Oldies 103 Concert on the Esplanade - Steppenwolf & Rick Derringer

Why doesn't "Oldies" put an Oldies show on instead of a Classic Rock show???

Rick Derringer was better than he was 2 years ago in Manchester New Hampshire at THE PALACE - but it was hardly an Oldies 103.3 show - more like a WZLX program. What gives?

Rick didn't even play "Fever" (which he played in Manchester). For an oldies crowd he could've played "Beat It"
by Michael Jackson since he produced and played on "Eat It" by Weird Al, which was a mega hit. Another rock critic in the audience (not Brett Milano, who was there too, or a fellow with a WMBR t shirt on that we all know) thought they should've played some Chuck Berry since the bassist was Chuck's bassist. Instead there was some blues, and some jazz, and some pro-Iraq war stuff (???) - but no "Fever", just "Hang On Sloopy" and
"Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo". With all the yapping Derringer (nee Rick Zehringer, isn't it?) could've mentioned that the music or program director of WRKO back in the day - Carol what's-her-name- is the reason Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo is a hit. Didn't WRKO edit the song from the album and start playing it, forcing the label (Blue Sky/EPIC)to issue a single? I believe that's accurate. March 1974. Also, Mr. Zehringer could've played "Frankenstein" or "Jumpin Jack Flash" (Johnny Winter And...) or "Free Ride" (his former bassist friend, the late Dan Hartman for The Edgar Winter Group). He was affiliated with a lot of hits and could've made a good "Ray Davies" storyteller set for the audience.

Steppenwolf - pretty good. They too got into the blues stuff, but Sookie Sookie, Rock Me Baby, Magic Carpet Ride & Born To Be Wild sounded good; the encore of THE PUSHER was the best performance of the night and they should've played the entire set like that. It was actually brilliant. But, again, for an Oldies 103.3 crowd?

BeatleJuice (www.muzzdrums.com/beatlejuice) was supposed to be the opening act but the promoter screwed them out of the gig.

I would have gone just to see Brad Delp, Muzzy (the drummer from Farrenheit), and the rest of the guys play a set that would have made Steppenwolf look like crap. Maybe the promoter was afraid the opening act would be better than the headliner.

Best show in Boston last night... Susan Tedeschi at the Pavillion.

There was BLUE CHEER at the Middle East last night too. "Beatlejuice" performed last year at the Oldies show; Brad Delp is fantastic doing all the Beatles voices. Too bad Jackie DeShannon doesn't want to do the Oldies Free Concerts - but there are a lot of acts they could've brought in for this show rather than having a classic rock
night. I didn't mind it, it just didn't fit the WODS format. A 20 minute version of "Fever" by Derringer would've been preferable to their blues based stuff.

Susan is great, but I would've liked to have gone there to see R&B legend Etta James perform.

However, I saw her a number of times in the 80's and 90's, and I've seen Susan a bunch of times as well. I've never seen Steppenwolf and the free concert was easier on the wallet, so I opted for the Esplanade.

from todays Boston Herald..

James shines but Tedeschi steals show

Headlining acts need to be careful who they choose to open their shows. Etta James may indeed be a legend, but she was overwhelmingly upstaged by Boston’s own Susan Tedeschi on Saturday night at the Bank of America Pavilion. It wasn’t that James was a disappointment. Tedeschi was just that good.
Touring in support of her newest CD, “Hope & Desire,” Tedeschi and her ridiculously tight and spirited four-piece band concentrated less on her early blues material, honing in on her new r & b and soul direction. Stevie Wonder’s “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” and Otis Redding’s “Security” began the night, foreshadowing the set’s heavy soul leanings.

Despite the onslaught of hard-driving soul, the evening’s finest and most powerful moment came on a heartbreaking interpretation of Dylan’s sweet gospel ballad “Lord Protect My Child,” the mother of two delivering the tune with a stunning mix of conviction and elegance.
The Berklee grad’s blues roots reared their head at the end of the set, beginning with the roadhouse boogie of “Rock Me Right” and ending with Tedeschi leaving her lungs onstage for “It Hurt So Bad.”
James may be almost twice as old as Tedeschi, but you won’t be seeing her knitting sweaters or lining up for Bingo night any time soon. After three rather uninspiring bluesy instrumentals from her backing band, James sauntered onto the stage and immediately began raunchily thrusting her pelvis to the beat. Right from the opening saucy blues of “Rock Me Baby,” James seemed adamant on convincing the crowd of her still-vibrant sexuality. It’s not often that singers approaching 70 repeatedly grab themselves onstage, but James has never gone the squeaky-clean Doris Day route.
About halfway through the set, James let go of the Madonna impersonation and thankfully concentrated on singing. The uptempo r & b of “Tell Me” brought the crowd to its feet, as did a fine version of her standard “At Last,” which showcased James’ agile phrasing and husky tone..

Does Oldies 103.3 even play "Fever," or "Rock & Roll Hoochie Coo (sp?)," for that matter? I thought most tight-playlist oldies stations limit their Derringer content to "Hang On Sloopy," the short radio edit, and classic hits stations play only "Hoochie Coo."

Beatlejuice kicks ass.

I would like to see them do a show with a guest guitarist and guest drummer. Any idea who that could be? PM and RS,perhaps? :)

When I saw them at the Mike show last fall I wanted to yell out "Do a Boston tune" :)

have you picked up the newly remastered (and done right this time) Boston discs?

The Boston Discs

Neggy,

I came home to find them both on the doorstep (Sony/BMG doesn't mail to P.O. Boxes I guess...). They are both amazing. I never thought I could listen to that music again - but the re-mastering is wonderful and the booklets with information from Tom himself, a treat for fans and rock historians.

A++ truly excellent BUT no bonus tracks. The "demos" from the bootleg "We Found Them In A Trashcan, Honest" (the Scholz tapes before they allegedly had to go to the "major" studio to add things) would've been a nice addition. Oh well...

I bought the first disc, the second one is on the buy list for next trip to Newbury Comics.

I agree on the liner notes.

While we are taking this thread way of topic, did anyone get the newest Billy Joel live disc? Should I save the cash and just listen to the ones I already have?

Blue Cheer played Western Mass. last night a few days after The Middle East.
Friends said they were great. Summertime Blues.
