Oldies 96.5: KIKO-FM Claypool AZ

Most direct way to Lost Wages, but would the Gremlin make it that high in elevation at this time of year?

Remember those signs when headed east from the Old Gringo's place...

No problem. Nurse Jeff and I douse our fezes with cold water and stay as cool as a Gremlin looks!

Just can't wait to hear 96~Five wherever we go in the Valley. Bet the new owner aint gonna play oldies.

We could camp out at the KIKO studios in Miami and register the Gremlin as a Gila County classic. No need to drive to Kingman. 🤔 Come to think of it...is there ever any need to drive to Kingman?
There surely is more need to drive to Kingman than to Gila Bend. The only interest in Gila Bend was years ago when Dewey Hopper seemed to be obsessed with the high temperatures there... and Shirley agrees!

Gotta try the Space Age Restaurant in G.B. You just might see Lt. Detective Frank Drebbin of Police Squad pull up for a cup of Joe. The restaurant's neon signs look great at night. Come to think of it, everything looks better at night in Gila Bend. 🛸

Anyone know what is going on with the other Low stations? I live in Cave Creek so can't readily pick up those east valley station, curious if 1340 and 1260 are still on the air? Streaming seems not to be working for the Rattler and the Bull.

The translators (97.3 and 99.1) are still on the air, simulcasting the AMs in AM-style mono. AFAIK, the AMs are still on the air. KBSZ is technically not a John Low station anymore, but both stations are managed by Len Novin.

As of 3 PM this afternoon, 1260 is completely off the air, while 1340 is on and off, running maybe 50 watts at most when it is on. It fades in and out as I drive through NE Mesa. Both FM translators are on and operating. Must be some serious AM transmitter issues.

How the heck did that happen? Monsoon storm? And why would 1340 remain on the air while 1260 is off? Sounds like both transmitters were damaged. But if 1260 is off, wouldn't 97.3 have been forced to sign off as well?
They have a fiberglass antenna, not steel. Fiberglass is not as strong as steel, but the fiberglass was hard, not flexible . And it had no guy wires, so maybe it doesn't take much to bring it down

Yes. I think the manufacturer is Valcom.
Correct. It was a cost-efficient way to move KBSZ from Wickenburg to Apache Junction back in 2010 (and without all the NIMBY stuff too). They happened to manage to diplex KIKO on there as well.

Is this the "super hot" part of AZ?. Could that effect the fiberglass? A friend of the family has a Corvette with the fiberglass body. He was concerned about the cold.

Some years ago, a consultant told me that the fiberglass antennas were susceptible to lightning damage. Supposedly there is a loading coil that goes poof and bricks it.

KOOL FM HD 3 is on the air.

Yes, it is. Sadly, out of the four stations playing oldies in Phoenix (plus Tucson's KDRI-AM which I can receive during daylight hours), KIKO-FM's programming is my least favorite. It tries to play a mix of music from the 60s through the 80s with emphasis on the 80s but the results sound much too hard-edged (and much too in competition with KOOL-FM's main channel) for my taste. Right now, I think the best sounding oldies stations in the Phoenix market are KOAI-FM plus its 94.9 translator followed by KAZG. KXEG places third with KIKO-FM (and KOOL-HD3 simulcast) coming a definite dead last--even the harder to hear KDRI-AM is better.

Take a look at the arrangement for KPLP 104.5 in White Salmon WA for something similar. A separate Portland translator K283BL on 104.5 is fed by KKWA HDx, which is chained into KPLP audio. The net result is that 104.5 gives you the same programming from The Dalles to Metro Portland.
