In exchange for HD2 space on big signals in certain markets, EMF is allowing Clear Channel to program a few of their FM translators.
In Minneapolis, CC was able to move its sports-talker to FM via a HD2/FMX translator that EMF leased out. The same happened over the 4th of July weekend here in Austin; 103.1 moved up from San Marcos, where it was simulcasting the Air1 Christian alternative format. It's now on one of the main West Lake Hills towers, airing "the Zone" sports programming from 1300/KVET and 98.1/KVET-FM HD2.
I don't suspect this is the last we'll be hearing of this—keep an eye out on any EMF translators that happen to be in the commercial spectrum in a Clear Channel market and you'll probably start to see AM simulcasts and new stations like this.
