Oldies Back on FM in Portland!

Now i can turn off the computer and leave the bedroom radio on 106.7 all night.
I used $47 in electricity leaving the computer on my Live 365 station!

not so fast

Their playlist looks closer to Classic Hits than Oldies- any word on their presentation?

I do find it odd to have ultra-oldies songs like I Fought The Law, the DC5 and Chapel Of Love on the same station with Huey Lewis and Running On Empty.

Re: not so fast

I thought maybe they'd be streaming, but their website's just a placeholder:

http://www.literock1067.com/

Good thing, though, is that Dennis Constantine is programming. I have the utmost respect for Dennis, due to both his legendary track record at KBCO, and also having been a client when he was consulting. This can only be good news!

I have listened to this station for the better part of 2 days and can say with absolute certainty that what I've heard is predominately 1964-75 with very little else and hearing the 80s is rare! Everything I have heard, with the exception of certain Beatles tunes, has been a hit, whether Rock leaning, Motown or ballad.

This station's playlist seems similar to KFRC/San Francisco, which is having early success with their updated oldies format.

their sound?

what is their presentation? Does it sound like 70s Top 40 or more like an AC?
Or Classic Rock/Hits delivery package?

That sounds like what WBOQ in Gloucester, Mass., is doing. Early '60s Four Seasons into Three Degrees into Roy Orbison into Hall and Oates. Their presentation is definitely AC, and they steer clear of anything too "hard." Unfortunately, they don't stream audio.

The original description -- the one with Dave Clark Five and Huey Lewis -- sounds more like WDRC-FM in Hartford, but DRC will play stuff like "Takin' Care of Business" and "Tumbling Dice" that BOQ won't touch. The presentation depends on who's on the air; nights are high energy, days much less so. Another non-streaming station; in fact, one of the first to drop streaming after the AFTRA/SAG money grab of 2001.

sound?

so you're in Portland where you can listen to them?

No. Maybe I should have said "that LOOKS like" rather than "that sounds like." I was just trying to say that, from the description given, this station seemed to be playing the same sort of music mix that WBOQ is, nothing more. Obviously, I've never heard the Oregon station here in New England; I never intended to imply that I had.

sound?

It would be great to get an Oregonian to post here and give us their perspective of the station's actual "sound" and style presentation.

Well, there's a small thread about this station on the Oregon board, but so far the discussion centers around whether it's classic hits or oldies, not the presentation. From the artist list given there (Len Barry, Tommy James & Shondells, Bob Dylan, Steve Miller Band, Cornelius Bros. & Sister Rose, to name five), it would appear to be a hybrid on the order of the Hartford station I mentioned in the previous post. Maybe the Oregonians will turn their attention to the station's presentation as the thread matures.

Nothing hybrid at all about that list: that's as mainstream oldies as it gets (provided they aren't jumping off the deep end and playing obscures from Len Barry and Tommy James).

All post-1965 as well.

sound?

Probably right- but the presenation could provide some perspective on where they're headed with it. If they have a 1970s-type KJR presentation, that's one thing. If their jox are not talking over music, they have no jingles, etc., then that means they intend to be more of a Classic Hits station that plays a few key 60s oldies.

To me, Dave Clark 5, Hermits and Hang On Sloopy (SOUND-wise) smack too early 60's (even though they were mid 60's songs- there's no future for Oldies in Gary Lewis and the Playboys and Archies hits).

Re: sound?

I live in the Portland area. I can't really say anything about presentation because the station is still totally automated but the station seems to me like what we now consider mainstream Oldies. Try this link and click on "feedback yak": http://www.pdxradio.com

sound?

Jingles? Sweepers? Upbeat, mid-tempo feel to the imaging? Any tv/movie drop-ins? Is the tone of the presentation laid-back or more typical oldies hype?

C'mon, guys- this just ain't that complicated.

All we have so far is a laid back guy who comes on every few minutes and makes an obscure comment about just about anything and the line "K-Hits 106.7 Super 60s & 70s". There are no jingles or anything else to give a clue as to what the station will eventually sound like. They do however make a plea for listeners of the former FM Oldies station, making no mention of the fact that it has moved to AM. All we can do is wait and see.

Re: sound?

OK, at least that give us somewhat of an idea. If they don't have jingles, I'm betting the feel of the station will be less oldies and more like Classic Hits.

...or they just haven't bought any yet. I could give several examples of songs not heard on Classic Hits stations as far as I know: "Chapel of Love" comes to mind. "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat?" is another. The article didn't say the station WAS Classic Hits, only that they were marketing it as such, presumably to advertisers or their agencies but not necessarily the general public.
