Oldies and Franco...Still Dead

I've been saying for weeks on these boards that Oldies listeners will find another station to listen to. Case in point: the Indianapolis trends released today. Both this board and the Indiana board were lamenting the loss of Gold 104.5 and rubbing their hands in glee about Jack's impending demise. Well, kids....without quoting numbers, let me just point out that while Jack was up slightly over the last trend, the total 12+ numbers slipped from when they were Gold! A knife in the evil Susquehanna's back! HAHAHA! How DARE they take away our oldies station! That'll teach them!

That's right....the numbers dropped a whopping .3!! Back in statistics class, we'd call that statistical error...not even worth noting.

What's more, the country 'Jack' equivalent (Hank) in the same market more than doubled their last book numbers in the recent trend.

Jack, Hank, Bob, Arch....all welcomed with open arms, coast to coast!

Oldies...relegated to a back channel on equipment most people don't even own.

Love oldies....but still gotta be real. Sorry.

Yep....and then, just like oldies now....
THEY PULLED THE PLUG.

And the listener found something else.

Once again, you prove my point. Thanks for the backup, bro.

Hold it - oldies was on WCBS-FM for over 30 years. Its been on WOGL-FM for 18 years, on KLDE for over 10 years, and on WBIG-FM for over 11 years. Oldies is not a format designed to only give you a few good books then fizzle out.

Will Jack be the new oldies? I dont know - it might if it can keep the "oh wow" factor up, but I doubt it will succede like oldies has.

On the subject of Jack: I have listened to a few Jack stations and they vary more than oldies stations from market to market.

Jack 101.1 in New York plays a lot more songs that are disagreeable to me than Bob-FM here in Austin or Mike in Medford, Oregon, while I spent a few days there.

As a person grounded in fifties to seventies music, Bob-FM is mostly agreeable to me and more of what is played on Jack in NYC totally turns me off, especially songs that border on rap.

Oldies vs. Jack

One or two trends does not a station make. Nor a couple of books, for that matter. Jack's success or failure will not be determined this spring, summer or even fall but over the next year or two.

Those who smile with glee when a JACK station isn't burning up the ratings or even falls, it's too early to play the "told ya so" game.

For those who love JACK and get all heated up over one or two "up" books, don't get ahead of yourselves- it is simply too early to draw any conclusions.

(and, BTW: Oldies is not dead)

Isn't Jack another form of "oldies" . I think most people who love radio dislike the concept of the jockless station. I don't see playing a huge variety of hits has to done by a robot. Why can't a jack have jocks. Maybe we need a station called Howard.

Yery perceptive, OldiesGal...and much more progressive than most of the posters on this particular board. Jack IS oldies, for the most part, with a little current AC thrown in occasionally....and is closer to a top 40 oldies station for today than most people would care to admit. 50's oldies is dead, except for a very, very few niche programs. Mainstream oldies now is 60's and 70s, and even those are fading. Classic Rock, and to a lesser degree Jack-type stations are taking the turf from traditional Oldies stations.
And Jack with jocks will probably happen, eventually....but for now, the jockless nature is one of the identifying characteristics....to set it apart from Oldies and Classic Rock.

Well said, Oldiescat....cept for the last part. Oldies may NOT be dead, but it's dying... and even that is subject to conditions. Location, playlist, personalities...all these figure in to whether the Oldies station in YOUR market is still viable...teetering on the edge of oblivion...or already relegated to the dustbin of history.
Of course, these same characteristics--location, playlist, personaliity--how the station is presented-- can and will doom other stations in other formats, as well--including some of the new Jacks and Jack rip-offs especially. Nothing new there.

Yes, just shifted forward 20 years or so. And some Variety Hits stations still play some 50s and 60s tunes in addition to all the newer stuff.

There is one in Sacramento.

Named after Stern, of course, and will likely get Jacked up by Infinity in January, even though Sac already has a Variety Hits rimshot.
