OLDIES 106 GUNNIN' FOR THE NEW RIVER

True Olides 106 which has been dropping in ratings for several months is now airing a promo where they take a jab at the River (which has been holding steady, and overtaken 106).

In the promo they say something like "WE DON'T PLAY THE SAME NEW 300 OLDIES OVER AND OVER. WE HAVE THE LARGEST OLDIES PLAYLIST IN TOWN."

Well, is the shorter playlist working for the River OR is the longer playlist working against Oldies 106?

Maybe they both should aim for the middle, with about 650. I think a longer playlist would work better for the NEW River and a shorter one for True Oldies which currently attempts to be all things to all people.

1. How many people who stopped listening to Oldies 106 and switched to The River actually heard that promo that was played on Oldies 106? How effective is a message aimed at former listeners if the former listeners don't hear it?

2. Did anyone ever stop to think that the quality of the songs are at least as important as the quantity? I doubt if someone who prefers late 60's and 70's rock and roll over doo-wop would listen to a station that played a lot of doo wop and not much rock and roll.

My wife put Oldies 106 on the home stereo again today, so I was stuck listening to it. I don't care if they have a playlist of 1,000 crappy old songs that I didn't like when they were new or a tight playlist of only 300 crappy old songs that I didn't like when they were new. I'm not going to voluntarily listen to them. I think that most listeners share my opinion about not wanting to hear songs they don't like. They may disagree with me over what songs are crap and what songs are gold, but I think the desire of each listener to tune in a station playing songs they like instead of songs they don't like is universal.

I think a lot of listeners still listen to both. I know when either plays a song I don't like, I switch.

106 also seems to be playing more commercials now than when they first started. You can switch, listen to another song, come back, and the commercials are often still going.

No way dude! The New 97.1 The River plays tons of tunes; no commercials! They start every workday with their exclusive 97-Minute Commercial-Free Ride. What's really great is sometimes, the afternoon commute is the only time you really get to yourself! Enjoy the trip with Kate McCarthy and their unique 52-minute commercial-free music hours. The River is new, exclusive, and unique!

Whoa, looks like B98.5 has lost a dedicated listener... ::)
It's easy to get B97.1 and the New 98.5 The River confused...

FWIW, here are my presets:

River
B98.5
Rock 100.5
Kicks
WNGC (picked them over Bull for Moby; I listen to MITM when I need something safe for my daughter, as opposed to TRG)
True Oldies

Point being: There is probably a decent amount of overlap between True Oldies and River. I would bet the average listener age for True Oldies is the oldest for a pop/rock station, and River is second.

Since not much is doing on country these days, I may see what's going on with Q100 and replace Kicks with them.

I do agree that True Oldies' spot load is a lot higher now.

And I disagree with the comment about the doo-wop. True Oldies hasn't been heavy in pre-British Invasion stuff for a long while--maybe not ever since they have been OTA in ATL.

BTW: I'm glad the board admins fixed the issue where "doo-wop" was considered a bad word and wouldn't let you post a message containing it.

When I become PD of 92.9, your list will change right?

Has your daughter moved away from Radio Disney? One would think she would be scanning every station and tell you if they are out of phase or if they are DX'ing.

Re: 92.9, of course!

You don't need my daughter to tell you that in ATL Radio Disney is only available on AM. ;)

AM Presets:
WDWD
WGST
WSB (may get dumped for WDUN because I have 95.5 on FM-2 presets)
WGKA
WNIV
WLTA

I agree. I have worked with several satellite stations and usually there are 4 to 6 “fill” songs either 3 or 3.5 minutes per hour. I have not seen the True Oldies “clock” of satellite avails but if you are ever in Blue Ridge Ga., WLSB (1400) is on the bird (plus they do not have the HD delay) and they play a lot more songs (except during the hours that have obituary notices and The Swap Shop).* The 106.7 “live” shifts are ok but 3 to 5 three or three and a half commercial breaks an hour is a bit much in the #7 market. Also too much for a music station whose “main” competitor is running only eight.

*The Swap Shop is an hour of phone call-ins from the WYHG Young Harris studios.
