OLDIES/CH @ 101.1 WCBS-FM RETURNS THURSDAY!

According to All Access, WCBS-FM in NYC is getting ready to start back playing Oldies/Classic Hits on Thursday at 1:01PM.

More from Radio and Records:

"The re-launched format will feature songs from the Beatles, Motown and the Beach Boys, and continuing through the late `80s, with songs from artists such as Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Valli, and John Mellencamp, among many others.

As for the air staff, Dan Taylor has been named as the station’s new morning show host (6:00-10:00 a.m.), along with contributors Mr. G (weather) and Al Meredith (news headlines). Bob Shannon also marks his return to the station as host of middays (10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.), and is joined on-air by market vet Broadway Bill Lee who will host afternoon drive (3:00-7:00 p.m.).

“Above all else, it is an honor to bring CBS-FM back to New York,” said WCBS-FM VP/GM Jennifer Donohue. “Having been a long time employee and personal fan of the station I truly understand what an emotional moment it was when New Yorkers had to say goodbye to their favorite radio station. We acknowledge and appreciate the loyal fan base who’ve never stopped asking for the format’s return, and now we’re thrilled to be back -- better than before -- with updated features, incredible on-air production, the best combination of legendary New York personalities, and of course hundreds of ‘The Greatest Hits Of All Time.’”

Donohue added, “We firmly believe that as the radio industry moves towards electronic audience measurement, the popularity of the classic hits format will experience a resurgence -- not unlike what we’re seeing at our radio station in Philadelphia, WOGL-FM. There’s no denying the mass appeal a station like CBS-FM can have in the market, and hundreds of thousands of listeners won’t be the only ones who benefit from the intimate connection they’ll form with the station. Between the over-the-air product, our online offerings, as well as digital and mobile applications, advertisers will have more choices than ever before to reach this enormous pool of potential customers.”

“CBS-FM will be a station that celebrates its past with an updated sound appealing to a whole new generation of listeners on many levels,” said PD Brian Thomas, who also served as Jack FM PD. “The role we play in the community and the responsibility we have to our listeners will be treated with respect as we reintroduce the station back into the fabric of the city.”

YYYYYYESSSSS!!!!!!!!

YYYYYYESSSSS!!!!!!!!! YYYYYESSSSSSS!!!

The oldies are BACK....THANK 'YA LORD!!!

THANK 'YA EYE NETWORK!!!

Listened to the station online today:

It will never satisfy those who think "oldies" should only be about Elvis, Buddy Holly, Connie Francis and
Bobby Darin.

But for people like me (I'm 50), it sounds like a pretty well done, uptempo, personality presentation. I think people (especially the naysayers who are flooding the New York board today) are in for a surprise when the ratings come in.

And, yes...it sounds like an oldies station to me. They just don't call it that anymore.

Generally, you hear about 6-7 songs from the 60's, 5-6 from the 70's, and about 2 from the 80's. And, every second or third hour, you get a 50's hit.

No, but "oldies" stations shouldn't exclude such great artists either.

Its certainly not as good as they were before the change to Jack FM (Golden Oldies)

Actually, it is better. Great imaging, good formatics, nice talent, broader music range and on target for 35-54.

Note that the station is not calling itself "oldies" because it is what "inside the business" is called classic hits, not oldies.

The whole idea is to be a yonger demo staiton, and stay far away from that stuff that appeals to people over 60....

According to you david, oldies are classified as anything played before 1970.Last time I checked wcbs fm is playing 1960's.Please clarify.

Inside the industry, a station that is mostly 70's is classic hits and if it is mostly 60's it is oldies. Theu overllap, like most formats. The key is that oldies is a mostly 55+ format, while classic hits appeals mostly to 35-54.

Exactly. And if they don't want to include '50s music in "prime time", then evenings or weekends would be the answer.

Correctomundo, Fonz...sure wouldn't hurt to occasionally put on some great old artists on in the evening , overnite or weekend rotation...I have never had anyone flame me for playing stuff like that or calling up complaining... :)

Yeah, we will now hear from David Eduardo as usual, spouting off about "the safe " or "tested" 300 oldies that get beaten to death ??

He's eating enough crow these days since he said CBS-FM would never come back, get over it and- voila- it did come back, slightly tweaked.....

light the torch, i've got my flameproof on :D

That's rip-roaring funny, since the 12 major market classic hits stations I work with have playlists of over 1000 songs.

No, it came back as a brand new format, one the industry calls classic hits. It has significantly different talents than the oldies station did, and very different imaging. It is not the same station other than dial position and call letters.

That's good. At least some broadcasters/ programmers haven't lost their heads.

How many major market standards FMs are there?

I don't think that fans of '50s music care if they hear it on AM or FM. Most of that stuff was recorded in mono anyway.

That's like saying that you could have a Mercedes, but prefer to stick with the Chevy because that is what you had before.

But, granting that you may have elements of an argument, how many successful standards stations are there in the top 50 or top 100 markets?
