Oldies 102.3 WCYN

As of 1 March 2012 the main studio of the station has been relocated to 117 N. Main Street, Suite 3, Cynthiana, Kentucky 41031. Ownership remains with Cumulus.

AM is now Country with the same locally produced daily live, local interest shows like Coffee Break, Trading Post, local news, sports, and the Sunday morning religious programs all still in place. FM is branded as Oldies 102.3 and is a music station.

I wonder if Cumulus is thinkin about actually doing something with 101.5 now that they've given control of WCYN-FM back to the owners of WCYN-AM. I personally would like to see Cumulus Lex try a 90's format on 101.5 and see how that does in Central Kentucky. Clear Channel has its Gen-X branded "90's" station in Louisville (100.5), but naturally they took something that was actually decent (couple years ago) and ruined it. Back when they first switched 100.5 to the Gen-X format, it was actually pretty good and worth listening to. Now they've just screwed it all up. Cumulus seems like they know what they are doing with the 90's-formatted station they have in Baton Rouge, LA, which is 103.3. It sounds pretty good, and I'd like to see something like that here, possibly on 101.5. Any thoughts?

I love 100.5 WLGX in Louisville... I wouldn't mind if they did that but I don't see them changing 101.5. I wish they would flip 94.5 to Gen-X. Not sure what 94.5 format is anymore. It will go from Nickelback to Diana Ross to Red Hot Chili Peppers :)

You're probably right. It would probably cost them too much money to do much of anything else with 101.5. It's sad...we could actually have something good on there but right now it's a waste of a completely good frequency. I know what you mean about 94.5 though. I think they should let 92.1 and 105.5 focus on the 70s and 80s and they can shift their format to a 90's format.

Not sure, but for a long time they were simulcasting WVLK-590 on WCYN-102.3 as WVLK has lots of nighttime nulls in that area. That's also why, I believe, they use 101.5 to carry the 590 signal into nulled areas at night. I live in SW Lexington near Clays Mill and Man-O-War and I can tell you that 590 nighttime reception is pretty awful from here to beyond Dunbar High School along Man-O-War Blvd.

Didn't they simulcast 92.9 at some point too which was a bad idea... 92.9 is a powerful signal. I've picked it up in Cincy before.

They did simulcast 92.9 briefly. I thought the orignal plan was to take 102.3 dark in order to improve 102.5s signal.

When the Cloud bought it, they did degrade 102.3 in the direction of Lexington. I believe they moved the transmitter a few miles north of where it was and possibly even lowered the ERP and possibly went directional????? This was clearly done to give their 102.5 a wider berth in the Lexington area.

The directional part is correct.

If they took it dark, I do not think they could gain that much much with WEBN being a full class B

to the north without a different tower location.

I've always believed it would benefit them the most by simulcasting 102.5 on 102.3. Seems to make the most sense, especially if they want to (try to) compete with 104.5 as far as coverage goes.

Tower Site is the same since it was built in the early 90's. Original antenna was an ERI 3 bay pole mounted omni, operating at 1.9 KW ERP because of the tower height, which was, and still is 423 feet AGL. The antenna install was re-engineered when Cumulus bought it from the original family owners, which then allowed 102.5 to upgrade and move their transmit location to it's current spot, closer to Lexington, from a tower down on the river in Jessamine County. The directional antenna also provided enough of a null in the direction of 102.1 in Lawrenceburg to allow WCYN-FM to increase it's power in the main lobe over adjoining counties that do not have local stations, with a fair percentage of listeners that commute into or through Harrison County to work. Now that it's being programmed from Cynthiana, the eventual end scenario turned out to be a win/win for everybody!
