Oldies 1160.. How was their concert

I'm sorry i dont live in cincy anymore.. But was the 1160 concert a success???
Please give me any feedbacks that you may have...
 
I heard about it too...Will they air it?

I was there & it was a well polished performance attended by 1600 people. Rodger Kay was very pleased with the way it went. The music was great, but the icing on the cake was that every time there was a mention of WDJO, the audience applauded...these people are passionate about their radio station! WDJO is a class act...Congrats on taking a station with zero listeners & 1 year later, convincing 1600 people to shell out some good money for a show. AM is dead? Not from what I witnessed...
 
WDJO is putting the "NICHE" back into AM music radio.. Way to go!! They sound like they are having fun, too!
 
Anybody know what the capacity of the theater is? What percentage of capacity was the attendance?

BIG sounding Radio, in an itty bitty box. You go, 'DJO!
 
For those of us who don't know... who were the performers? Was it a charity gig? What was the ticket price? What was the competition for live entertainment that night? Is the venue known for "adult" shows?
 
Highly respected venue. The Taft Theater on 5th St downtown. I doubt there's ever been adult entertainment there, but having left Cincy 30 years ago, I can't swear to that. Acts...Kathy Young of the Innocents, Shades of Blue, Skyliners, Mel Carter, Contours & several others. They all had recognizable hits, but most were 1 hit wonders. The venue was well over half full from my vantage point. The highest price tickets were $75. Don't know what the lowest price ones were. The $75 tix also got you into a Meet & Greet with all the acts at a restaurant after the show. The DJO staff were all in tuxes. The live broadcast from there sounded great. They've done a superb job of at least equaling and often exceeding the excitement & fun of 1960's WSAI. I wish I could hear them better 80 miles W of Cincy...thankfully, they stream.
 
Knowing the Taft.. Probably (if the crowd estimate was right) about 3/4's full... I have seen alot of local drama/amateur musicals in that place.. I bet it was the aura of the old 60's touring Rock'N'Roll shows...

Sounds like a genuine success from those comments. They were broadcasting the actual CONCERT live? Seems most acts would not allow that?
 
No live broadcast of the concert...the remote ended at 7PM concurrent with the start of the concert.
 
Every time I post here, and try to say something good about WDJO – I seem to attract the “ire” of some 20-year-old with a deficient SAT score... But here goes (again): CONGRATS WDJO on your successful concert. Radio SHOULD be a medium that hopefully serves every group of people – some will “score” – others will “settle”, but ALL will be served. OK... Oldies are now banished to the AM band on a station that can’t cover its market after sunset, and scores a whopping one-share, but PLEASE allow us that small pleasure – and don’t cut down the talents and intentions of those who try so hard to serve the loyal. Would you rather that brokered vitamin pill infomercials replace The Beatles?

Certainly after this week of news, any “broadcast professional” needs to look at this industry with some open-minded reflection. Over at 1160, here’s what I see (and hear) – a group of very decent folks who love “their” music and listeners who do also. They are neighbors – and good friends – and wouldn’t dream of failing to do their best!

THANKS WDJO for your dedication to “broadcasting” and great music – THANKS for your service – and THANKS for paying your power bill :)
 
Here-Here! Well said, Hippo... I would gladly work for a group like this, over taking an iffy-ratings only based job on an FM in a market of same or larger size... They live radio and have that old fashioned "Good Guy (and Gal)" mentality.... It inspires me to find some under scoring AM's in regional and medium markets and try this with guys who still would like to do a few hours of live radio before or after their regular shirt and tie or blue collar jobs... I see a few 5kw's sitting and doing nothing, that I'd love to program like this... 8)

Hipporadio and skippertthomas, I disagree. SOME of the folks at WDJO are the most arrogant, sleaziest people you'll find in the radio business these days. Their actions in the past are truly EVIL.
 
Ok.. I respect your view... I never had any runins as a smaller market guy yaking with Dusty or any of the former 103.5 guys.... I probably came off as a jerk to some people in my career.. Though I never intended to be.. Thank goodness I am not Imus, today.... Yesh??? Anyone for "Skyline"??? I'm hungry! ;D
 
I’ve never shook your hand and don’t know you Keemo – nor do I know ANYONE at WDJO – but I have to make a judgment based on the net-delivered sounds of WDJO – and some over-the-air on my own radio. I grew up near Cincy in the era of 1360-WSAI, and later WKRQ on FM – I found that to be compelling radio (I also liked WOXR in Oxford a lot too). I live in Charleston, SC – and frankly – FM in both cities - STINKS!... WDJO is a “respite” of sorts – WELL PRESENTED (but somewhat above my age target), and chock-full of “Good Guys” and great music. WDJO is transmitted well, and appears to be in the interest of the listener – if you could only hear the equivalent in ChasTown – you’d understand fully!

There’s much about WDJO I DON’T LIKE – my age dictates that it may well be a decade-older than I may care for (I’m more 70s), but I CAN’T dismiss their on-air presentation and enthusiasm... Dusty and his gang DO a great job! Furthermore, consider the current “AM plight” – and WDJO is a gem! I congratulate WDJO for good programming – I also congratulate so for doing it on the AM band... God, that station can sound good on a decent AM receiver – the former WSAI (1530) and WLW certainly DOESN’T in the IBOC era!

You call them (WDJO) “evil” – well I guess I’m uninformed... I just don’t see (or hear) that from their air... ‘Guess it goes to an old golf axiom: "You can fail to par the forth, but you need to play it as part of your 18”... So WHAT is so “evil” about the crew at WDJO? ‘Could you please tell me – so I can “play through”... THANKS!

I was just glad to hear they had good "ramp access" for those that needed the assistance. I hear the audience appreciated it too!

Punchbuggy, I'll more than happy to elaborate. First of all, Hipporadio and skippertthomas, there's no denying the sound of WDJO. The station is run by professionals that have a passion for the format. It is truly a shame that the oldies are no longer heard on FM. However, you need to know there is a dark underbelly to SOME of the self proclaimed
"Good Guys." Without prying open a Pandora's Box, suffice it to say the road to WDJO is paved with acts of thievery and computer hacking (just to mention a couple of indiscretions).
