Oldies 103.3 vs. B101

I would like to know which station you prefer to listen to. I started listening to Oldies 103 in 87 when they first came on, and been a loyal listener since, and I am 30. I was at first disappointed in when they dropped the 50's music, but I soon adjusted to the addition of more 70's music, and in the last few years, even more 70's and some 80's. I prefer Oldies 103 because they still play a lot of 60's songs that B101 does not, and they play more 70's soul and disco music, and also the 80's music they are adding is dance and R&B music, which I really like. B101 over the last few years has gone in the direction of classic hits and classic rock, playing mostly rock hits of the 70's and 80's. Although I do like some classic hits and classic rock, I like dance, disco, soul, and r&b music better. Maybe B101 is playing more classic rock because Providence has no classic rock station. I do really like the new sound of Oldies 103. It has a nice balance of rock, disco, dance, soul, and R&B, plus more variety than B101. It would seem that B101 is no longer competing with Oldies 103, but is now competing with 105.7 WROR, but I am curious which station people on this board like better, Oldies 103 or B101, because I know that Oldies 103 has many listeners in RI, since its signal covers much of the state.

In terms of the music I'm more into classic hits or classic rock so I like B101's music better but I don't think they're a better station. Oldies 103 has the personalities and the station presents it all better aside from the music. B101 has a morning show and blah imaging.

I prefer Oldies 103.3. But WELH 88.1 usually plays 50's up to 1979. Even though oldies are only played from noon to 7pm. Its a good mix. True Oldies 790 AM ain't bad either.

B101 and Oldies 103 are not even close to format anymore.B101 is more like 100 The Pike.
Oldies 103 does mix it up a lot better. As for B101. I hate to say it but dump all the Voice tracked jocks and get better imaging.
Listening to Ed McMann in afternoon drive makes me want to throw up.No interaction with traffic.A great voice but boring as hell.
B101 is on life support.
As for True oldies 790.Better imaging. Not Crazy about Bruce Viocetracking but they do try to keep each daypart fresh.

I would have to agree there. At this point, the only thing preventing True Oldies from fighting it out with B101 is the fact its stuck on 790 AM.

Personally, I like listening to the oldies on AM. Gives me that nostalgic feeling of how the song sounded when it was first played on the radio ;)

This should be WPRV vs Oldies103. B101 is getting harder. It won't be long before it's B101 vs HJY. Once people get fed up with the newer rock HJY is playing which frankly is nothing but 75% stiff music that fits their image but has no other reason for being played. Then when that happens CC will use it as an excuse to cannibalize HJY. Just like B101 and Coast are basically morning show stations that stay on the air after 10AM anyway, HJY will be Paul and Al but the station will stay on the air after 10AM anyway.

Providence has historically been a more rock town than soul & R&B town, the research and testing has proven it out over the last 20 years I have been in and around music stations. Take a listen to all of the stations (Pro, Lite, B101, HJY, Coast) in the older stuff that they play, why is it that they are playing rock music.....it is because it severly thumps most of the R&B that gets tested (at B, Lite Coast and Pro). There are those R&B songs that will forever test well in Providence (Shannon-Let The Music Play comes to mind); but just as Providence has always been a Rock town, Boston has always been a R&B/Soul town and you can hear that with the stuff Mix, Oldies, Kiss, Jamn, etc are playing as their older stuff.

Forgot who was on middays
Bruce in the Afternoon

Surely, you jest...

It's True Oldies "PD" Scott Shannon doing middays.

I always thought Boston was a rock town but anyway if Providence is a rock town that's going to change in the future. I doubt younger demos and even those who aren't the desired demo yet are into rock. But then I doubt anyone in Providence radio is seriously looking at this market for the long haul anyway. The ones who've been around radio a while are just waiting it out. If they were smart enough to use that 401K they can exit gracefully and not care what the market is doing. Anybody over 45-50 that paranoid about their jobs due to changes in music and format tastes would have been smart enough to get out of the market already. Those who have to struggle and stay in radio for the next 20 years probably think like I once did: regardless of how lousy the future looks, it will change. Providence might have been a rock town during HJY's heydey but even though they still do well, their heydey is gone and the only allure when it comes to working there is the money the institution type people are making. I wonder if one reason stations like B101 and Coast rely so heavily on voicetracking in and out of town is that those in the age groups of the people who would take jobs there and should be hired just won't move to Providence to do radio. Providence is becoming a salsa town.

Yeah, because all of the recurrent and gold songs on Coast, Pro & HJY are salsa songs. That is why Journey, Bryan Adams, U2, Matchbox 20, Bon Jovi etc are played way more than New Edition, Bobby Brown, Expose, Lisa Lisa, etc

That was a general statement about the changing population in the market, not Providence radio recurrents.

Right and my point is that the music tests are still overwhelmingly showing positive results for rock because if you listen, that is what you hear
