Oldies are on 98.1

New translator from Long Island is playing oldies on 98.1. It only works on the shoreline, it's better than nothing.

I'm hearing it all the way up in Meriden most days. Nice signal for 250 watts. Its playlist is tight, a few hundred familiar, tested hits, not much different from that Hope Valley/Southington/Springfield combo. But as even songs like "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Summer in the City" fade from all other playlists, I suppose fans of my generation's music will be pleased to have a place to hear even those once-overplayed staples.

No dice at a relative's house on the Berlin/Newington town line. My old Panasonic AM/FM/CD "Walkman" just got interference from WUCS-FM 97.9, a.k.a. 97.9-ESPN.

IIRC....WUCS was the call assigned to UCONN-Storrs back in the '70s.....I was working for (then) WNEC-FM in Henniker, NH (New England College) 91.7, 10 watts.....I heard WUCS one morning during an inversion when WNEC was off the air...
Don't have a clue how much power WUCS was running at the time....
Or....was this all just a dream...??!!

I've always wondered why they chose that frequency for ESPN Radio. It's too close, in my opinion, to WCTY-FM 97.7 of Norwich. I don't think it was a problem when it was back in Enfield/Springfield, however.

I'm listening to the Kool Oldies translator station now on 96.1 FM from West Peak in Meriden (but licensed to Southington). There's still a little noise, despite checking it by the Berlin/Newington town line.

The one which really irks me is WERB-FM 94.5, which is the station for Berlin High School. I think their transmitter is only 22 miles away from the transmitter of WYBC-FM 94.3, licensed to New Haven but has its transmitter near the tunnel on CT Route 15.

Irk you it may but 94.5 was recommended by the FCC when WERB was forced to change due to a new Class A FM (Litchfield, CT) coming on air on 97.3 their former frequency. I was the engineer responsible for the required equipment changes. I did not, however, prepare the application for new frequency. WYBC vacated their former transmitter site atop the Payne-Whitney gymnasium and relocated to the present tower. WERB's antenna is located on the roof of Berlin High School to the last of my knowledge. It is a Class D NCE station.

I hear what you're saying...but 22 miles apart is awfully close!

As for WERB-FM, I sometimes wonder who's signal is worse: Their's or WFCS-FM 107.7 from CCSU in New Britain? Despite living in the south end of New Britain, I struggle to pick up a decent signal of either one!

I work in New Britain and I can tell you that downtown, WERB is the better signal. Strange. I sometimes listen to the classic country show in the afternoon. Not sure why a high school station is playing Patsy Cline and Hank Williams, but it is.
