Oldies 92.7

"Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" by the Dramatics?
Summer 1971, peak #9 (Billboard).

There are a few songs on the Lumberyard (and its two--count 'em, TWO!) FM signals that do sound a little hinky. There's a Martha & the Vandellas song that sounds awful; I can't remember if it's "Jimmy Mack" or another song. The vocals are really buried. This from a listen on 92.7. Have no idea how 93.3 HD2 sounds. Could one of the ten people in the metro with an HD radio chime in?

Can't speak for the other nine, but at times 92~Seven sounds better to the Nurse and me than 93~Three HD~Too! Those Goldminers sure have some funky processing on those two FM signals, but one fact remains: the signal on 93~Three HD~Too is capable of leaping tall buildings in a single bound, and more powerful than a locomotive. Qualities once reserved only for Xena, the Warrior Princess, and the Old Gringo!

Betcha there's a channel missing when they dubbed it. That song gets awfully weird when you only listen to the left channel. Used to drive me crazy when it would come on through the overhead paging system (wired to left channel of the air monitor) of a station I worked at.

I cannot receive a signal from 92.7 anywhere around my home in S. Tempe but 93.3 HD2 comes in loud and clear at home and all over the metro area in my car.

Regarding the bad song previously, I have noticed throughout the years that "Under The Boardwalk" by the Drifters is a terrible recording. It sounds pretty much the same no matter which station is broadcasting it and even downloaded versions are no better. The same thing happens on several recordings by Enya on her album "Paint The Stars". I've listened to the same songs on old and new DVD's/CD's and they all sound the same so the problem must be with the master recording.

Yup...Under the Boardwalk is pretty distorted, regardless of the platform that plays it. Back in the day, a lot of singles were specifically produced for Ancient Modulation stations, so excessive compression and distortion were quite common. The one that really grates my fez is "Go Now" by the Moody Blues. Legend has it that was a garage session demo that was rushed into production. Must have been a garage full of Gremlins, FIATS, and Hillmans!

What's worse is when you try to clean up those recordings. Remember GoldDisc3 with "NoNoise"?

Sure, TM would sell you the only recording where Bad Moon Rising doesn't have a ton of hiss, but by the time they were done John Fogerty didn't sound like John Fogerty.

We all grew up hearing those flaws in the recordings, and when you take the distortion, rumble, and hiss away our response isn't "that's better" it's "what's wrong?"

I think there was a Humber over in the corner there...

Which begs the question: if you're not hurt by what you don't play, then why does Lumberyard 14~Forty, 92~Seven and 93~Three HD~Too play "Go Now" by the Moody Blues? "Under The Boardwalk" is a signature song for The Drifters, but you can't say the same for "Go Now". Inquiring fezes want to know.

Sure it was. The rock-and-roll people see the "Go Now" Moody Blues as a separate, and superior, entity from the "Knights In White Satin" Moody Blues. They just forgot to change their name when they bought the Mellotron.

Well ride my see-saw, a Knight in white satin sounds kinky... but something Nurse Jeff definitely finds appealing! That Mellotron sure helped the Blues sell a lot more albums than the pre-Mellotron "Go Now". Wonder what miracles the Mellotron could have worked on Bang 545? ...breathe deep the gathering gloom of making love behind the stadium... YIKES!

Let me ride my see-saw first.

Was out tooling around in the Genny today and noticed that 93.3 HD-2 is apparently off the air. Switched to 92.7 and it is coming in like the dogs at dinnertime. In months prior I wasn't able to receive it at all in S. Tempe. Something has changed.....big time.

What's a Genny?

It would appear that you are receiving the 250 watt construction permit https://www.bing.com/maps/?mapurl=h...AZ&fileno=BPFT-20150618AAU&.kml&ignoreoptin=1 rather than the licenced ten watts, which for some reason, I cannot post. I tried it three times and it just puts up the one for the CP.

Since I can't tell any significant difference between the HD signal on 93.3 and the stereo signal on 92.7 I hope they keep one of these on the air. Both used to simulcast KAZG (1440 AM) but I was not able to listen to the AM unless in the far east valley.

I saw the CP in Radio-Locator but the date given was one year ago. Just one month ago I tried 92.7 and could not receive it at the house which is only 8 miles line of sight from South mountain.

If the construction permit was issued nearly a year ago, it is quite possible that that is what you're hearing. I've seen CPs built out within a matter of days before. I didn't notice if it was from the same location or not but if it is, a change at that low a level is just not that big a deal. On the other hand, the new facility is directional so who knows? Nevertheless, the difference between ten and 250 watts should be apparent almost everywhere.

Seems to me the 92.7 and 93.3HD2 feeds are separate. They are using the much greater coverage area and larger contour of the HD2 instead of the AM signal for the translator construction permit so the HD2 cannot go away, even if they are fed separately.
