to a narrow target audience. :p

Y-100 is safer.

By the way...How is COAST 93.1 doing these days? :-X

Argy-

If you're looking for failure at Coast, I don't think you're going to find it.

Last I knew Coast 93.1 was selling out--even weekends. A far cry from the last days of 'MGX. Additionally, it filled a void that people wanted in Portland. There was absolutely no Hot AC station--so even if it doesn't top the book, Coast is filling a need. Now listeners have middle ground between 94.9 and 97.9--which seems like an easy sales pitch for the AE's...

I do agree with your take on the Oldies flip. It seems silly that PDs worry about something like this--but I've been on the wrong end of the telephone: PDs get tired of explaining why early Billy Joel is now considered an "Oldie". Better take a vague name that gives you lots of programming flexibility.

radiothis...

On the contrary...I'm hoping that many Northern New England radio stations remain successful?

My question about COAST 93.1 was in reference to the fact that I hadn't seen any promotion on them for awhile....and was asking the question strictly because I was curious? ???

Y-100 is a more contemporary 'handle'---and probably appeals to a younger demographic! ::)

I'm listening now (2am)--appears they hired another "Kelly" to take his place. Actually, I heard Tom was just trying to enjoy a little more of the vacationland lifestyle. I'm still hearing his voicework on plenty of spots.

Tom Kelly is right here... sort of. I'm known as Tom Pagnotti now and while I would like to say I'm kicked back and enjoying "the way life should be"... that couldn't be further from the truth. I decided sometime ago that I was going to build a studio in my home and concentrate on my voiceover business.

The time at Oldies100.9 was fun for me (as was the 14 years in DC) in part due to the awesomee people arround me... but it was time to do something a bit different. So, now I'm doing a fair amount of commercial work and radio and TV imaging. I specialize in V/O and imaging for small to medium market AC's and News-Talks.

Best Regards,

Tom

Just noticed my previous post rife with spelling errors… that’ll teach me to post without my reading glasses… ::)

IIRC, one reason for the change is that 'oldies' in a diary won't necessarily get credited to a station called "Oldies", since it's a format name, not a station name.
