Oldies 106.1 outta here Jan 1

According to Mark Washburn Oldies 106.1 will flip to Spanish on Jan 1. Norsan will lease it with an option to buy the station.

There was no word on what would become of morning man Ken Conrad. Hopefully they will keep him around to run the remaining GHB stations WEGO-AM Concord and WAVO-AM Rock Hill.

Seems like the rumors were circulating about them going Spanish before they switched to Oldies. I guess Tom Gentry convinced Mr. Buck to let them try one more time, and failed.

This has to break Tom's heart. He's poured heart and soul into 106.1 for over 14 years. To read Gentry talking about this as an "economic" decision betrays his disappointment at the loss . . . something I empathize with.

It also explains why they're moving WEGO's studio to Charlotte, but from what I've read, Bob Brown will continue to do his morning show. That could mean that Ken Conrad is ready for "retirement".

From the Hispanic side of things, this move means that Norbert Sanchez has finally realized the futility of trying to get a better signal into Charlotte from Pageland's 102.3. He's done about all he can with that one, and now it's better for him to spend his $$$ elsewhere.

Personally, I will miss the station. I enjoyed it best as WNMX with the Stardust format, but you could never duplicate that sound without Eddie Hubbard (god rest his soul) and Joe Lacina . . . and they're not coming back.

Later . . .

Just curious...what else could WOLS try (to avoid going Spanish)? Should they have stuck with Timeless Favorites instead of going oldies? The Timeless Favorites (I guess it could be defined as gold-based Soft AC) is something WLYT is no longer doing -- WLYT sounds more Hot AC everytime I tune in. I just really hate hearing more and more Spanish on FM signals. (would you please pass the nachos?)

I'm very thankful that I have satellite radio. The lack of good AM and FM stations in a market this size is deplorable.

I have seen other stations drop their standards format for oldies and they too were rewarded with lower ratings. I have a feeling standards attracts more than just old people!

Lets see what kind of numbers they can get. So far I haven't seen any Spanish stations with decent numbers. I keep thinking I must be missing something.....

That's too bad. Ken, try and keep a good thought. It ain't easy these days, but try.

I wonder if another FM in the Charlotte market will try their hands at oldies, maybe
K-104.7?(since CBS owns them)

WKQC should REALLY go to the "Greatest Hits" format used at sister stations WCBS/New York, WRBQ/Tampa, WOCL/Orlando, etc with 60s/70s/80s. Do the all-Christmas then start with something fresh. "Kool 104.7 WKQC" or something like that would sound nice.

I don't see "K" skewing the music older. Maybe if Oldies 106.1 had made some strides in the ratings...but the focus at "K" has been on catering to a younger audience with younger music.

Someone asked what could Oldies 106.1 have done. It might have worked better with some good promotion. The simple "Take Your Radio To Work" contest that we did at 102.9 worked very well for the station helping make it a winner. Music taylored to the Charlotte area would probably also have helped.

Another Spanish station?

Charlotte already has 102.3 & 105.3.

It's the growth & rising economic power of the regions' Hispanics.

WOLS recently upgraded it's tower.

It's all about $.

IMHO, I'll have to listen to 1150WAVO, a 5kw daytimer, instead of the format on an FM signal.

Magic94.1 must be happy!

Is 94.1 still wanting to add a tower closer to charlotte?

Also, what will happen to W-AVO when 106.1 goes spanish?
W-AVO's signal is very week if you live east of charlotte.

According to the Concord paper, WEGO at 1410 will soon join the Standards format. As they and WAVO are commonly owned, they'll likely be simulcast with WAVO. That would provide coverage to North Charlotte and Concord-Kannapolis with the standards format.

The WOLS LMA is almost certainly financially driven. Radio is, after all is said and done, still a business.

I'll miss Ken Conrad in the mornings. I always thought 106.1 would stay with their format for a long time since they were small. It's just one more station disappearing from charlotte's history. ???

Since CC killed off WFMX, I've long thought that 94.1 could move to the Cool Springs site -- would this get them closer to Charlotte? IF 94.1 did this, would they need to downgrade? I am thinking not, since this would put them farther away from 93.9 in Raleigh -- though they might be marginally closer to 94.1 Oak Hill, WV. I say this, and yet I'm assuming the old WFMX is still up in Cool Springs -- I haven't been by there in a while.

I had wondered this very question about 94.1 moving to the old Cool Springs site a year or so ago when WFMX left. Yes, the 1500 ft tower is still there in Cool Springs as you can see it from I-40. It appears that it would only be a 20 mile move west from their north Davidson transmitter if they did move. One would think they could move their transmitter 20 miles west without having to drastically reduce their signal down into the 40KW range. From Cool Springs it would put out a great signal in the Triad (depending on how much they would still need to shield 93.9 in Cary) and greatly improve the signal in Charlotte as well. I would love to see that move to Cool Springs as it would give it the signal to make the Oldies format work since it would almost be city grade in both metro areas I really think to be very successful with the Oldies format as the population age changes, the station would need the large exposure of both markets. Just my 2 cents worth...

Since I live in north Meck county, I usually have issues receiving 106.1 until driving to Charlotte but I really do love listening to Ken C. in the mornings. I hope he can find another morning shift locally as he is one of the best in Charlotte mornings. I really like his calming and steady effect on the radio.

Re moving 94.1 to Cool Springs: An interesting idea, but one BIG problem would be WMEV in Marion VA on 93.9. This is a full C from a mountaintop transmitter. Perhaps Magic could solve this by making their signal directional to the north (WPEG/97.9 and WBRF/98.1 do this). I don't think Cary or Oak Hill would be a problem, but the 94.1 in the Greenwood SC area might be a sticking point. On the idea of making 94.1 serve both Charlotte and the Triad--I don't know, history has shown that those two market stations don't fare so well. On the other hand WEND does fairly well in the Triad though it's a Charlotte station, but I don't know if they get any ad money from the Triad at all.

I wonder if WHVN is making money for GHB? They have a nice 1KW signal in Charlotte. It would be great to hear the standards format there.

Most people I know who listen to Christian radio listen to either WRCM or WMIT.

When will 105.3 ever move to the Charlotte area? I live below Greenville, SC and it still booms here. I'm assuming they haven't moved yet. What is the holdup?

The songs on Urban (rap) stations usually sound the same.

Same on Hispanic stations - lots of tubas & trumpets!

Hopefully, this Pop-Tropical format will be aimed at a younger demo, & a broader slice of the Hispanic mkt., like Dominicans, Puerto Ricans & other Caribbean natives.

Pop-tropical also tends to attract non-Hispanic listeners, & announcers will likely speak both English & Spanish on the air.

I liked the Spanish stations in Miami. Most of them played a more modern form of music called I believe Salsa. It might be the difference between the music of Mexico and the the music of Cuba.
