OLDIES 106 ALREADY SOUNDING BETTER

They are already sounding better to me. I've been listening for about 45 minutes and think I've only heard one song from the 60's. Most seem to be from the 70's. I haven't heard a commercial yet either.

Just when I was thinking they needed some local artists, they threw in Atlanta Rhythm Section, so
maybe they've remembered to add them also. The station is sounding much like the old WFOX 97
(on a good day).

Spoke too soon......commercial break now. I can only add that they seem to be a bit lite on 70's
R&B crossover which was really big from 1973 to 1979.......with many reaching the Top-10.

Hey, that commercial break was less than 2 minutes!!!! WAY TO GO 106!!!!

Don't celebrate those short commercial breaks. If they aren't playing at least 10 minutes an hour, they ain't gonna be around in a year.

They dropped Scott Shannon totally. They had planned to do that as soon as next week. But one day last week, Shannon announced on the air that he had "terrible news" and went on to talk about the change. The Citadel switchboard exploded, and the station made a decision to drop Shannon immediately.

I'm extremely disappointed in it... I loved True Oldies because of their music selection and Scott. You would hear songs that didn't get usual airplay, and that's one thing I really enjoyed. I still listen, but not as much as I did. So, with True Oldies gone, I've lost 2.5 stations so far this year that I listen too (True Oldies, Groove, and B98.5*.) The only station that I have left on my dail that I'm actually listening to is Q100.

*Reason I lost B98.5: Christmas music, will rejoin them when the holidays are over, Christmas music depresses me. So, that's the (point)5*

Listened in the car awhile more, and they did throw in some R&B oldies. It seems they are doing a song or two in the middle of those commercial breaks.................which does help to break them up a little.

Don't forget their ratings were going down, they had to do something. Skewing the station a few years newer/younger was the right idea. Let's just hope they do it again in about 3 years and eventually move on into the 80's.

If this move works (which is most likely) maybe the True Oldies network will give it a try also.

You seem to be forgetting that Mark Richards is the one that took Fox 97 down the toilet. You think he'll do any better with 106? He'll screw it up, mark (no pun intended) my words.

If you start getting Beatles/Beach Boys/Motown in heavy rotation, that's your sign the station is in trouble.

If there is a time for someone to steal the 80s "oldies" listeners, now is the time to do it while B98.5 is distracted with Christmas.

You don't know what you're talking about. The only one who took Fox 97 "down the toilet" was Bob Neil. And he did it by ignoring Mark Richards' advice.

Just what I thought. You come on here and make an absolutely ignorant comment about one of the most respected programmers in the business. Then, when someone calls you on it, the best you can do is "Uh huh, yeah." Nice.

106.7 IS UP TO SOMETHING........

They are playing a ton of mellow soft-rock (aimed at B-98 listeners)
AND
They are playing a ton of R&B oldies (aimed at Kiss 104 and Magic listeners).
When you think of it Kiss & Magic only play a few 70's tracks, as they seem to have
moved on to the 80's and 90's+. This is a smart move. 106 has found an area of music
that is under-covered and plans to run with it.

R&B seemed to be about 50% today and mellow about 30%. They are playing some rock, but
may feel that area is already in the hands of Rock 100 and The River.

Embracing R&B does set them apart from both Rock 100 and The River. I don't even think
Fox 97 played as much R&B.

I want to ask a question. Who at Cox has made this “rule” that all Cox music stations have a less than 200 songs in their playlist? (Bob Neil?) Does this person: have stock in or is being paid by Satellite radio? There will be someone quick to respond with the “tight playlists make better ratings according to our research” posting soon. It did not work at Fox 97. These are usually the same posters who say the “oldies” demos are too old to be successful.

IMHO the +50 demo is similar to the urban demo in the 60’s and early 1970’s. If any of the original V103 sales people are around they will tell you that it was not rating numbers that was the big obstacle to closing the sale. It took many years to turn V103 into the cash machine it is now. If you get results with local buyers, you are not as dependant on the ratings. The Fish’s sales team does a good job with a “difficult” demo. It takes time, and most corporations operate on a “this quarter now mentally”. Even CC waited on “Bull” more than a couple of quarters. I no not know if Citadel can limit the number of commercials on 106.7 like Cox has on 97.1. It is frustrating to listen to 106.7 and hear so many commercials while the River is playing music.

Well, the wife put 106.7 on the radio again, so I've been listening to it. I have to say it sounds a lot better. I don't much care about the release dates of songs, but I do care about the sound. So far in the four hours I've been listening they've played almost nothing but rock. It seems most or all of the songs were from the mid-60's or later. I haven't noticed the disc jockey, except that it was a female voice. Whoever it was, she was far enough in the background that she didn't detract from what really matters, the music.

The only thing that would turn me against the new playlist would be if tomorrow they played the same songs as they played today.

Ooops!

It turns out that the wife only said she had "the oldies station" on. Turns out she had changed it to 100.5 instead of 106.7. So, it's 100.5 that sounds pretty good, not 106.7.

Sorry for the error.

Shannon got Fred canned and now Shannon is gone from 106.7. Of course Shannon still has a paycheck. Someone at Citadel needlessly fired a good guy.

Is Shannon gone from Citadel or just from 106.7? I thought that 106.7 just dumped the Citadel True Oldies network feed and went local. Is there more to this story than that?

From the looks of it, it appears that Shannon is off completely of 106.7, and it might not be due to the Citadel issue. If indeed it was a Citadel decision, chances are that most of the True Oldies networks and stations would have a cascading effect of canceling the program, and major radio news channels would be reporting about the ousting of Shannon, which was not the case. So far right now, WLS FM in Chicago which is owned by Citadel is still playing the True Oldies network which would support the argument that 106.7 dumped Shannon because of its desire to go local to bring in live personalties and target a more younger audience.

As far as the music goes, the playlist looks like a hybrid between the former True Oldies playlist and what Peach 94.9 would have played without the currents. They also played the Michael Jackson's song "Beat It" as well as a few songs from Prince including "1999" today according to yes.com which isn't too surprising if they consider early 80's Hall & Oates as oldies.

Overall, the music playlist is more listenable, and the old school R&B from the 70's are filling in nicely.
