Oldies acts still touring

I've seen a couple of versions of The Drifters, once on a bill with the Box Tops, who played background. Last I knew Chubby Checker was still touring

Probably later. No tours by the Box Tops listed in 1986. One reunion show in 1989 with Chilton. Then they reunited in 1996 until Chilton's death in 2010. The band is now touring with two original members.
 
With so many people who have been with The Doobie Brothers, have there been any ex-members that tried to put a group together?

The Christian rock band Petra has actually done reunion tours with the early 80's version of the group calling themselves Classic Petra, and also with former members as CPR, with lead singer Greg Volz, keyboardist John Lawry, and drummer Louie Weaver having been involved in both versions.

I was in Quincy, IL from July 1985-April 1986 and that's where I saw them...who knows who owned the name at the time.

Chilton was doing solo work at that time. He actually was out of the music business in the early 80s, but was writing again by 1985.

I hear those commercials from time to time whenever we pass through Jackson. If we lived closer, I could just about guarantee that we would go to some of those shows!

There's a lot of this that goes on with bands from the 50s and 60s.
There's also the hologram show that's being done with Roy Orbison. That one is overseen by his son, who owns the rights.

Wife got to see Elvis (on jumbotron) with the surviving members of his band playing live. This was on either/or the 20th/25th anniversary of his passing, so either 1997 and/or 2002.

They were on an awards show a few years ago. Maybe The Grammys. Or maybe one of the country music shows, since I was a little surprised to think of them as country, but "Black Water" certainly would have fit. They played "Listen to the Music", which I had never thought of as country but it sounds good and sounded good when whoever they were played it.

Huh? They're still together with three of the original members. Lead singer Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons still tours with them. They even did a tribute album a few years ago.

Michael McDonald occasionally shows up, but he's mainly a solo artist these days.

I saw Jeff "Skunk" Baxter at the White House a few months ago when the president signed the Music Modernization Act.

I mainly meant that they had enough members at one time or another that an entire group of former members could play together and there could be multiple groups claiming to be the Doobie Brothers. Petra and The Imperials are the same way in CCM.

Several of them died. The key thing is group names are trademarked, and other members can't tour as the Doobie Brothers unless they differentiate themselves from the original group. AFAIK none of the key members, such as Skunk or McDonald, are touring as the Doobie Brothers.

Cowan is actually 66, which would have made him 18 when they started having hits. He's just a couple years younger than the founders.

Joke? Maybe "key" being slang for "kilo" like "doobie" is slang for "marijuana cigarette"? Was that the joke? Or calling McDonald (more of a solo artist) and Baxter (better known as part of Steely Dan) key members of the Doobie Brothers? Not exactly side-splitting ROTFL material, either one, but I guess I get your "joke."

I guess I'm the only person who ever heard of his solo hit "So Wrong". It was played on a station I happened to be listening to.
