Oldies 104.3 safe from hiJACKing?

I believe I mentioned this somewhere else, but do you think Detroit's Oldies WOMC is safe from hiJACKing? By what I see they do well in the Arbs.

ABC already owns a Jack type station in Detroit, so I doubt Infinity would go Jack in the motor city. I would like to think that WOMC is safe from any format change. Unlike CBS-FM or certainly WJMK, WOMC has excellent ratings. They are the #1 rated FM in Detroit. They have a high profile and very well liked morning show. It would be foolish for Infinity to mess with this station, but stranger things have happened.

If KRTH Los Angeles and WOGL Philadelphia Flip WOMC will be gone to. watch if those 2 or any other infinity FM's FLip like WGRR down in Cincy

But, much like John Lanigan at CC-owned WMJI in Cleveland, WOMC's morning man Dick Purtan is quickly reaching his elder years. He's already been inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame this past spring (same class as Lujack). He's sure to be mulliung retirement in some portion of his brain--and may be waiting for the correct moment to do so. Purtan's been Detroit's morning guy for, jeez, almost 30 years (going back to WXYZ and CKLW in the 70s). When Purtan (and Lanigan at WMJI) decide to retire, WOMC and WMJI will change format. No one is groomed to replace them with the same audience pull.

And those things may happen sooner rather than later. It sucks, but these guys have had a good life, excellent careers, and probably would like to stay up and watch the late movie for once! Good luck to them, and god save those formats.

Infinity's classic rock station in L. A. -The Arrow recently switched to Jack.
That might give you the impression that K-Earth might be safe, but ...The last time I heard KRTH they were very sterile sounding. They sounded like they were voiced tracked. The jocks just talked over the 5 & 6 second intros. They used recorded promos going into stopsets. That is a real waste of some high priced talent. Their playlist was very small. Sounds like they are trying to kill the oldies format in L. A. There is another oldies station, KOLA, that does cover much of the L. A. market into Orange County.
Personally I wouldn't listen to a Jack format. I can do the same thing with my CD palyers or an I-pod. And I don't have to listen to commercials. I want to be entertained!
>

K-Earth has had a small playlist since the Mike Phillips early-90s days, hovering around 350 tightly researched songs. And Bill Drake consulted then.

The big change has been the lack of recognizable and live talent on KRTH. Canned intros-outros are bad business, especially for a personality-driven format like oldies. THAT is KRTH's biggest problem: phoning it in.

Yeah, And then they'll kill off the oldies format blaming it on lack of interest of the listeners. Anything but what the real problem is .. very bad programing choices and making the station boring.

I doubt they're going to pull Dick Purtan off the air, so WOMC is safe.

Oldies 104.3

goodness- as wacky as CBS-FM was, nuking WOMC and Purtan would be a total
tragedy. They still smoke in the ratings and Purtan is king in the Motor City.

No way/no how.

Re: Oldies 104.3

I believe no one is safe. Purtan's success has to be balanced against the outrageous salary he is no doubt pulling down. JACK allows corporate radio to eliminate an enormous amount of payroll, with the bet that the 25-54 audience doesn't care about personality or promotion any more. And the suits could care less about anybody 55+, as has been stated and proven over and over.

Jack jocks(less)

The jockless aspect of Jack is a by-product of this approach, not a reason to do it. Get real.

I agree, it's just a by-product. Infinity and the other companies aren't doing this format to save money. They are flipping stations to Variety Hits because they think it will get good ratings in the money demos and bill well. When it comes down to it, the gap between high and low billing stations is significantly higher (Millions of dollars per year in large and even medium markets) than the cost of an airstaff.

Going jockless is often the best way to launch a format. It showcases the music and keeps the station clutter free. Eventually being jockless could hurt Jack stations, it wouldn't shock me if some add jocks in the future. I also don't see Jack as the end of the air personality in general, some stations will always have the human element.

What's it billing? That's the only thing that matters. Many of the blown up oldies stations were still top 5 in the ratings (even 25-54), but like WCBS, 11th or worse in revenue.

If WOMC has a sales staff that sells the great audience they have, they'll survive. If they have a sales staff that whines that their audience isn't what their friends at the agencies want, then it'll get blown up too.

QED.

Re: Jack jocks(less)

I am being real. The Holy Grail of radio managers is a successful music format that doesn't need any jocks, or even a full-time PD. If JACK succeeds, they've found it. If the music-only approach fails, what's the difference between Jack and a "full-service" variety AC? Nothing that the average listener would notice.

The jock-free "attitude" is an integral part of Jack, not just a by-product, at least right now. It may or may not last, but if jocks start to return to these stations, it will mean they've changed direction from the original concept.

Re: Jack jocks(less)

I hope you're right, and jocks probably will come back, for a variety of reasons. But I bet it takes a long time; more than a year will pass. It's too bad all stations can no longer have the human element.

I hope I'm right too. Jocks aren't really that expensive if they help a station win. In the medium market I live in, the difference in revenue between high and low billing stations is probably greater than the salaries of all the air talent at every radio station in town combined.

Jax jox

And I STRONGLY believe Jack-type stations will need personalities to distinguish themselves from satellite or iPods. Only the most jaded would believe no jocks
would be a big reason to do this format en masse.

There already is a variety hits station in Philly, "Ben." Like K-Earth in LA, 'OGL's not going to flip to Jack when there already is a Jack in the market.

jocks

Please remember that through the years (far back as the seventies), there were a number of various "background" formats that never utilized personalities.
We're just in the age of consolidation and voicetracking and I think many jocks are understandably anxious.

I do believe, however, that the really good-to-great talent will ALWAYS be needed. It's the lower-end jocks who should worry- and by that I mean those with little good experience, those who aren't blessed with a ton of talent (and are not getting good coaching) and those who have lousy attitudes (or work ethics) and probably SHOULD be pushed out the door. But thee is always room, need and demand for top talent.
