Oldies 950 with a live Jock right now...

Great to know that Steve is back on the air. His background is both impressive and extensive and I won't try to recall it from memory, but it he is a true professional.

Welcome back, Steve.

Steve is a vet of WIBG and WFIL...maybe a few others I remember hearing Steve at 'FIL doing overnights back in, ah, 1934 was it??? He may have been part-time. I think he was recently doing something at WPEN before the oldies change. By the way, how is my former station sounding? I'm hanging out on the beach in Florida these days and haven't heard the format. I was part of the "Reunion" of the old "950 WPEN" standards gang months ago on Nettleton's show, but could only hear the station over a terrible phone interface. What I did hear was Diamond Jim sounding just as damn good as ever!

By the way, How the hell are you General Lee????!!!!!

I was surprised not only to hear a live jock at night on WPEN but in the 9:00pm infomercial hour, too! Is this going to be a regular thing, or haphazard with infomercials mixed in?

I believe Steve Ross was morning man for WXTU in the brief 92X urban format 1983-1984 before they went country, when he left.

Truth be told, Charlie, it's not doing well. The station's playlist isn't bad, nor are the jocks (when they're on), but the station has several problems that keep it from succeeding.

1) Infomercials on the weekend (and sometimes weeknights).
2) Diminished sound quality (thanks to IBOC and poor processing).
3) No promotion or street presence at all.

I wanted so badly for PEN to succeed when they flipped to oldies, but I'm afraid I and many other Philly oldies lovers have been let down.

Chaos

No reflection on the new guy, whom I have not heard, but they had a great evening jock in place, Dale Shaw, who was starting to get good numbers and build buzz. They dumped him to save a few bucks by not paying him and instead running brokered programming (the Geator and Informercials). That strategy bit them in the butt, so now they swing back the other way. I hope the new guy didn't quit his day job, sell his house or make any other long-term plans.

Hey Charlie,

Doing well, thank you. Nice to see your post and please say hello to the lovely Mrs. Mills for me. :)
